Coker: Cung Le Will Fight 2 Times in 2009 Plus MW Matchups
MMAWeekly reports:
An elbow injury is currently keeping Le from training, but according to Coker, his schedule is open. Once healed, he should re-emerge in his adopted sport.
"Otherwise, he would be fighting on this show (in April)," said Coker of Strikeforce's Showtime event on the 11th. "But you will see Cung Le back in the cage in Strikeforce at least two times before the end of the year."
Coker also says a rematch with Frank Shamrock, from whom Le took the Strikeforce middleweight title in a fight that broke Shamrock's arm, is inevitable.
"I haven't sat down and talked to Frank about it, but the fight between Frank and Cung, number 2, is a fight that should actually happen before the end of 09," confirmed Coker.
Scott Coker and Monte Cox have also talked about a Lawler vs Cung Le unification bout this year. Monte Cox said that they have no desire to fight Joey Villasenor again, and if Lawler can't fight Le soon, they would love to fight Misaki or Manhoef next.
Is it me, or does the prospect of Lawler versus either Le, Manhoef, Cyborg, Trigg, Santiago, Shamrock, or Misaki ALL sound incredibly good? That's not including Joey Villasenor, Terry Martin, and Scott Smith in the picture. The Strikeforce Middle Weight contender picture looks VERY promising and should be a main focus in their future events, along with their Light Weight class.
As for 2009, a Cung Le rematch with Frank Shamrock and a title unification bout with Robbie Lawler should produce good gate and rating numbers for Strikeforce. Either way, this should be a win win situation for the fans since all their bouts will be showed in either Showtime or CBS.

Mousasi is with Affliction an DREAM, so that probably wont happen.
I like Lawler vs Misaki. That should be an incredible fight, along with Shamrock and Le.

Man, Lawler is good, but I think he may be one of the most over rated fighters out there. I think he would get smoked by several of the top UFC MWs. That said, at least now there are some more intriguing matches available for us to see.
I would rather see Manhoef vs Chung Lee myself.
If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.
And before anyone goes bananas, that was intentional, lol.

Is that a jab at mmalogics Cung Lee remark?
:)

You can say all you want about how overrated a fighter is, but you can’t question how exciting a fighter is and their killer instincts to finish a fight, and this Robbie Lawler has plenty of!

I think he’s earned his ranking, but I also think he’ll find his way tumbling from it should he start fighting tougher competition than he has thus far.

To the winner: congratulations, I’ve still got Anderson Silva, Marquardt, Maia and GSP (when he gets there after being Alves) over you.

That is as relevant as me saying that Jacare would sub all of them in a grappling competition, although Maia would give him a decent match up.

Maia and Jacare have beaten each other in submission grappling. Though I think the edge goes slightly to Jacare.
A man should never waste an opportunity to keep his mouth shut.
I think Jacare would sub him again, so I agree with you.

Saying that the winner would still be ranked no higher than 5th in the world is relevant. How they would do in a grappling competition isn’t.

Its not relevant to Strikeforce, and rankings can vary greatly. What about Mousasi, etc.

What about him? He’s not a middleweight anymore.
by Derek Suboticki on Feb 11, 2009 8:15 PM EST up reply actions
Technically, he still is until his first fight as a LHW.
by MMASuPreMaCy on Feb 11, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions
Great. Point for you. He’ll never fight at middleweight again.

Are you counting Maia and Nate as top 5 MW in the world or UFC?
Makes a difference, doesn’t it?

Nope, because other than #5, those are the same thing.
