Quote of the Day: Matt Hughes

I usually don’t do this, but I will this time. When I talk about a topic one week, it usually doesn’t get brought up again. I think a lot of people need to go back and reread last week’s blog, including GSP. At no point did I accuse Georges of putting grease on himself. All I said was that he felt slick. I’ve wrestled over a thousand matches, fought 50 opponents, all I’ve ever done in life is wrestle and compete with other people. With all that experience, do you think I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between sweat and something else?-- Matt Hughes keeping Grease-Gate alive.
Last week when I got to Florida, I was in the elevator with Robbie, I said "Robbie did you hear about GSP?" He said, "No, I don’t know what you’re talking about." I then said that BJ accused him of being slippery, Robbie looked right up at me and said, "That’s what you said after Anaheim." Also, I’ve had several people close to me around my town who have come up to me and said the same thing.
I’ve nothing against GSP, I even think he’s somewhat a likable guy. Some people are trying to say that I’m making this personal and that’s just not true at all. The reason I didn’t bring this up before was because I didn’t know there was anything to him being slick. With all the other guys coming out and saying the same thing, I just wanted to be true to myself, and to everybody else, and say that there could be some validity there.

Ha.
I will play my game beneath the spin light.

I’m sure GSP is stoked that a guy like Hughes deems him somewhat likeable.
What a dick.

Yeah, but rarely do you get kicked in the head
and sent to your corner after the first round half retarded and nearly out on your feet.
Yeah, He was definitely NOT slippery in the fight Hughes won. Just the last 2 fights says his blog. And when Matt is thirsty, he denies all claims of being thirsty, just states that he just needed something to drink.
When you complain and say things YEARS after the fact……How much validity can there be? All these fighters saying this just HAPPEN to have one thing in common…..They ALL got humiliated and OUTCLASSED by GSP like they have NEVER been in their fighting career. And this is a way to unite with others that got manhandled and thrown around like an amateur. The UFC has(and therefore the athletic commission will have access to) probably what 10-12 fights with GSP….I am sure footage will be made availabe is any validity whatsover

I don’t think these guys are implying that his corner was greasing him up during the fights every time. There are ways to prepare before a fight that would make you more slippery than normal when you sweat. Just off the top of my head I would assume that you could massage types of oil until the skin absorbed all it could take. Then when the fight started the fighter would sweat out the oil and sweat mixture.

Someone plucked off his delete key
He goes on about how he definitively knows the difference between being slick and sweaty, but then claims he needed the recent accusations to justify that “there was anything to him being slick”.

Hughes is making a mockery of himself again. His 2nd fight with GSP had precious few seconds of grappling to begin with. Was it GSP’s shin that felt slick, or was it his elbows on Hughes face that felt slick?
LMFAO at Hughes calling GSP “somewhat likeable”.

Hughes didnt say he lost because GSP was slick… He said he felt slick.
by mmalogic on Feb 10, 2009 5:03 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t say he said that, I pointed out the main details of the fight, in which there were severely limited grappling or any opportunities for Matt to make such an observation. There’s a difference.

If someone asked Matt Hughes if Georges St Pierre was involved in 9/11, he’d probably say ’I’ve heard that from several people.’

Hughes/GSP II was in Sacramento.

Also, why would people close to Hughes in his own town say GSP felt slippery?

Blockout612 good eye! I was coming in here to point that out.
Anyways Matt Hughes has only been embarassed twice in his illustrious career. Both times by George.
Sherk was embarassed.
BJ has never been that embarassed…
I find it hysterical that all these sore losers pipe up trying to justify their loses.
Hughes is over the hill, Sherk is a steroid junkie and BJ well he simply lives up to the name Baby Jay…
The best part about all of this is that George would fight all of them again, 2 months apart just to shut them all up. He’s a real champion and doesn’t deserve all the bullshit being spouted about him being a cheater.

Perhaps GSPs training has evolved so much that genetically he’s changed. Now instead of sweat he excretes baby oil or perhaps more appropriate.. rendered whale blubber (he is Canadian after all).

How much stock can you put into something that happened over a year ago – in Hughes case – but nothing was said until now? I’ve got to see definitive proof that GSP and his people have done more than what happened with Nurse during the Penn fight. Even though Hughes isn’t saying that he lost because of GSP being “slick,” these accusations do cast a shadow over those wins and call GSP’s honor into question. This thing won’t die, and I’m not sure about what can be done in the way of an investigation or the like to set things straight. The entire ordeal is unfortunate.

Indeed
The only GIF’s people are busting out are of BJ/GSP. I’ve seen GSP get “the rub” from his corner many times. Where’s the evidence of previous greasing? Did they abandon some previous effective way of greasing for this obvious one? Just doesn’t add up. Maybe they’re left with the impression that GSP is “slippery” because he’s that good on the ground? How can anyone say they definitively remember someone felt a certain way from a fight, where you’re getting punched and kicked, a year or two ago. You may have impressions, but to say you can definitively remember seems unlikely.

When Matt said “but what I am saying is, for my last two fights against Georges, he felt greasy” in his first blog, I disregarded anything he said.
He felt greasy when he beat you but in the first fight where you won, he didn’t? That seems a little questionable to me. If he had said he felt greasy in all three fights, it would have given him a little more credibility. As it is, it looks like he is making excuses as to why he lost.

When did GSP start training with Greg Jackson?

GSP joined Jackson’s team after his UFC 69 loss to Serra. UFC 74 was the first fight for GSP with his current training/trainer setup – Jackson, Zahabi, Chaimberg, Grant, etc. Jackson was in GSP’s corner for the UFC 69 fight, but he wasn’t the main corner man, as GSP still was under Vargotsky at that time.

Matt Hughes is a pompous jack ass… but that’s what gives him his charm.
It doesn’t bode well for GSP now that Mayhem Miller, Matt Hughes, BJ Penn are stating these things.
Even the Cesar Gracie Camp has come out and accused the entire jackson team for doing this.
In the second Matt Hughes fight you can see phil nurse pouring water on GSP’s legs.
I think GSP would still win his fights even if he didnt play these games – I dont know why his handlers kept pushing the envelope…
by mmalogic on Feb 10, 2009 5:11 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Pouring water on a fighter’s legs is not illegal.
None of the lame accusations affects GSP in any way
by Hardcharger on Feb 10, 2009 5:36 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Look I like GSP and I think he and Anderson are top 2 pound for pound…
You’re right water isnt illegal…
But that shows to what extent the camp is strategically thinking about.
Watering the legs makes your opponents shot less effective… water hitting the skin also takes out any “baby oil” that was stored in the pores.
by mmalogic on Feb 10, 2009 6:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
at the end of the day when 4 guys are accusing you of something, and when a big name camp comes out and accuses your whole camp its kind of weird…
by mmalogic on Feb 10, 2009 6:32 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Pouring water on the legs shows nothing, other than his corner getting GSP ready for the next round. Fighters pour water on their heads and bodies all the time between rounds. Nurse pouring it on GSP’s legs is a Muay Thai thing. There’s nothing interesting about it.
by Hardcharger on Feb 11, 2009 9:32 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
So let me get this straight. People grease so guys can’t grapple you and makes grappling and jits more difficult in general. So why would GSP grease against Miller and proceed to work hard at a couple armbar attempts and a kimura? Could someone provide some insight?
Wouldn’t the point of greasing be to avoid the grappling and keep it standing?
by LiuLang on Feb 10, 2009 6:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
if GSP’s arm, back , neck or legs are slick it will be hard to control him…
That doesnt effect GSP from getting control of his opponent.
by mmalogic on Feb 10, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
LOL at your arguments. Yes, GSP has magic grease that allows him to control people but makes him slick to everyone else.

Lol. That’s really charming characteristics.

it kind of seems that in trying to state that he didn’t say GSP greased himself, that he’s saying that in a round-a-bout fashion. by justifying himself like that, it seems a bit more like he’s trying to give it to the man, GSP in this case, and make himself feel better.

I am done with this story
as it is likely we will never have anything more than fighters who have all lost to GSP telling this. It is just sad that this is out there & I for one just hope that we will not hear an GSP opponent in the future making this accusation.

Thank you Matt Hughes. Don’t back off of what you said. People will be critical when they don’t want to believe and that is fine. If there is an investigation, then the facts need to get brought to the table. If other fighters have experienced this same problem then they have every right to come forward with the facts. BJ and Matt Serras camps both had spoken about it prior to the fight and BJ’s camp specifically told the commission to keep an eye out for it prior to the fight. There is validity to this matter. Whether GSP knew about it or now remains unknown. I don’t know how he couldn’t have if there were so many fights in which this happened, but I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. Fighters need to be whiped down in between rounds regularly now. Being as Danzig spilled the beans on fighters finding ways to literally sweat the grease out during the fight.
by RyanHobbs on Feb 10, 2009 5:13 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
but which character in the bible does hughes represent?
i’m soooo tired of this story. so those out there that doubt every person coming forward, i guess my question is: could you be convinced he was greasing other than actually catching him red-handed? is there someone whose word you would take? personally for me it was Mayhem.
by Headkick on Feb 10, 2009 5:16 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
That was my thought as well.
All of these accusations together seem like too much to just ignore or dismiss, but what recourse is there to proving them?
by dnevil001 on Feb 10, 2009 5:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Funny thing is, there are still people denying that it happened in the Penn fight, or they are using the excuse that it wasn’t really alot, or it didn’t make any difference. The Penn team warned the commission ahead of time, GSP’s corner gets busted and they deniers get mad at BJ.

not to compare greasing to steroids but this reminds me of the baseball situation of the past few years…Hughes comes off alot like Jose Canseco, basically an idiot who has no credibility, yet becomes the most credible person in reguards to baseball’s steroid problem. I actually believe what Hughes is saying for once, maybe just because it was obvious GSP greased…
but to me Hughes = Canseco….GSP = All the baseball players who denied cheating then were found to have indeed cheated…
