Frank Shamrock vs. Nick Diaz CONFIRMED for Strikeforce on 4/11

Two of MMA's most brash and controversials personalities will collide when Nick Diaz and Frank Shamrock face off in the main event of Strikeforce's upcoming event on April 11th at the HP Pavillion in San Jose, scheduled to be broadcast on Showtime as part of Strikeforce's new deal with the network and Pro Elite.  There were rumors of this fight floating around in the days since the Strikeforce announcement, but Sam Caplan at Five Ounces of Pain confirmed early this morning that the fight is on.  An official announcement from Strikeforce is likely on Tuesday.

The matchup had been rumored for the past several days but FiveOuncesOfPain.com was able to confirm early Wednesday morning that the fight has been finalized. An official announcement could be made Tuesday during a joint conference call to be hosted by Strikeforce and television partner Showtime.

Shamrock, 23-9-2, fights at 185 pounds while Diaz, 18-7, primarily has competed at 160 and 170 pounds. As such, it was not immediately clear what weight the fight between the two California-based fighters will be contested at. However, Diaz has gone on the record before in interviews and stated that he would have no issue going up in weight if the right opportunity presented itself.

As the report mentions, no official weight for the bout has been decided upon yet, although it's likely a catchweight will be established.  More information on that matter will probably become available when Strikeforce makes their official announcement.

Shamrock, a true legend of the sport, is a former King of Pancrase, UFC middleweight champion, and Strikeforce middleweight champion.  Usually considered the first true "mixed martial artist", Shamrock was a prototype for current stars like Georges St. Pierre who combine precise and deadly striking with excellent wrestling and dangerous submissions.  He last competed nearly a year ago in March of '08, suffering a third round TKO loss to Cung Le in a Strikeforce middleweight title bout, breaking his arm after a kick from Le.  The bout was a standup war, although many were surprised by Shamrock's stubborn refusal to take the fight to the ground where it was assumed he would have a considerable advantage.

In Diaz, Shamrock will face a fighter 11 years younger than him, but one who still carries 25 fights worth of pro MMA experience into the cage.  Diaz is known as much for his trash-talking and out-of-the-ring antics, as he for his outstanding grappling and precise boxing.  The Cesar Gracie-trained black-belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu has competed in nearly every major organization, incuding the UFC, Pride, Shooto, EliteXC, Dream, and WEC.   Diaz last saw action in July '08 where he stopped Thomas Denny with strikes in the second round at EliteXC's penultimate event.

An interesting sidebar to this fight is the minor feud between Shamrock, and Diaz's coach and teacher, Cesar Gracie, which led to a bout between the two under the Strikeforce banner in March '06, with Shamrock KO'ing Gracie just 21 seconds into the fight.  The Shamrock vs. Gracie card set the all-time record for attendance at a North American MMA event, drawing over 18,000 fans to the HP Pavillion.

It will remain to be seen if Shamrock and Diaz will come close to that number at HP in April, but I for one am eagerly awaiting the trash talk to start flowing out of two of the best mouths in the business.

Good match…but suggests to me that they aren’t all that interested in weight classes in general. Is this taking place at 170? At least it’s easy to hype, smart first match to book.

by Michael Rome on Feb 10, 2009 4:11 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

exactly...

What weight class is this taking place at? How about a Diaz vs. Lawler rematch? Diaz vs. Riggs?

by steveoc24 on Feb 10, 2009 4:42 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Lawler fights at 185. No difference there.

Riggs doesn’t have near the “star appeal” of a Frank Shamrock matchup.

Somebody frontpage this?

Maybe tidy it up a bit – but isn’t it relatively important?

by rainmaker6 on Feb 10, 2009 4:17 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

It’s important, I am going to wait until tomorrow’s call with an official announcement. It is also very long and more like a press release than a post.

Shamrock looks like diaz on roids.

I would think Diaz would be a huge dog in this matchup when you consider the size?

From the UG:

Scott Coker was on Beatdown yesterday and TJ asked him about potential matchups for the April 11th show. He said they are talking to both Babalu Sobral vs Rafael Fejao about fighting and it looks like it might happen.

by Nick Thomas on Feb 10, 2009 9:23 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

That’s pretty strong. I’m liking how this is shaping up..

From MMAWeekly.com:

For the co-main event of the April card, Coker has offered former EliteXC lightweight champion KJ Noons a fight with Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson. A re-match between EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler and Joey Villasenor is a possibility, as well as a second meeting for Gilbert Melendez and Mitsuhiro Ishida.

A second Showtime event is planned for May at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Wash., site of Strikeforce’s first foray outside California. Ed Soares and Jorge Guimaraes, representatives for former EliteXC fighter Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante, have already cleared him for a bout with Strikeforce light heavyweight Renato "Babalu" Sobral on the card. Sobral is expected to be offered the fight this week, though nothing is set in stone at this point.

Coker says his relationship with Japanese promoters from Dream and Sengoku will be essential for filling 2009’s calendar. In September, he gave standouts Kazuo Misaki and Ishida their first fights for an American promotion, and sees many exciting match-ups possible for as early as May. Among his "dream" fights: Melvin Manhoef vs. Robbie Lawler, Joachim Hansen vs. Josh Thomson, and Shinya Aoki vs. Gilbert Melendez.

"We’re going to continue to expand on that relationship," he said. "We’d like to have some of their top guys come and fight some of our top guys."

In a fight sure to agree with Japanese fans, Coker says he’s considering a main card bout – though not a headliner – between Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson and Bob Sapp, possibly as soon as the Tacoma event.

The only issue I’d have with the fight is that Bob Sapp means almost nothing to the US audience. Still, I feel that the audience for Strikeforce is more likely to know who he is and what his history has been.

They absolutely need to do Strikeforce Primetime to hype this fight, though. It would be the greatest television ever.

One last thing:

When I interviewed Rutten on Monday, we discussed issues ranging from his own MMA career to the reasons he says he would never train Kimbo again, even if someone offered him $1 million.

(emphasis added)

I saw this quote earlier, but I couldn’t view the video from which it’s taken. Does anyone have insight on that? Do we know where Kimbo is training, or where he would be training if not with Bas?

Fightlinker has the goods. It’s an interesting read. Here’s a sample:

I know you’ve worked closely with Kimbo Slice. When do you think we’ll see Kimbo fight again, and will you be in his corner again when he does?
I stopped training Kimbo. I had him six weeks before the last fight (a loss to Seth Petruzelli on October 4), I talked to him about certain things that I didn’t like, and he promised never to do it again, and then he started doing it again. If people come to me and ask me to train them, I want them to do what I tell them to do, because that’s what they came for. … Once you start doing different things, you’re out. It’s not because he got knocked out. This was already in progress long before the fight.

Among his “dream” fights: Melvin Manhoef vs. Robbie Lawler, Joachim Hansen vs. Josh Thomson, and Shinya Aoki vs. Gilbert Melendez.

I’d be thrilled if he could pull off any one of these. All three would be incredible.

by FRANKIE on Feb 10, 2009 11:26 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’d rather see Thompson v. Aoki and Hansen v. Melendez. Aoki would be a very large opponent for Melendez, while Hansen is another former 145lbs. fighter. Plus, stylistically, while Melendez obviously has a ground game, I think him going toe to toe with Hansen and forcing Hansen to work takedown defense would be more appealing than watching Melendez strictly trying to avoid Aoki’s guard.

"BJ on the BE" - Kierkegaard

by Brett Jones on Feb 10, 2009 11:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Thomson vs. Hansen is a fight between champions though. Honestly, I don’t see either your suggested fights or Coker’s suggested fights happening for that very reason. I’d think both companies would want their champs fighting strictly within their own organizations.

WOW

I’m really liking this Strikeforce taking over EXC’s Showtime slot.

Ton’s of PPV level fights on free or nearly free televised cards. Makes the 10 bucks for showtime almost seem like a no brainer if they are indeed going to be putting on 16 cards on Showtime.

Phil Baroni on the UG:

My next STRIKE FORCE fight will be in MAY Seattle

The fight is at welterweight an will take place May in Seattle. Ive started my training camp at Extreme Couture in Las Vegas. Im 205 now an yes I will use Stevia to help me get back down to 170lbs. Coleman has turned me on to Stevia. I used it while training for my last 3 fights. Coleman used it to make 205 an he could not even train for the fight. I think fighting at 170 and on stevia I will be the first STRIKE FORCE welterweight champion.

Im very happy to be fighting in STRIKE FORCE for Scott Coker again. Having done business with Scott Coker in the past, I could not be any happier that he has the CBS an Showtime tv deal. Everyone I have spoken with feels the same way I do from Frank Shamrock to Monte Cox, from Josh Thomson to TJ Thompson from Kevin Randelman to Chuck Zito. From Kung Le to Bruce Lee. I think pretty much the MMA World is happy about this.
Honest promotors are hard to come bye an Im glad to be fighting for one of the few out there.

anyone having flashbacks to proelite, already?

seems like they’re trying to cram an awful lot onto this card in april. what’s the rush? and what’s the timetable for when they’ll do their first cbs show? i would imagine they’d want some of the same guys on that card, if they have any hopes of getting decent ratings. of course, carano on the cbs card would make all the difference… just seems like too much too soon.

Coker has a much better track record, and has stated he won’t push the promotion too far, too soon.

by Mike Fagan on Feb 10, 2009 12:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't worry too much

Coker has been turning a profit with Strike Force for quite some time now and more than likely has no intentions of bucking that trend.

Strike Force just has to get their name fighters out in the public consciousness ASAP.

Until this promotion has actual divisions (that go beyond 4-6 fighters deep), it’s just a fun promotion that puts on fights that don’t mean anything to the ratings. Fun, and I’ll watch, but it’s not earth-shattering.

Other than the UFC who does have such a thing?

No matter who comes along. Rome will not be built in a day. It’s going to take time to put the necissary hype around enough guys to make Joe MMA fan call them contenders.
The Dream partnership, and maybe an Affliction partnership should put plenty of guys in each division to make compelling matchups.

Hwy:
Bigfoot
Pee Wee Herman
Buentello
Overeem
Roy Nelson
Ben Rothwell
Maybe Barnett,Arlovski,Sylvia,Monson,Rizzo,Etc.

LHW:
Farajo
Babalu
Southworth
Maybe Lil Nog,Vlad Mats,Sokodju
Admittedly pretty thin

MW:
Cung Le
Frank Shamrock
Robbie Lawler
Scott Smith
Terry Martin
Joey VSR.
Ninja Rua
Benji Radach
maybe Lindland,Belfort,Prangley etc.

WW:
Diaz
Riggs
Shields
Nick Thompson
Paul Daley

LW:
Noons
Edwards
Thomson
Melendez
Ishida
Aoki
Hansen
Alvarez?

Instantly Strikeforce is the #2 promotion as of right now. And with CBS and Showtime you would have to think they would be an attractive spot for a fighter to ply his trade.

since we are playing the partnership game… what about dream, senogoku, ufc partnership!!!!!!

you can’t call a certain roster a certrain roster based on proposed partnerships.

The UFC doesn’t do partnerships. They do counter-programming.

Strikeforce has already shown that they have and will do partnerships(read affliction,EXC,Dream)

I’m not even going to post the UFC’s roster, but suffice it to say that you’re talking about a top 10- top 20 HW division, an even sadder LHW division, a ‘who wants to get their ass kicked by Anderson Silva’ contest at MW, a ‘who wants to get their ass kicked by GSP, Thiago Alves or Jon Fitch’ contest at WW and a pretty damn decent LW division.

This should be a great matchup as far as packing the house. It’s really weird, though, in terms of size difference. I would have never guessed that they would make this match. You know; I’m still holding out for Frank/Renzo II, but I’m afraid I may never get to see it.

by Cannon Jacques on Feb 10, 2009 5:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I was at Frank/Renzo 1. Pretty lame ending.

Crowd was less than thrilled by that conclusion. In hindsight it was probably an ominous sign of EXC’s fortunes being that it was their 1st show.

I always thought the argument went that Nick Diaz was too small for 170 but too big for 155. Now, he’s going to face a 185er at a 179 lb. catchweight? From that perspective, the match seems odd to say the least. If Shamrock doesn’t win for one reason or another, that’s a decent blow to the proposed rematch with Cung Le.
