Dana White Appreciates the Finer Points of Japanese Culture

Responding to a question at the post-fight press conference about Akihiro Gono's disco routine, Dana White had the following to say about Gono:
I like him...and any of you that know the Japanese culture, they're like that, that's the way they are over there.
You can always count on Dana for some brilliant cultural analysis.

this one is bad
you guys sound like sherdog here
calm down, Sam Caplin
I’m just busting balls…I remember when you guys didn’t take yourself so seriously like 5oz…f*ck you yourself on a post once swore you would never get like that.
the first sign of success…no more nut kicking without the site admins getting butt hurt…has happened to countless blogs…..
Hey, you don’t get that Sam Caplan chedda by being a nice guy.
On a totally unrelated note, be sure to check out WJFK for a breakdown of UWC by WKR! FTW!
hey I’m just saying…my comment was a half ass barely serious one and it got a sam caplan/jeff sherwood response which seems to be a more frequent response as of late.
about 10 months ago Luke mocked suck comments by site owners/admins.. But changing stance comes with success I guess.
“go somewhere else.”
Thanks Sam/Jeff
It does get hard to tell if a comment is joking sarcasm or just rude over the internet and the site seems to be filled with that kind of crap for the last week or so, no wonder the are a bit short of temper lately.
I agree of course...
It just sucks seeing a robot generic been said 1000000x’s by Caplan response by my beloved favorite site.
When the site...
gets bigger we have an obligation to police things to ensure that the level of discussion around here stays at a certain level without falling into the pits of Sherdog. You took a shot at a writer here and believe it or not we work hard to do what we do and it’s not going to be taken lightly by guys who spend countless hours every week working on this site for little reward beyond seeing the site get big traffic. I’ve spent just about every major show for 2 years liveblogging and not going to fight parties and shit. We make sacrifices to do this and to get shit on by a commenter that our work isn’t “good enough” is going to piss us off. Maybe you were joking…but it wasn’t very clear.

With that said...
I just came across sounding really whiny. I’m just trying to make it clear why we react poorly to certain attacks of our work.

Brent and others – my recommendation (not that it’s worth anything) would be to not take it too seriously.
People are bound to criticize – this is the internet. Are you going to start banning people for criticizing the staff?
What does it matter that your readers criticize you.
The fact is they are still coming back to read. And they don’t run a hugely trafficked site like BE.
On another note
I stopped visiting 5ozs because I didn’t like the site. If people don’t like it they’ll stop coming. If they like it then they’ll come (regardless of their criticism).
Part of BE’s strength (not too say that you guys don’t come out with great articles etc) is the community is strong. And part of that is that the staff are members of the community and participate in the discussions.
That’s all good and well. What I don’t need are people who know nothing about blogging telling us what we’re doing wrong. A) There are a ton of bloggers who have serious traffic with very small posts and b) look at our numbers. We’re obviously doing something right.
I’m lucky to be a part of a blog this big, but I am fucking sick of criticism that’s not even remotely thoughtful. If you want to joke, fine. I don’t care. And if you want to criticize, do so intelligently. But if someone wants to be a dickhead, there are other places for it. We all work too hard to make this thing successful.
And seriously, who the hell goes to another person’s site to tell them shit like this?
I’m sticking to my original policy, if you piss me off, I’ll call you on it.
If you don’t like our shit, pound sand and go read something else.
I do love that Craplan is the gold standard for whiny ass bitch though!
LOL
It’s like an archetype – like, in ancient Greek tragedies, a Caplan was still bitching somewhere.

Hey man – I realize people aren’t happy about promoting UWC, but i don’t care. DC is not a fight town and when a promoter who actually knows what they are doing wants to do business in DC and has some bankroll, i want to help. I want MMA to be successful in DC and I want to use my resources to the extent possible to make that happen. If that makes me terrible or whatever, I’m ok with that. I want to know I tried to make MMA something of note in DC. That’s important to me right now.

They culturally have a great sense of humor and capacity to entertain. The story of the weigh ins was Gono’s afro and not GSP or BJ just because it was funny.
There have been tons of goofy entrances in japanese MMA but when Dana White says “that’s the way they are over there” suddenly he’s getting the Kimbo treatment?
Kuwabara Kuwabara
Well, Gono isn’t exactly an ordinary Japanese MMA fighter. His whole routine is pretty unique. It would be kind of like if a Japanese reporter asked Tanigawa about TUF fighters eating jizz-laden sushi and drinking shots of piss, and he replied “those Americans, thats just how they are over there”
It would be closer to someone in Japan saying Americans are all culturally like Carrot Top. Even in Japan Gono would be considered a bit of an odd ball.
Stereotypes are a dangerous thing, I know it’s hard to believe but all Americans don’t love pick up trucks, guns and apple pies.
down here in Georgia they do
I hate big dumb trucks that stupid motherfuckers buy just to drive around the city streets
Gimme 1 Round!
I wanna know if there is a connection
between big dumb trucks and the wearing of Tapout and Affliction shirts…
Gimme 1 Round!
Ha! Rec’d.

I would say it’s not necessarily wrong or ill-intentioned, just a little broad and easily misconstrued.
Well that I can agree with. I guess when you’re top dog, everything you say runs the risk of getting blown of of proportion. Wait a minute, why am I sticking up for Dana anyway?..
Kuwabara Kuwabara
Well I still think he didn’t say anything wrong, certainly nothing to deserve a post like this. I just remembered that my mother always told me any generalisation is a bad one.

And for once...
It has absolutely nothing to do with Dana White and everything to do with his bosses!
Gimme 1 Round!
Everyone knows japan is the world’s leading exporter of weird shit.
