Athletes and Fighters: A BJ Penn Fan's Hangover

As of midnight last night, BJ Penn was my favorite fighter in the world. I always loved his aggressive yet technical fighting style, his brash attitude, and willingness to take risks in his career by taking on bigger guys.

I'm still a BJ Penn fan this morning following his destruction at the hands of Georges St. Pierre, but I can't remember being more disappointed in a fighter.

Star-divide

I feel like I was slapped in the face for believing that BJ was prepared for this fight, ready to give Georges St. Pierre a run for his money in the UFC's welterweight division.

But BJ was actually in better shape for their original match at UFC 58 than he was last night. He insulted his incredibly loyal, passionate, and forgiving fan base by coming into the fight in such terrible shape -- especially when you take into account how much smack he talked before this bout.

The boy from Hilo called GSP a lot of things, the worst of them being 'quitter.' Now MMA fans are calling BJ a quitter for not coming out for the fifth round. But that's wrong. BJ isn't a quitter because his corner very smartly threw in the towel.

BJ quit before the fight started because he wasn't prepared.

Ahead of the event, BJ continually stressed that technique can overcome size and strength differences. He just ignored a few details. Like the fact that superb technique only goes so far when you're exhausted. Inhuman flexibility means nothing when you can't get in enough oxygen. A granite chin will crack if somebody hits it enough times.

BJ also enjoyed calling himself a fighter while deeming GSP nothing but an athlete. I just wish BJ would realize that you need to be both in mixed martial arts, even with his natural gifts.

A true fighter has the will to get in the cage and put his life on the line. A true fighter will move forward against an opponent trying to take his head off. A true fighter will fight anyone put in front of him.

A true athlete will constantly challenge himself. A true athlete will improve his skills on a regular basis. A true athlete will surround himself with the right people.

BJ is a true fighter, but he doesn't have the will, spirit, and perhaps even the confidence to be a a great athlete. And that's just not enough in a world filled with guys like Georges St. Pierre.

*****************************

UPDATE - I just want to point out that I had no intention of taking anything away from GSP's incredible performance and I am not trying to make excuses for BJ. There is no doubt in my mind that GSP is the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world right now.

Rec'd.

Especially for this:

BJ also enjoyed calling himself a fighter while deeming GSP nothing but an athlete. I just wish BJ would realize that you need to be both in mixed martial arts, even with his natural gifts.

Good stuff.

An excellent way to put it into words. Great writing

ridiculous

GSP is just a different animal. He was cruising past Penn’s ground game which is one of the best in the world. Pierre was faster, and in better shape than Penn, but GSP is in better shape than everybody.

Oh I’m definitely not taking anything away from GSP. He is the man.

"BJ didn’t beat himself, GSP beat him. Give GSP the credit he deserves and stop pretending that only BJ mattered in the fight.

GSP kicked BJ’s arrogant ass – end of story."

AFAIK BJ hasn’t spoken in public since the fight.

by MMAEruption on Feb 1, 2009 2:19 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

OK, don’t buy into the propaganda that the UFC fed us with their preview shows. BJ was prepared, GSP was just better.

I am a BJ fan to the end, but he is a LW and should stay there. We are all impressed by the taking on bigger guys thing, but he rarely wins those fights. Stay at LW now and dominate.

All of the credit in this fight should go to GSP.

If you're not submitting, you're just rolling around with another guy.

Couldn’t disagree more. What about BJ’s performance made it look like he was prepared? He was slower from the initial bell than he’s ever been in a fight. He gassed our at about 6 minutes (take a look at him @ the first takedown in second round). Do you really think that say, you put Frankie Edgar (even small for 155) against Jon Fitch, Edgar would be limp by 6 minutes? Weight does make a difference, but not that fast with well conditioned athletes. Look at BJ’s speed in the first round, versus his speed in the 3rd against Sherk. GSP’s great, but Penn – much as I used to love him – didn’t allow GSP to show how great GSP could be.

He’s still the best 155er in the world – he just needs to realize that strength and size, um, matter. That’s why they have weight classes and all.

Wow, you finally admit that.

Um

I picked GSP

I meant about size difference playing a role in a fight.

I never said it didn’t.

I don’t think he was out of shape. He hadn’t fought in close to a year and probably had a lot of rust on his game. Anyways, it was proven 2 years ago he wasn’t the elite at WW and that reality was finally stamped home.

BJ had a lot of things working against him that I don’t think he acknowledged his cardio was there the gameplan however wasn’t

by drano on Feb 1, 2009 3:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I was rooting for GSP the whole way and was happy to see BJ get pummeled, but it might be hasty to say that BJ was out of shape. It looked like it maybe, but if GSP was fighting someone 15 pds his senior, racked with flexible muscle and technique, pinning him to the cage, peppering him with wonderful jabs, passing his guard and feeding him elbows from on top, do you not think that GSP would have been a little more exhausted as well?

I’m not saying he wasn’t in shape, but when you’re outclassed like that by a bigger fighter, it would take it’s toll on the best of us.

BJ is my favorite fighter and I second this. The whole athlete vs fighter, hard worker vs natural talent dichotomy has gotten way overblown. They both have numerous talents and GSP was able to use his to greater effect than BJ was. It is easy to imagine an alternate universe where BJ was given the nickname “rush” and GSP was called “the prodigy”.

by Jahbulon on Feb 1, 2009 4:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know, the “hard worker v. natural talent” angle kinda hit the nail on the head here, no? BJ didn’t work hard enough in prep to let his talent show in the fight. I’ve never seen BJ so out of sharpness that he couldn’t even parry a jab, until Saturday.

by jeffro231 on Feb 2, 2009 4:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That was teh vaseline

The vaseline interfered with BJs ability to parry a jab.

by mythbuster on Feb 2, 2009 4:58 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

BJ wasn’t bad, GSS was just too good, too strong and too fast. If BJ had not shown up in shape, the fight would have ended much sooner.

Not to mention he can take an ass whoopin. Jesus was that kid taking some hits. Props to him just for not going unconcious in there.

BJ has some of the most resistant skin I have ever seen in MMA.

I feel sorry for Kenny Florian...

The truth is the extra weight would have affected him whether he thought so or not. Get ready Ken Flo.

by Pandanus on Feb 2, 2009 1:56 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah should be a good fight maybe BJ might be content at lightweight after last night

by drano on Feb 2, 2009 1:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That’s what I’m hoping. Kenny definitely deserves a shot and it would be a big fight.

by MMAEruption on Feb 2, 2009 8:34 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think BJ was prepared, but GSP was just so good, he made Penn look bad. Unfortunate, but I guess that was the risk.

by INGO B on Feb 2, 2009 1:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I so agree with the original article here. Penn was in worse shape here than he was for the first fight.

Seriously, those who thought it was just because GSP was better and not because of Penn’s conditioning, did you watch the fight? Penn was gasping for air at the first takedown in the second round. No fighter, no matter how outweighed, no fighter should gas out in 6 minutes. Watch when BJ gets taken down early in the second – he lays on his back and gasps. No way that GSP could have “tired” him out that much that quick – especially when 3 minutes of the first were laying on the fence.

That’s not strength or strategy – BJ was not prepared. He was not crisp, he was not sharp. Look at all the footage of all the fights he’s had – he’s never been that slow to react to punches or strikes, even in the first round. It took GSP until the 3rd round to pass guard – and that’s because Penn could hardly lift his legs, look at the fight!

Not to rip on GSP – he was awesome – he likely could have beaten the “best” Penn, even if the best Penn had shown up. Frankly, I feel like Penn deprived the GSP fans of seeing the best GSP – George didn’t have to be at his best to beat BJ. But we’ll never know, because BJ doesn’t have the heart or the drive to prepare.

If BJ shows up in this same shape for the Florian fight, Florian will destroy him.
