BJ's Downfall: Ego!

BJ's ego is his worst enemy.  Think of BJ's camp.  Training in Hilo Hawaii with his brother?  I mean WTF?!?!?!?  There's a reason that guys flock to Greg Jackson's camp in New Mexico.  But BJ just thinks training with his brother is cool.  Stupid.

GSP had a very sophtisticaded game plan.  The idea was to ruin BJ's boxing by stiffening up his shoulders by making BJ exchange in a wrestling match.  There's no way BJ's brother thinks of shit like that.

Again, it's bj's ego that destroys him.

How is that ego? That falls under loyalty, not ego. And I hate BJ Penn but I’ll still defend the guy that training with who he trained with is fine.

Yes, I’m sure part of it is loyalty. But as Ihasafi said, it may also be not wanting to hear negative things.

Should Venus and Serrena Williams (top tennis pros) still just train with their father because of loyalty.?

BJ won’t get near a top-class camp because he doesn’t want to risk being told he is NOT the greatest fighter ever. Heaven forbid someone telling him he has holes in his game or that he needs to work harder…

Wrong!!

BJs worst enemy was GSP….

Give the guy some credit, dammit… GSP beat the shit out of BJ, BJ didn’t beat himself…

BJ didn’t beat himself.

How’s that when the dude is shotgunning syrup and refuses to train as hard as any other world champion would?

Beer bonging burritos

Good training for a battle with Kobeyashi not so good for GSP

Hmm…seems to me BJ’s training camp has been fine the last 3 fights where he literally ran right through all 3 opponents. Why must we questions those methods now?

Fact of the matter is, he ran into a bigger, stronger, faster fighter last night and couldn’t do anything against him.

That’s really all there is to it. I seriously doubt changing training camps would have altered those results.

BJ needs yesmen

It was the same as when he was coach during Ultimate Fighter. In his “Island-style” training, he spends more time sitting on his ass talking crap in the gym and throwing shakas to adoring islanders than throwing punches. BJ is sparring with Troy Mandaloniz who couldn’t win a fight during TUF and GSP is rolling with Rashad Evans. You’re the king of Hilo BJ, go speedwalk for another shaved ice so you can move up another weight class. Really look at the last three. Pulver has proven to be over the hill, BJ was gassed with Stevenson and Sherk had idiotic strategy and abandoned any shots and tried to trade with BJ with his midget arms. He was opened mouthed breathing in all three. As a fan of BJs prodigal potential, it is sad to see.

I’m still trying to figure out what the hell Sherk’s plan was. I don’t think he even knew what his plan was. That was the single dumbest plan I’ve ever seen. Bar none.

And why didn’t he change his plan up after it clearly wasn’t working after the first two rounds? After eating jab after jab, did his corner just sort of say “well that was the gameplan, looks like we’re cooked”? Shouldn’t they have said "Sean, you need to get a takedown and a different approach.

Sherk bought the hype that bj couldn’t be taken down. Sherk decided instead to have a boxing match with BJ. Dumb plan. Unless BJ does something drastic to take himself to the next level, e.g., move to a real camp, his days are numbered as LW champ. GSP just gave all the LW’s the blue print for beating Penn.

Its funny that he talked so much shit. Who took a trip to the hospital this time

BJ wasn't just training with his brother...

He had the likes of Justin McCully, Troy Mandaloniz and Kendall Grove at his dispense.

It’s kinda funny how GSP fans are still defensive after people say anything besides “GSP’s superior fighting style destroyed him and he had no choice but be destroyed because GSP is just way better”.

The fact is, a lot of GSP’s strength comes from his lack of ego. He’s so down to earth, he thus takes nothing for granted, respects his opponents, and thus trains harder. He doesn’t look at himself as God’s gift to fighting, he looks at himself as always needing to improve and extend himself. If he had a huge ego it wouldn’t be possible to think this.

Bj’s case is a good example of premium talent that was capped by his own ego. This led to inferior training, lack of self-honesty, and a poorer performance in the fight. After watching that fight, you see nothing but upside for GSP, and a limit on what BJ is capable of.

So don’t worry everybody, GSP won because of two reasons, he was the better fighter, partly because his ego was smaller than BJ’s.
