UFC 94 Winners And Losers
A little analysis on the winners and losers of UFC 94:
Winners:
Georges St Pierre: What more can be said about GSP? He out struck one of the best strikers in MMA. He tookdown with ease a guy who supposedly had one of the best takedown defense in the sport. And lastly, he easily passed the great guard of BJ Penn. St Pierre may just be destined for a showdown with Anderson Silva to prove who is the best pound for pound fighter in MMA. St. Pierre is such an athlete I don't know who can beat him. If he comes in to the Thiago Alves fight in this shape he will walk right through the guy. He can wrestle, strike, dominate in his oppenents guard, and has the cardio of a marathon runner. Amazing performance.
Lyoto Machida: Machida had a dominating performance against Thiago Silva. His awkward style give opponents the fits. You can't be aggressive against him because that is what he wants to do so he can counter strike. Some call his style boring but he proved tonight he is one of the top fighters in the world. It will be exciting to see what strategies opponents will develop to counter his awkward style. This guy will be champion before the end of the year.
Jon Jones: Whoa!!! Where did this kid come from? Suplexes, throws, spinning back fists, spin kicks, and takedowns. This kid threw everything at Bonner but the kitchen sink (ok, so I used a cliche). That and he is only 21. If the kid gets some cardio, which was not bad to begin with, he will become a rising star very quickly. Hopefully he is not the next Houston Alexander.
Clay Guida: In the post show conference Guida referred to himself as "The TUF Slayer." He is a stud. He smothers opponents with cardio that does not stop. He was all over Diaz in this fight. I think if he improves on his striking and becomes less of a wild brawler in that respect it would be great to watch him try to go five rounds with BJ Penn.
Losers:
BJ Penn: I felt bad for Penn. There was nothing he could do to stop the quicker, bigger, and stronger St. Pierre. This performance tonight does not take away from the fact that he is still the lightweight champion and one of the best fighters around. He just met his match tonight and St. Pierre really has his number, well actually everyones number. Next up for the champ is Kenny Florian. A motivated Penn could run right through Florian and maybe set up a fight down the road with Guida. It is safe to say tha Penn should stay in the lightweight division.
Thiago Silva: He looked like he had no gameplan for this fight. He is an explosive and aggressive fighter and that is exactly what Machida wanted him to do. You would think he would come in with a better plan with all the tape on Machida, but that is not what happened. Hopefully with a little more training Silva can rebound and climb the ladder in the stacked light heavyweight division.
Stephan Bonner: I have never been that impressed by this guy. He is and always will be a mid carder. A very workmen like style and after this loss I don't see much of a future for him in the UFC. Maybe he will prove me wrong.
Random Note: I saw Shogun Rua in the crowd. This was the first time I saw him at a UFC event not gassed. :)

He [Guida] smothers opponents with cardio that does not stop.
Eh. Guida does not impress me. He hugged Diaz for 15 minutes basically and still lost the fight on my card.
I feel bad for any one that faces him. He just molests you against the cage for 15 minutes and because the crowd eats up whatever you tell them, they think he’s exciting.

I would have actually liked him
If he just started talking mad shit about Stockton and Nick and Nate Diaz in the post fight I could actually like him despite his crappy fight style. “Hey Nate… you’re just a punk!! And you know what?? So is your bitch-ass brother!! I’ll run train on both of you and your garbage-ass Cesar Gracie camp. Then when I’m done beating you and your whole camp down, I’ll get the rest of the Metal Mulisha bros and we’ll run train on your mom and your sister too! WHAT PUNK?!? WHAT PUNK?!? 209 SUCKS! STOCKTON – HOME OF PUNK BITCHES!!”
I need to see some real smack talk like that.
Guida is supposed to be metal – have a fuckin metal attitude lay’n’pray hamster.
But since he doesn’t and his attitude is as meek as his fight style… I fuckin hate that dude.
Gimme 1 Round!
Apparently there was some talking during the fight. I distinctly heard Diaz call Guida a motherfucker after Guida said something while they were clinched up.
Thats why he should have REALLY talked shit
The Diaz’s are fuckin punks that think they are hard cause they are from a city where gun violence has yet to appear so people still scrap in the streets. 209 dawg 209! SHUT UP STOCKTON SUCKS. That place is stuck in the 50’s. Its like a bad outtake from the Outsiders
Nick: Hey Nate, I don’t think you ought to be in this rumble. Nate:Why? I’ve always come through before ain’t I? Nick: Ya, but you was in shape before. You ain’t lookin’ so good, you’re too tensed up all the time. Jake Shields: C’mon Nick, let him fight man. Everyone’s tensed up before a rumble. Skin against skin, he ain’t gonna get hurt is he? (slightly pushes Ponyboy/Nate and slaps Nick’s back.) Nick: We will need every man we can get but i dunno. Nate: look, if it was knives or chain or somethin’ it’d be different, I’ll be ok. Nick: well ok but you be careful. Nate: I will be,(looks at Shields) how come you don’t worry ‘bout him so much? Nick: This is one kid brother I don’t have to worry about. This kid can use his head. At least for one thing to grow hair on. Shields (yells): what you doin’?
Gimme 1 Round!

Yeah, it’s hard to get behind a guy that acts classy after a win. Give me a break. The Diaz routine is old and nobody respects that kind of classless bull shit.

Guida is a boring fighter though
You gotta have something for you. His personality is as boring as his fights.
Gimme 1 Round!
guida will never improve his striking… people have been saying “if guida improves…” he will be a threat. He never has and never will.
His game is to grab hold of you, occasionally slam you, and hold on to you again for 15 minutes. His game is cardio and control… hell he rarely even throws when he has a hold of you.
He is a perfect gate keeper. If you can’t deal with his wrestling and strength, you can’t begin to fuck with the griffins, maynards, and sherks of the division.
he will NEVER get to BJ penn… and if he did he would be mauled.
GSP is entering the Fedor realm of greatness to me and i say this because to enter that realm, one needs to be able to beat someone by their opponents specialty.
Look at what GSP did to both Hughes, Kos, and Fitch..he out wrestled them. Look at what he did to BJ…he out struck him. That is greatness.
Serra loss still looks bad. Also shows how you can beat GSP. He dominates Alves than I think we have a legit conversation.
You can’t be serious after what he has done his last 4 fights now. Please tell me you’re joking.

Possibly. The knock against Fedor remains the level of competition.
GSP will undoubtedly pass up Fedor on the list of all-time greats fairly soon, if both keep doing what they do. When Fedor was GSP’s age, his “big wins” list read Nog and Herring.

He beat the shit out of Hughes 2 x now. I think he’s good there lol

So you base your analysis of greatness on title defenses rather than the actual level of competition faced?
GSP has quite possibly had the greatest level of competition in his career of any fighter, ever. Only the losses to Hughes and Serra stop him from being the greatest fighter of all time already. As it is, he has some distance to go to overtake Fedor.

You obviously didn't see Penn vs Pulver
Cause Shogun was there while he was still in great shape. Wearing his Koral sponser shirt no less – I was very surprised Rogan didn’t mention him
Gimme 1 Round!
Winners: Guys that won
Losers: Guys that lost

I am surprised there is not write up on the Jones elbowing Bonnar to the back of the head and Rogan getting so excited about it. It was an illegal blow and yet it was celebrated.

Blows to the back of the head during standup are generally ignored, because you’re supposed to protect your own damn head while you’re standing up.

At the time it happened, they thought it was a spinning back fist, not an elbow. I doubt they realized it was to the back of the head. Also, like Michael said, generally shots to the back of the head while standing are ignored.
