Did GSP Cheat?

B.J. Penn's camp has filed a formal complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission over Vaseline that was allegedly rubbed on Georges St. Pierre's back between rounds one and two.  UFC president Dana White said at the post-fight press conference that he was aware of the complaint, and said he personally witnessed members of the commission take the Vaseline away from GSP's camp and rebuke them in the Octagon between rounds.

"I saw the commission jump up there and flipping out," said Dana White.  They said one of the guys was rubbing Vaseline on Georges' back in between rounds.  It was one and two, I think."

"The guys from the athletic commission went up there and started screaming at them.  Knocked the Vaseline and kicked the Vaseline out of the Octagon."

White added that "some Vaseline on a guy's back didn't change the outcome of that fight, but you don't do it," and said the blame should fall on the cornerman responsible and not GSP.

"If a guy was intentionally putting Vaseline on a guy's back, he should never corner a mixed martial arts fight again."

As for what becomes of the complaint now, White said it's out of his hands.

"Who knows.  That's up to the commission."

That would explain why GSP was able to take side mount at will with ease and dominate the guard. I still think there is no excuse for the dominating brutal beating Penn received.

Do you think it will or should be ruled a No Contest?

GSP said the commission threw a towel in and the Vaseline was wiped off before the round started. And as Brent already said, if it was that much of a problem why wasn’t it brought up during the fight instead of after it?

GSP was simply the better fighter.

I don’t think it changed the outcome of that fight, it was pretty lopsided. I’m sure it will be investigated but I can’t see them overturning the decision on that.

Yeah...

you don’t reverse the outcome. But god do I not want to deal with this becoming a week or two long extravaganza of excuses.

It was BJ Penn fighting…you had to have at least expect something.

by iiowyn on Feb 1, 2009 3:48 AM EST up reply actions

BJ is officially the biggest crybaby in all of MMA, but why am I surprised there is always an excuse whenever BJ gets beat up. After all the crap that he talked it’s only fitting that he quit before the last round and now has another excuse as to why GSP manhandled him he’s a joke.

by Raker on Feb 1, 2009 3:48 AM EST reply actions

Because

BJ Penn almost never gets beat up.

He’s only been beaten up twice…by Matt Hughes (when he legitimately broke his rib early in the fight) and just now.

by rainmaker6 on Feb 1, 2009 3:51 AM EST up reply actions

cough

Broken rib was never proven – excuse

Was proven

“The medical report conducted by Dr. Sameer Nagda, shed light on Penn’s injuries he got in the bout with Hughes. The doctor’s exam confimed Penn fracture the right tenth costochondral junction and he also strain the adjacent intercostal musculature and oblique musculature.”

I stand corrected

never saw any of those. Hughes would have finished him anyways

UFC 94...

Will be remembered in a couple of weeks for this “scandal”.
Specially since ESPN is heavily covering it and more news like this comes out:

http://www.fightopinion.com/2009/02/01/does-the-ufc-now-have-their-own-version-of-the-akiyama-scandal/

That is, if speculation runs wildly like they usually do on the internet.
Doesn’t help that the whole Margarito scandal was just last week.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Feb 1, 2009 5:08 AM EST up reply actions

There is no scandal it’s just usual BJ Penn crying about losing a fight, the guy can’t take a loss like a man it’s beyond pathetic. GSP destroyed him and made him quit, the NSAC will deny the complaint and in 2 weeks we’ll be talking about UFC 95 free on Spike.

by Raker on Feb 1, 2009 5:10 AM EST reply actions

No scandal for GSP

The only scandal tonight is UFC got away with a boat load of money selling this obvious mismatch as the greatest MMA contest of all time.

Isn’t that every PPV?

The Biggest Fight in UFC History!

my girlfriend raised this issue with me tonight...

‘wasnt lesnar and couture the biggest fight in UFC history?’

hard to argue with her.

Obvious mismatch?

hardly. in any case, Im off to watch De La Hoya/Pac man again.

by Discman2 on Feb 1, 2009 5:36 AM EST up reply actions

It was an obvious mismatch to me

And I bet 300 bucks on Manny to KO DLH in the 9th – 12th rounds. Obviously I HATE Nacho for convincing DLH to quit on his stool in the 8th. I had a FAT payday set up

Gimme 1 Round!

Some fighters believe...

that Vaseline on the body actually closes your sweat glands and make you susceptible to overheating.

by nitro on Feb 1, 2009 10:02 AM EST reply actions

I've heard this before

I’m inclined to believe them… It clogs up your pores and supposedly prevents you from sweating. That would definitely make you prone to heat injury

Gimme 1 Round!

GSP should be banned for a year, stripped of his title and the fight should be ruled a NC…I hate cheating and cheaters, not to put all the blame on GSP, it was his corner that did it but they are a “team”…blatent cheating imo (for the record I’m not really a fan of either gsp or penn)

by Reaser on Feb 1, 2009 11:17 AM EST reply actions

LOL

Watch the gif. Its not cheating. BJ is making a mountain out of a molehill. Its the leftovers from his face and he barely had any on his face. I use more Vaseline than that in 20 seconds on a lonely Saturday night if no fights are on TV

Gimme 1 Round!

by Phildo on Feb 2, 2009 12:38 AM EST up reply actions

From memory there were a few times in round 2 where BJ attempted to use a rubber guard to stop GSP from beating on him, maybe it could have made it a bit harder to keep that position. But it just would have delayed the pain, eventually GSP would have been sweaty enough to make that sort of defence quite difficult anyway, and BJ didn’t seem to have any answers to GSP’s wrestling, Vaseline or not.

GSP’s corner probably need to be fined for such an unprofessional lapse in judgement, but I don’t think it’s enough to reverse the outcome of the match, and something tells me BJ wouldn’t exactly be gunning for a rematch.

by brad23 on Feb 2, 2009 12:29 AM EST reply actions

To say GSP’s corner ‘ritual’ is an elaborate scheme to cheat simply in an attempt to negate a single aspect of BJ’s guard is seriously grasping at straws.

The fanbois need something to bitch about after each event and so it goes…
