Chug Chug! Thanks B.J.!

3766-stpierremiller067ufc52_medium

I'll make it quick.  Thanks B.J.!  Good job showing up in shape!

I resigned myself to syrup drinking between rounds 2-3.  Georges St. Pierre is clearly the best fighter on the planet not named Fedor Emelianenko or Anderson Silva.  B.J. Penn is just an undisciplined talent who will never reach his potential.  Syrup drinking will be youtubed by Saturday.

But hey, Lyoto Machida looked good.

Man… :(

Sorry man. I wanted BJ to win.

it wasnt about bj coming in out of shape or anything.. I wanted him to win and im a really big bj fan too, but he was just outclassed by GSP..

Yes...

I agree with this. GSP tired hit out with his wrestling, striking form top position, and size advantage.

by Cannon Jacques on Feb 1, 2009 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

I think it was just a good game plan. The only time he wanted to stand with bj was after he wore him out with his wrestling.. I am admittedly a big bj fan, but i have to give gsp his well deserved props..

I wonder, can he be that effective in his takedowns against alves? Kos couldnt take him down and is much much bigger than bj. but i think gsp can.

Hughes got Thiago down, and GSP handily won the takedown contest with Koscheck. We also need to take into account that Koscheck fought Alves on one week’s notice.

GSP will tear Alves to shreds.

Enjoy the syrup

BJ showed heart, but very impressive display from GSP.

BJ’s going to kill Ken Flo now.

Because...

believe it or not but the “arena fans” do seem to like Machida more than the hardcore “he’s boring” fans do.

He got a noticeably loud cheer at the weigh ins.

Yeah.

Did you know we are in high demand, Laura?

Yah

The type of fans that go to events often generally respect him. I definately do over the guys that throw sloppy haymakers until they both gas and lean on each other on the fence while the ref call futilely for action

Did Penn look bad or did GSP make him look bad?

That is the question in my mind. BJ did nothing to suggest those two should have been fighting.

by adavis1138 on Feb 1, 2009 1:03 AM EST reply actions

From the first round it was obvious that GSP was trying to make this as physically demanding as possible. No matter what kind of shape Penn is in I’m doubtful he could win this type of fight against a guy like GSP.

by yngjzy on Feb 1, 2009 1:08 AM EST up reply actions

yeh

um that’s some crazy gameplanning right there.

To base your attack on the physiological effect it will have on your opponent’s body (ok leg kicks do this too) but wrestling to nullify striking…..??

by rainmaker6 on Feb 1, 2009 1:12 AM EST up reply actions

Yeh i know

I think that’s awesome and Greg Jackson is a genius….

Next he’ll be like “going for kimura’s tires out your opponent’s calves so they can’t get as much spring in their take downs…..”

by rainmaker6 on Feb 1, 2009 1:16 AM EST up reply actions

BJ couldn’t overcome the size, strength and athleticism of GSP. Technique has its limits. Watch BJ destroy smaller 155s. Looking at GSP’s fight history he has fought so many tough guys and has only lost twice. His schedule is like the Anti-Fedor (minus a few).

by Sokonojudo on Feb 1, 2009 1:08 AM EST reply actions

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! anytime BJ Penn gets his ass kicked is a good night. amazing job by GSP … he looked like a machine out there.

and Machida proved some nay-sayers wrong. great night of fights!

GSP was too much for Penn

Wow – the difference in how much they have improved is astounding.

I think GSP was simply too strong.

But did you guys watch the GSP post-fight interview
something like….
- I planned for a wrestling match so that the blood from BJ’s arms will flow to his shoulders (or whatever) so that he wouldn’t be able to throw his hands loosely….

I think Greg Jackson just took gameplanning to an whole ’nother level…

by rainmaker6 on Feb 1, 2009 1:10 AM EST reply actions

Who doesn't really really want to see GSP fight Anderson Silva

I friggin do…so bad. Alves is a great warm up fight for preparing for Anderson.

Shouldn’t look past Alves though – boy has dynamite in his hands.

"No one ever done that to BJ PENN" KENFLO

My exact thought, but I’ll add that nobody ever did that to an in shape or out of shape BJ. Can’t we just admit that GSP is the best fighter of the two or do we need another rematch?

by spectaa on Feb 1, 2009 1:46 AM EST reply actions

...

George was passing his guard in the 2nd round! This IS technique. One cannot diminish the significance of the win by saying GSP won on strength, weight and conditioning. He was outstriking Penn and on every other level Penn was getting his &^% kicked.

So much for BS trash talking by BJ.

That’s it, I was wondering what BJ reminded me of.

by iiowyn on Feb 1, 2009 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

I've given this some thought...

Go with the real thing, not that corn syrup sugary shit — that stuff will hurt you. Oh, and be sure to warm it up a little bit — so it goes down nice and smooth.

I'm just a dude who's trying to put it together.

by mma_dude on Feb 1, 2009 2:20 AM EST reply actions

I sort of couldn’t believe that you took that bet, but I understand the temptation. Going for BJ was risky, but if it worked you look way cooler than going for GSP and winning.

I think Alves will be a good fight. He’s big and quick, and if you compare how the two defeated Koscheck, Alves’ was better. Of course this doesn’t mean much, but I think that Alves has come a long way, and if he can get a few licks in to GSP, we’ll have a little bit of a battle. It all depends on how much Alves learned from his loss to Fitch. GSP could double the beatdown Fitch put on him.

You gotta love Machida. He’s like a Ferrari out there. Dancing and striking, Silva looked like he was just standing there. So wonderful.

by Dooda on Feb 1, 2009 2:29 AM EST reply actions

BJ got straight up Owned tonight. For all the shit he talked? wow did he get totally humbled.

by lbk on Feb 1, 2009 2:43 AM EST reply actions

Anderson “Don’t Believe the Hype” Silva simply isn’t worthy of “holding a candle” to either Fedor or GSP. Get your shotgun ready and dip it in the barrel – next up, Thales “The Guppie” Leties!

by GhostMilk on Feb 1, 2009 2:59 AM EST reply actions

indeed

Maybe this fight will make Penn realize that he needs to go to a good camp with trainers and fighters who are his equal or better. Or maybe he crawls into a hole and refuses to change and so starts the downward spiral.

I’d like to see Penn enter a period of true rededication to the fighting game, but I doubt it.

by missmanners on Feb 1, 2009 4:59 AM EST reply actions

Wait...

Weren’t you saying how great of shape he is in? How he incline benches 95 lb dumbbells for reps? When the only video I’ve ever seen him in training shows him struggling to put up 150 lbs 10 times

Gimme 1 Round!

by skwirrl on Feb 1, 2009 5:34 AM EST up reply actions

yes

I did see a video of that, but cardio issues aside, it’s the fact that in facing an opponent who pushed him (and ultimately dominated him), it’s clear, to me at least, that Penn’s skillset has not evolved. I was hoping that it had, but I can admit that I was wrong. Penn needs to go to Couture or ATT, or swallow his pride and go to Jackson and rededicate and develop further virtually all aspects of his game.

by missmanners on Feb 1, 2009 9:29 AM EST up reply actions

B.J. needs to get G.S.P to train him

by midbc on Feb 1, 2009 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

sounds like you're frustrated that you picked Penn to win

"B.J. Penn is just an undisciplined talent who will never reach his potential. "

sounds more like you’re frustrated that you picked Penn and have to drink syrup…Penn was outclased at 170 fighting GSP, but not outclased fighting Hughes at his prime. Is there anyone who can tackle GSP at 170? Not likely, but this shouldn’t take anything away from Penn’s acomplishments as a fighter, specifically at 155. At lightweight, Penn is the equivalent of GSP at Welter. Penn’s accomplishments at lightweight demonstrates his diciplined talent and ability to reach his potential, at his natural weight class.

GSP vs Anderson Silva

Don’t be so quick to say Silva’s better P4P than GSP. I think we need to see that fight. If BJ can move up to fight GSP, then GSP can move up to fight Silva.

And I think GSP can beat him.

Keep Swillin',
