Paulo Filho Reveals That Depression Was Reason for DREAM.12 Cancellation, Not Visa Problems
An interview with Terra Magazine which was translated by URDirt.com reveals the news and contradicts earlier reports:
"However, after beating the dangerous Dutch striker Melvin Manhoef in July in Japan, a resident of Rio Niterói only fought once again in a national event still lacked a commitment killed by a depression.
Paulão should have fought the Dream again in late October, but missed the event at the last minute. Officially claimed had failed to Japanese visa, but later revealed that the true cause of his absence was the depression."
They also confirmed that Filho's depression was caused by an addiction to sleeping pills. A problem that is plauging a lot more fighters these days and we are familiar with due to the Karo Parisyan pulling out at UFC 106.
"Two years ago, the addiction to sleeping pills Paulão led to a depression which disturbs him to this day. During this period, Paulão lost the belt of World Extreme Cagefighting to an American wrestler infinitely inferior to him, the median Chael Sonnen."
This is a real drag and bad news for Fihlo and fight fans. As much as people like to hate on Paulo, there's nothing funny about mental health issues, drug addiction and depression. Here's hoping he'll be able to put his problems behind him and once again fight up to his abilities.

How dare you this is horrible I’m never reading BE again and I’m unfollowing you on twitter NYAH! It’s cool.
I wondered if this was the case when Filho just didn’t show for the card…the guy needs to spend some more time at an in-patient facility if it’s impacting his ability to work and live his life so badly. Hope he gets the treatment he needs, because if he’s not healthy enough to fight, he’s not earning money.
Wow, what a dig at Chael Sonnen in there too…. lol

Yep. That is a pretty douche move putting that in there.

Blatant fighter bashing
I’m sure you thought the Okami fight was lay n pray too. BE really needs to institue a Vote Down feature.
that was great

I wish him the best. Having dealt with serious depression I know how easy it is to talk yourself out of doing things that will help you out. To the everyday person it may seem like a lame excuse, but it’s impossible to comprehend the crippling anxiety and lack of motivation.
People get to the point where they will lie to the people who care about them to make it impossible for them to be helped. I can say that If he is being honest about his situation, he had no choice in the matter, his depression made the decision for him.
Chael "Infinitely Inferior" Sonnen
ftw

I was thinking
“The Median” Chael Sonnen had an interesting ring to it.

Chael Sonnen is the sum of all fighters divided by the number of fighters.
Get well soon, Paul Son.

This is Gold, Jerry, Gold. For some reason, that line makes me crack up, but is also very true.
It's not true
If Chael was “infinitely” inferior, Filho would have manhandled him. It is sad to see a guy who can’t control his own actions and addictions trying to trash another man’s victory over him. What a disgrace Filho has become.
I hope none of the mods here delete my comments, b/c I am just trying to defend Chael from this unwarrented bashing. “Infinitely inferior”… pfft gimme a break.

Well
He probably also caused a few depression cases for anyone who paid a bunch of cash or had to watch that fight against Sonnen.

Why do translations from Brazilian Portuguese always sound so epic?

No way, he’s depressed because Rickson armbar’d him again for his 600th win

Someone needs to tell this guy...

That it’s ok to be depressed and seek help…
