"Matt Hammill’s mother and sister (thanks Juls!) were seated directly behind me, and as Hammill lay on the mat after receiving endless blows, his mother wailed, and I waffled, chickening out of taking a photo of her, as her cries were so loud, other photographers were looking away because the sobs were so incredibly sad to hear. I still hear her and see her in my head, Hammill’s sister holding her, softly saying, "He’s all right, he’s all right," while UFC staff were coordinating over walkies to find someone to escort her away from the cage."

Ever since this, I’ve been of the opinion that spouses, parents and children just shouldn’t be ringside for fights.

I actually thought that was a great moment...
Mark showing his girls that he is okay and introducing them to the man who just beat him so they understood that it wasn’t an act of aggressive hatred or anything…just his job.
I know…I know…now everyone comes along to lecture me.

I’m not against fighters having their family there at the fight, and if they lose (especially if it’s not pretty) Mark Coleman handled it great there. I think it’s a great moment as well.

I also think it was a great moment…
I hate kids and I love it when there parents screw them up and this was the moment that they will look back on and perhaps get help for. Sure it is logical to say it was useful to show them it was a job and he was ok, but these are little girls. If there is one think I have learned it is that little girls are rarely logical and when they become women, they are even less logical.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
this picture is beautiful
I’ve never seen it before and it is just so… human. Really awesome.

Hamill’s mother was sobbing behind me. Couldn’t bring myself to take a photo. Would’ve been gorgeous, but something felt wrong

And they were probably cheering their asses off when Matt almost decapitated Mark Munoz with that head kick. I just can’t feel any sympathy for relatives of MMA fighters as they chose that profession thus as a relative you have to be prepared for both cheerful moments and moments that just aren’t quite so glorious.
Good point.
Just like war. It’s always ok if it’s the other side that’s losing.

That Coleman picture
is stunning. i’d never seen it before but the phrase “a picture speaks a thousand words” comes to mind. The shot of Hammill’s mum would have probably also impressive however ruthless (in telling a story, not that i’d be impressed by the sight of her crying, if im making sense)..but i can totally sympathise with Esther Lin for deciding to leave it.
