Carlos Condit Out of UFC 108 Fight With Paul Daley, Dustin Hazelett In

Photo

MMAUnltd is reporting that the fight between Carlos Condit and Paul Daley is off:

Carlos Condit has suffered an injury and has been forced to withdraw from his UFC 108 contest against hard-hitting Brit Paul Daley, MMAUnltd.com has learned from a source close to the contest.

We were told that a replacement is being sought for the event on January 2nd.

This was a highly anticipated fight and it continues the trend of injuries across UFC cards, 108 has been especially hard hit.

Rather than find a replacement it almost seems like 108 could stand to be canceled.  With Rampage Jackson saying he is going to come back to finish out his contract they could scratch the event and its main event of Thiago Silva v. Rashad Evans and free up Evans for the grudge match with Jackson.

Something has to give though as it is very clear that a card with Gilbert Yvel in the featured undercard bout is in a considerable amount of trouble.

[UPDATE] - Paul Daley has commented on the situation to Fighters Only:

“I'd [accept] any fight.. I just wanna fight. Condit is a big pussy IMO, I have inside information on that dude....it's all good as long as I fight,” he wrote, a comment that is sure to enrage former WEC welterweight champion Condit.

A source close to Daley said the British welterweight is under the impression Condit had not begun a proper training camp, and is questioning how long Condit had known he would not be fighting. “Paul has spent a shitload of money on this training camp out of his own pocket, and his team have bought non-refundable tickets to go out to the US for the fight so hopefully Paul gets another opponent for this card, he is really pissed off,” the source said.

In his post on The Underground, Daley went on to appeal to UFC matchmaker Joe Silva for a new opponent, suggesting a couple of names he would like to fight.  “Koshcheck...is a tough motherf*cker, but I accept the challenge. Hazellet has sick subs, and is dangerous, but I accept that fight too. Any top level fighter in 170lbs with a winning record. Joe make it happen.”

[UPDATE] - Dustin Hazelett steps in:
Multiple sources informed MMAWeekly.com on Tuesday that Hazelett will step in for an injured Carlos Condit to face Paul Daley in the co-main event of UFC 108, which takes place Jan. 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

It was Fitch/Almeida at UFC 106, and then Almeida became injured so they nixed Thiago/Thiago and put Fitch against Alves at 107. Alves got injured so Fitch got Pierce.

Both fights are in there by the by except for Thiago/Thiago which wasn’t really a loss.

by John Nash on Dec 9, 2009 12:03 PM EST reply actions

Yeah man.

The UFC has so much depth in every division that they can handle injuries and still put on stacked cards like this. This is what makes them the big leagues. Strikeforce would have to cancel an event if Josh Thompson, Nick Diaz, Joe Riggs, and Erin Toughill all called off the same card!

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 9, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

I guess you missed the sarcasm.

That was a direct reference to Carano vs. Cyborg, all the names mentioned were the ones that pulled off that card for one reason or another. I thought it was still a sick event.

I was pointing out the ridiculous criticism of Strikeforce’s roster saying “Oh, well if anything happens to ONE guy on the card they’re fucked!” or “Yeah, all their names are on this card and they won’t have anything else for 4 months!” and people claiming that the UFC is immune to that problem. This card is about as bad as it will or should ever get in terms of injuries fucking things up and I certainly don’t think it’s indicative of any trend, I just felt the need to point this event out for haters later.

This is possbly the dumbest thing i’ve heard all week, I honestly don’t know what has gotten into mma fans lately. They love to bitch about everything and even when you get a quality mma card like UFC 108, they are too busy being starfuckers to enjoy it. Luckily for the UFC they have plenty of WW’s that can step in like Saunders or Hazelett to make up for Condit being out something no other promotion would even be capable of if 1 or 2 of their so called stars got hurt.

Dude, you can’t throw around phrases like “starfuckers” like starpower has no credence. That dog won’t fetch. This PPV will cost $55 in some places, people want bang for their buck. All these fights can be FotY candidates, won’t matter when Rashad Evans is the only “star” on the card.

Hey no one is forcing you to pay for any UFC ppv, but to deny that there are many good matchups and there could be several great fights on this card is wrong. I honestly don’t know what mma fans want now adays i’ve seen several meh cards this past year get hyped up to no yet somehow UFC 108 isn’t good enough.

That is a bunch of crap i’ll gladly pay 50 bucks for a card stacked with great fights and lesser name fighters because in the end MMA isn’t about names it’s about fights. And if you can’t get excited about seeing some of this fights maybe you need to go watch another sport, because mma isn’t doing it for you and never will.

by Raker on Dec 9, 2009 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

What they want is some bang for their buck, which is what is supposed to separate mma from boxing. If this card is legitimately worth $50 than Machida vs. Rua can start charging $200. But I think my complaints will fall on death ears, because I would wager to guess that you would argue that a main title match between Stephan Bonnar and Jake O’Brien would be worth $50 as long as the UFC logo was in the middle of the octagon.

You’re right, no one forces me to shill out my money. But PPV really isn’t about great fights as much as it is starpower. Hell, UFNs and TUF Finales have produced plenty of great fights this year, but you don’t see the UFC charging for them. It’s my general thinking that the UFC will be consumed in general because of great fights, but the $50 is for the great spectacles.

Don’t you two get me started on the Stones or we’ll be here all night. Was there ever a band with a better string of albums: Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Finger, and Exile on Main St. back to back, and all within a 4-year span. Amazing. if you want to check out a great film on the Stones at their best, see One Plus One.

I will be buried with my vinyl of Let it Bleed

but we mustn’t forget 12×5, Aftermath, etc…

I thought Shine a Light was great too, would’ve loved for Scorcese to have filmed it in ’72 at the height of their powers (whilst teleporting Jack White back in time, and grabbing Buddy Guy again)

That would have been great but the only movie of Scorsese’s that had been released in 1972 was Boxcar Bertha, so he really wasn’t at the height of his powers. How about we make a compromise and have him film the 1978 Some Girls tour, between the filming of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. That way we can skip New York, New York and it could have been released on a double bill with the Last Waltz.

And who needs Jack White when we could have had Johnny Thunder and Iggy Pop on the stage?

Man, if you want the best stones, there’s a ton of live bootlegs out there. Anything for 69,72, 73, 78 is fucking awesome…

Stephen Quadros: Where do you see yourself in three years.
Quinton Jackson: Let's see, I'm 22 right now. In three years I see myself being 25.

I'm excited to see Daley-Haze

But it should not be the co-main event for a UFC PPV.

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

Well… is it possible that this fight actually got BETTER in the long run? Weird.
