Relentless, eh?

And I was hoping they were done with the silly names.

Agreed. Unfortunately, none of those fights would make a compelling subtitle.

Dana said he hates doing the numbers

but I like them. We’ll never run out of numbers, but we will quickly run out of cool names, leading to hokey crap like this.

Dana, it’s UFC 109. Just go with it.

We’re going to end up with “UFC 135: Scrumtrulescent” at this rate

Exactly

Especially since they’re usually one word titles

I misread the poster as Pointless

but actually this is a really good card, but i don’t know if it will draw much interest. Except for Couture there is no “big name” fighters and his bout with Mark Coleman doesn’t seem to be drawing much heat. But I know its got my interest.

This is how you make fighters into bigger names.

Has to happen somehow…Couture wasn’t born “The Natural” or “Captain America”.

It's what they do when they have no headliner....

And how old does Mark Coleman look? He reminds of franklin the turtle, somehow

by TLow on Dec 8, 2009 12:41 PM EST reply actions

I think this is a great main card. Sure, no title fight, but top contender fights along with a couple fights with UFC legends and former champs.

Given the injury situation, I’ll take this card and be happy.

Did Nogueira not turn down the Vera fight? wtf? It makes no sense at all

I’m still excited to see Nogueira again though. Though I think if he is fighting Vera, that’s kind of the wrong way on the ladder. Still, I guess they want to give him some highlight reel footage…

by TLow on Dec 8, 2009 1:08 PM EST reply actions

Well if Vera wins I’d bet it gets him 1 more fight away from a title shot. I’m sure they felt he won the Couture fight as well, And if Nog wins it’s obvious he’ll become an instant contender next in line for a shot.
That said, Man are they giving Vera tons of love or what? he hasn’t beaten any top contenders since moving to LHW and he’s somehow still at the top fighting contenders after wins over lower level dudes. This is coming from a big Vera fan.

Like a lot of the cards lately, it’s a main event away from being a great card.

As it is, it’ll be a fun night of fights, but it’s missing the “sizzle” at the top.

UFC 109: Geezers

Oddly enough, Lil’ Nog looks like the oldest one on the poster. WTF?

The people who make UFC posters need to be fired. Sometimes I wonder if they deliberately select the least flattering photos.

by zeke21 on Dec 8, 2009 1:29 PM EST reply actions

i'm actually interested in Trigg-Serra

I hope they start yapping at each other.

If Trigg loses to Serra, he will go down as one of those great “what might have been” fighters, along with Stephan Bonner among others

by mason_beer on Dec 8, 2009 1:31 PM EST reply actions

Any one else notice that the UFC is starting to get better at keeping secrets?

We only get wind of them offering it to lil nog, then initially not being interested. We don’t hear about verbal agreements, or officially signing, or whatever, then it gets announced in UFC.com with a poster… And that’s not only for the Vera fight, a lot of other fights become official before any of us get wind of it..

I think it has to do with them talking to everyone at the fighter summit.

by Anton Tabuena on Dec 8, 2009 2:00 PM EST reply actions

And yes,

This is going to be a reallyyyyyyy hard fight for Vera to win. And it’s really surprising that they made this fight.

by Anton Tabuena on Dec 8, 2009 2:01 PM EST reply actions

And Vera takes another loss

There’s nothing wrong with a tune-up fight, Vera should go in there, lick someone’s head off, and then get back to upper level fighters.

by Shaun32887 on Dec 8, 2009 2:06 PM EST reply actions

Agreed.

I like Vera and hate this fight. He should be fighting Luiz Cane, not Lil Nog. Not to mention that they’ve shared a lot of gym time recently at Alliance.

by pdl on Dec 8, 2009 4:48 PM EST up reply actions

Good lord almighty is that an abomination of a poster. Not only is the color scheme hideous, but the layout is just ripped straight off from the UFC 100 poster. Are they really that short on ideas? Who the hell designs these things?

by JRN on Dec 8, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Did you see the UFC 108 poster?

This looks like a masterpiece compared to that poster.

although he may be the first TUF champ to get the axe if he can’t get past Buchholz.

by Scott Haber on Dec 8, 2009 2:17 PM EST reply actions

True

but I’m thinking of the true rookie TUF seasons, not the “comeback” season.

by Scott Haber on Dec 8, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

WTF?

I don’t wanna see Lil Nog vs. Vera! That is the LAST person I would like to see Lil Nog matched up against. Vera just came off a loss and Lil Nog a very impressive win. WTH?

by MSEMCEE on Dec 8, 2009 2:21 PM EST reply actions

Maia gets the Thales Leites treatment

he loses what was supposed to be a number one-contender fight with Marquardt, and now he’s on the prelims.

Meanwhile, Thiago Silva and Brandon Vera lose their last fights and they end up in featured bouts.

by Scott Haber on Dec 8, 2009 2:26 PM EST reply actions

Thiago Silva won his last fight, and is fighting a UFC star and former champ.

Vera headlined his last fight, very arguably won, and is fighting a guy who is close to a title shot.

Maia gets a good fight, but it just falls a bit short of main card. I’m sure they’ll show his fight if they have time on the PPV, or maybe one of the free prelim fights on SPIKE

by Hardcharger on Dec 8, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

oh wait, nevermind. Both Silvas mauled Jardine. Haha. He should fight Anderson next.

by mburtoni on Dec 8, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

posting fail.

i hope they don’t expect to charge normal price for this shitty card.

I don’t care about 50 year olds fighting, a ww title contender getting revenge, sonnen running around jabbing for 3 rounds, and a battle for irrelevance between two has been WWs.

The only match up that is going to be good is the little Nog one… but we all know Vera is going to find some way to make it boring.

by virginiatech on Dec 8, 2009 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

Awful, awful card due to awful, awful matchmaking.

Randy Couture vs. Mark Coleman
-A non-compelling fight that was made purely for the name value of both fighters.

Josh Koscheck vs. Paulo Thiago
-No one cares about this fight except Koscheck.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Brandon Vera
-Lil Nog is exciting but Vera will ensure that this fight will be a snoozer. And I can’t wait to hear about how we’re going to see a “new Brandon Vera” in this fight during the lead-up.

Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen
- A stay-busy fight for both fighters. Marquardt should be fighting Belfort for the #1 contender spot. Marquardt should take this, but if he doesn’t, I doubt they’ll give Sonnen a title shot. Either way, this fight does not excite me at all.

Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg
-2 welterweight relics fighting for relavency and a chance to prolong their UFC careers for another fight or 2.

Put this on Spike.

by mburtoni on Dec 8, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

1. Correct
2. Correct
3. Semi-Correct, probably won’t be a snoozer.

5. Correct

This card has good fighters, but not good matchups.

by Rusty Trombone on Dec 8, 2009 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

But I am correct in predicting that Vera will insist that “you are going to see a different Brandon Vera in the cage this time, that’s for sure.”

by mburtoni on Dec 8, 2009 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

Lil Nog vs Vera and Marquardt vs Sonen could be surprising. Marquardt will threaten the wrestler with submissions and Vera might want to finish a fight coming of a disappointing decision.
I think we’re going to see a totally new Vera this time. Haha.

No way Vera finishes Lil Nog. Lil Nog has only been stopped once (KO by Sokoudjou.) Vera will not be the guy to stop him for the 2nd time.

I was wondering what happened to Danzig. This is a MUST win for him or it’s off to Strikeforce!

by poundnground on Dec 8, 2009 2:56 PM EST reply actions

Vera vs Nog makes perfect sense. Vera had a close loss to Couture. If he cant beat a top tier guy he needs to sit in the undercards. This is where we will see if Veras killer instinct awakes. And for Lil Nog he fights a second dangerous striker in a row in a division topped by two devastating strikers. (Machida, Rua)

by AintNoSunshine on Dec 8, 2009 3:02 PM EST reply actions

I'm tired of waiting for Vera's killer instinct to awaken

I’m glad he’s fighting Lil’ Nog, who I hope finishes him. I say continue to feed him to up and comers. Give him Jon Jones next.

by Scott Haber on Dec 8, 2009 8:40 PM EST up reply actions

I really didn't want Nog-Vera to happen

The win does nothing for Lil Nog but give him a warm body to beat up while the title picture clears itself up, and if Vera wins (which he can) then Nog falls waaaay back.

Definition of a stay-busy fight, IMO.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

It is a clash of two UFC Hall of Famers. Two guys no has argued about being in the hall of fame. I think this is a very reasonable headliner for a UFC card.
