My Thoughts on Liddell and Ortiz as next season's Ultimate Fighter Coaches .
I would first like to say I am a little mixed on next season's coaches. I like that they did not lock down a champion or stick anyone relevant as the coaches. Besides the Lightweight division, the other divisions are in need of contenders. I don't want to see two title contenders tied up for 6 months. I like the fact they used fighters with star power with no relevance to the title.
I hate that its Liddell and Ortiz. Its a lose/ lose situation. Liddell beat Ortiz twice. I don't understand why a third fight is neccesary. Silva vs Jackson III was sold on the premise that Jackson is different since his pride days. Jackson improved his boxing greatly since Pride and the third fight proved it. What has Ortiz improved since his last fight with Liddell ? His excuses !! (My skull was cracked and back isn't fully healed and Forrest steped on my toes. boo hoo !!!) Ortiz isn't the same fighter he was 3 years a go.
Age and injuries have caused Liddell and Ortiz to slow down and become old shell of their former selves. What are the positives of this match up. If Liddell wins, its against a man he has beaten twice already and doesn't help at all for his legacy. If Ortiz loses again, then he should retire. If Ortiz can't beat Liddell now, then he can't win against half Light-Heavyweight Division.
If Ortiz wins the win is irrelevant becasue he has beaten a fighter that hasn't been relevant in over a year. Ortiz would get to avenge lost and could launch another "I'm coming for my title" campaign. Liddell suffering another lose would make three in a row. It would be a hard argument to make for Liddell to keep on fighting. This fight has the "Loser Goes Home" tag written all over it
I can't understand why Dana would make this match up. He is going to lose a star power draw at the coaches fight for what ... More Spike TV ratings. Ortiz and Liddell are legends of the sport and should go out with a bang, but not like this. I would like to tip my hat to both Ortiz and Liddell for all the fireworks and great fights they had. I will miss watching you guys come into the Octagon because after you guys fight for the last time. One of you won't be coming back.

I basically agree that Chuck/Tito is a meaningless fight, but the only purpose of the Ultimate Fighter is to introduce fans to the sport and get new fighters coming into the UFC some recognition and a bit of a fanbase to start with. Otherwise, the show is meaningless as well. So Chuck/Tito doesn’t bother me, though it doesn’t interest me as a fight either. The conceit that the coaches have to have this big fight as the payoff, isn’t worth holding up relevant fighters, so I hope they continue with older “legends” as the coaches. Guys getting ready to move on from fighting, with tons of experience behind them, seem more likely to make good coaches than a fighter in the hunt for a title shot anyway.

i accept this fight as a “senior circuit” fight. so long as it doesnt headline a PPV, its a fight i will be entertained while watching, and thats good enough for me. the guys who used to get paid nothing, need fights like this so they can retire. (and i know liddell and tito are both plenty rich, but i think maybe it can start a precedent for the “Senior circuit” in ufc)

I agree with this.
With this fight between Chuck and Tito what about putting it as the headliner for the TUF Finale?
Just BE.

I'm fine with it 'headlining,'
as long as there’s a title up on the same card. That actually seems the best way to use these types of guys late in their careers. Piggyback interest in their Grudge Match or whatever onto something legitimate for a guy like Machida or Anderson.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

if there's a title fight on the same card,
the title fight headlines the card automatically.
…also, it’s not automatic that TUF coaches will fight as headliners.. bisping vs hendo and Serra vs Hughes didn’t.. granted UFC 100 was a milestone card, and serra hughes was delayed, but still, a good headliner or a title fight could make this a strong co-headliner for a quality card.

It’ll be good to see Chuck back…. but yeah, not interested in Chuck vs. Ortiz 3.

I have the same view,
I’m okay with seeing it, but not really excited about the matchup.. It’s just more of wanting to see Chuck back..
I would’ve wanted Chuck vs Wanderlei as coaches better, but he’s already set on dropping to MW so….

I think it's a good idea
If they’re going to tie two guys up for eight months, I’m glad it’s these two. It’ll be some good TV and Tito will reinvigorate some of his past fandom by being a good coach (which he undoubtedly was on his season with Shamrock). Maybe the fight doesn’t mean much, but not every fight has to mean the world. They’ll make it interesting.

Lol
I feel you bro silva is supposed to fight early next year I think. And as far as this upcoming ultimate fighter I’m not impressed they need different coaches.

But Tito already won the airplane rubber match!
by MMAInFeRioRiTy on Dec 7, 2009 1:52 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Well, not a rubber match. That would require that Tito win once.

Tito and Chuck are perfect because they are big names. At the same time, their temporary absence from the division won’t hold up any important fights.

I really don’t have a concern on coaches because I never watch TUF. This move should be more concerning about the UFC, for all their success they are still suck with Liddell vs Ortiz to sell the promotion 4 years later.
