Frankie Edgar: "I was willing to let him pop my knee out"
via assets.heavy.com
There's tough, and then there is Frankie Edgar tough. Heavy.com had the chance to sit down with Edgar (I was sitting down at least. He was in Vegas doing God knows what) and talk about his fight and his mindset the day before weigh ins. We had tons of great stuff about how he keeps his mind right before he fights and what the future holds at 155.
But that's not what stood out to me.
It was this passage, showing the will of the warrior, that made me realize Frankie Edgar is as tough as they come.
Heavy.com: Can you talk a little about your mental toughness? I was so impressed in your very first fight in the Octagon where you refused to lose to Tyson Griffin. Did tapping cross your mind?
Frankie Edgar: I didn't think about it then. I felt I was up on the judge's scorecards and knew there wasn't a lot of time left. That isn't to say I would never tap, but I was willing to let him pop my knee out, to give that up, to get the "W."
Heavy.com: But in the right situation, with three minutes to go in a round and you're stuck in an armbar-you would tap? Only Renzo Gracie is crazy enough to never tap.
Frankie Edgar: (Laughs) I don't know man. Right now I can say yes. For sure I would. But in the middle of a fight with all the adrenaline? I'm a pretty competitive person. I guess we'd have to find out. Hopefully we never will.

Frank Edgar
First of all, do me a favor. Whenever you talk to him next, ask if he prefers “Frank” or “Frankie.” It’s tough for me to believe that a grown man, who is a cage fighter, no less, prefers “Frankie” to “Frank.”
Second of all, how can anyone not like Frank Edgar? I actually saw someone once say that “Gray Maynard is going to derail the Frankie Edgar hype train!” Hype? Are you kidding me?
Edgar’s lost just the one fight to Gray Maynard. His wins include:
Deividas Taurosevicius
Jim Miller
Tyson Griffin
Mark Bocek
Spencer Fisher
Hermes Franca
Sean Sherk
There are very few fighters with that kind of resume, and that’s not limited to lightweight fighters.

Yeah, but his wikipedia page says “Frank.” Who are you to doubt Wikipedia?

Just out of curiosity
how many times do you think Rogan said “Tremendous” on the TUF 10 Finale broadcast? I’m betting on upwards of a dozen

More or less than Goldberg said “COMING UP NEXT!”

Goldy:
“Coming up next in the ____ division!”
Rogan: “Jon Jones is a tremendous fighter. He really performed tremendously against a tremendous wrestler and fighter in Matt Hammil, dominating him in tremendous fashion, with his tremendous Greco- Roman skills, tremendous reach, tremendous athleticism, and tremendously creative striking.”

Although immediately underneath of that on his banner was “Frankie ‘The Answer’ Edgar.”
I think the answer (no pun intended) is that he’s cool with either one. I’ll stick with Frank.

I almost cried when he beat Sherk, because I absolutely love Sean Sherk. But it made me an Edgar fan, because Sherk is a notoriously tough out. Sure, maybe he didn’t fight his fight, but Edgar did what he had to do and that’s all you can say. Too bad for how he looked in that Maynard fight. I’m sure he wants that one back some day.

Holy crap! You’re only the third person I know that likes Sean Sherk, and I’m one of the other ones.

I wont add to the football talk
but, given my name, I felt it necessary to add myself to this chain of comments.

Hey Blackout and other Vikings fans...
…I must have fallen asleep, who won the Cards-Vikings game anyway??…“in way over their heads”…..All Day is still trying to find some daylight……can’t believe I’ll be going to the Super Bowl again this year…
Met Frankie Edgar twice and he is very down to Earth humble guy…..he should get the next title shot if Maynard loses to Nate Diaz.

There’s little chance they lose that game.

Who rec'd this??
I’ve met him many times (nicest guy), he used to train at the same gym as my brother and I’ve seen him fight live a handful of times. Plus, he’s an amazing fighter. So there’s that.

I hail from
atlantic city… It’s not uncommon that guys around here use names like frankie. I guess it doesn’t sound weird to me because I grew up around it.
The fact that Edgar didn’t tap out to that kneebar is the only thing I didn’t like about his fight with Griffin.
C’mon, a come-from-behind rolling kneebar victory in the waning seconds of the last round? That would have been the greatest thing ever.
Well
as much as I like Griffin, it’s 100% his fault that he didn’t finish that kneebar. With how deep he had it, he should’ve been able to literally snap Edgar’s leg like a twig, the kinds of things someone like Kitaoka or Imanari would’ve done with that position are frightening.
If you watch it, Tyson tries to use brute strength to put pressure on the knee, as opposed to fully extending his body and really stretching it out. When we went over leglocks for a month @ XC, the jiu jitsu coach (neil melanson) demonstrated his kneebar for the class on yours truly, and he literally put no pressure on it, but just from being in the position I felt a tremendous amount of pressure on my knee. If he had cranked it, I have no doubt in my mind that I would be in a boot right now

Neil Melanson is like 250 pounds though!

It's true, he's a freaking beast
but that’s not the point. The point is, if Tyson actually knew how to execute that kneebar, he would’ve either tapped Frankie or snapped his leg in half, no 2 ways about it. If I remember correctly, Edgar was limping afterwards, but still- Griffin had a good minute or so to finish that kneebar
