Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson Coming Back to the UFC

Mvkjs1_medium

Promoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Luke Thomas.

Michael Rome already mentioned his return, and now Rampage himself confirms it on his blog (Registration Required):

Now, I wanted to let my fans know that I'm going to come back to the UFC & finish my contract. Not because the haters are talking shit about me being scared of Rashad or Titties or anybody else. I'm coming back for my fans & to shut Rashad's mouth up & shut Dana's mouth up. Then after that I'm going back to doing movies & I might do a boxing match once a year just to stay in shape. Hate on dis!

Seems like he's still pissed at Dana, but will still have to honor his contract with the UFC. Even if Rampage still decides to do movies after, hopefully he patches things up with the UFC brass in time to negotiate a new deal. He said that he can still do movies and fight a few times, and I'm sure his fans would rather see him do that in the UFC.

Rome says the fight could happen around Memorial Day, and while it would be a few months delayed, Rampage vs Rashad would still be a huge fight that will get people interested.

Glad to hear we’ll see Page vs. Shad.

If Evans loses to Thiago Silva, some, (just some) of the appeal for an Evans vs Rampage fight will be lessened. I bet that the UFC is hoping that Evans wins his fight.

I know I am

I don’t like Thiago Silva

so the fight between Rashad and Thiago will be cancelled….. i hope Vera will replace him to fight Thiago…

It will probably happen after. Rome says Memorial day, so that’s months May right? they won’t shelve Rashad for that long. haha.

if thiago loses to rashad, then maybe they can match him up to Vera. :)

probably, yeah it could happen..

the UFC must be hoping that Rashad doesn’t lose, so Rampage vs Rashad wouldn’t lose that much steam.

by Anton Tabuena on Dec 4, 2009 4:05 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I’m sure hoping Rashad wins. The match will still have a lot of heat if he doesn’t win but if he does that’ll give us a #1 contender match.

by ufc4 on Dec 4, 2009 8:27 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Rashad better win because I don’t want to see the heat get sucked out of this fight. I guess Rampage got his bread and/or decided his acting skillz weren’t going to keep paying the bills – damn him for screwing up the timing of this one…Memphis woulda been white hot.

The producers told him “we hired you because you’re a UFC fighter not because of your acting skills. Now go back and fight so we can promote you in the new movie!”

I hope that happens

if Shad loses to Thiago that will take away a lot of interest in a Page vs Suga fight. Maybe they can give Thiago Vera or even Lil’ Nog, probably Vera though if it’s to stay the main event for 108 (but 108 would still be lacking name power to pull out a big number of sales).

maybe...

as much as I appreciate Rampage, his mentality has been suspect for a long time. So long as he beats Rashad, he can do whatever he wants. Rampage by violent KO in Round 1.

by Ryjo on Dec 4, 2009 4:33 AM EST up reply actions

I think the fight with Forrest showed how he could be mentally broken by another fighter, and I think we’ve seen Rashad do just that in this season of TUF. Add in that Rashad has more finishing ability than Forrest, and I don’t like Rampage’s chances against Rashad.

by Hardcase on Dec 4, 2009 7:57 AM EST up reply actions

How was Rampage mentally broken by Forrest? That was a razor thin decision after Forrest damaged his leg early in the fight. If he was mentally broken he would have just packed it up after that damaging kick, instead he fought through it and damn near won thr fight.

by ufc4 on Dec 4, 2009 8:30 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Agree he wasn't mentally broken

But I’m pretty sure he didn’t train as hard for that fight because he didn’t think Forrest was on his level. That’s the problem I think; if he looks at Rashad as just some scrub, he’ll take a loss, but if he puts in the training he could take this via superior boxing. I’m really hoping for the latter.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Dec 4, 2009 8:39 AM EST up reply actions

If he’s talking about what happened after the fact then I see the point, I thought he meant during the fight which was in the context of what we were talking about.

by ufc4 on Dec 4, 2009 9:22 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Which is still probably valid.

I think Forrest’s style frustrated and wore down Rampage mentally.

by Razreshat on Dec 4, 2009 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

Frustrated and mentally broken are two completely different things. Rampage lost a very close decision on a badly injured leg, if he wasn’t thinking right he woulda just given up and the fight wouldn’t have been nearly as close.

I was seeing him nervous like crazy in the walk in to the cage , where a poker face is irrelevant since his opponent is not watching (reminded me of the same look Rich had when silva KO’d Nate the great). but hey, if you say he has the same look in every fight and this one is no exception, don’t let me stop ya (but do see an eye doctor just to be sure :P)

Sooooo thirteen days after the Memorial Day show which would be Sat, May 29th. Press screenings and advance showings reviews may point to whether or not this film is a turkey and thus spur Quinton’s decision.

The real question is – would Dana offer Quinton a new contract after being screwed over as badly as he has been?

He won’t do it out of spite, he has said many times that it’s all about the money, SF won’t be able to afford him.

by Phildo on Dec 4, 2009 8:45 AM EST up reply actions

I could see him going to Strikeforce but only if is film career “kind of takes off”. He could then turn into a LHW version of Cung Le, using the occasional fight against a cherry picked fighter to help promote himself and whatever project he has coming out. he makes a little extra money, stays in the limelight with guaranteed CBS cards.
If his career in acting really takes off or tanks then SF is definitely off the table.

by nottheface on Dec 4, 2009 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

Rampage doing movies is honestly very good for the UFC. The only problem was the timing and how this particular movie went down was the cause of all the problems.

When they sign a contract extension, they will make sure to take Rampage’s acting career into account and get a lot more shit in writing.

by Phildo on Dec 4, 2009 8:47 AM EST up reply actions

Is it really a question....

if the A-Team movie bombs? Other than “Mission Impossible” I am hard pressed to think of a remake of an 80’s show that worked…that wasn’t a parody of the original show.

I just don’t see how Rampage could market himself as a movie star in the US.

A lot of MMA fighters have roles in movies

And it doesn’t really effect their training/fight schedule. Look at Jardine, he’s in a shit-ton of movies and fights pretty regularly. I think Quinton is gonna have a rude awakening when he realizes people will only want him for small supporting roles as “big, mean black guy” and not as a co-star or star.

Get help. Finish his contract. Then decide what to do after that.

Unless Quinton learns to get his head in check, he’ll end up either dry humping the wrong woman or starting a fight he can’t justify. The ‘Rampage’ character has its limits and I’m not 100% convinced Quinton knows those.

and frankly, I feel they were a bit justified give how Rampage timed this out.

I find it quite amazing that Rampage is still mad at Dana give the fact that it was Dana standing by him after his driving rampage that kept his image alive and probably saved any chance he had of getting the movie role and any other success that roles his way.

I think he’s been in like 3 movies already, not much text, but he still can tell people he is a fighter AND an actor. And the inability to act properly doesn’t disqualify you automatically in the profession, see: Ben Affleck, Steven Seagal etc..

Watch Hollywoodland, Affleck is quite good in it. His directorial debut was excellent as well.

This is the first mainstream film Jackson has done. He is making a fairly low amount (part of why others passed on the role) and thinks that he is going to be a big star.

Seagal made a living with those films, but was not making a ton of money. Even with being a producer on almost all of his films, only a few made him seven figures right off the bat.

I agree.

You may not like Vin Diesel (have to admit I’m jealous that he cam up with that name first), which is fine and somewhat defensible. But putting his acting ability in the same conversation with Rampage’s displayed acting ability is about as fair as saying Vin’s fighting skills (in reality, not movies) are comparable to Pages.

by Razreshat on Dec 4, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

actually… i never compared either of those things if you read what i posted. i simply said that vin diesel is mediocre actor, who continues to get work, and that the same could happen for rampage. that doesn’t imply that rampage is as “talented” as him, or have anything to do with fighting.

but obviously i’m stepping on some toes here. whodathunkit.

by woooburn on Dec 4, 2009 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

Nonsense. I promise you he is not getting seven figure offers, regardless of what he is saying. Right now, very little money is being thrown around in Hollywood. All of the studios are tightening the belts and cutting costs.

Six or seven years ago, studios would greenlight b grade crap for 40 or 50 million. That is not the case anymore.

Diesel got money because he had several hits right off the bat: Pitch Black did ok, Fast/Furious did well as did XXX. Back to back 100 million dollar films will open the wallets. Of late, his paydays are not what they once were. Dwayne Johnson got a ton of money as he was seen as an action star, but after a few bombs, the offers became more modest and he has focused on family fare that has done well.

I can see Jackson doing support work in b films, ala Le, but not mainstream stuff. Listen to him on TUF, he is not an eloquent speaker. Mr. T was a pop culture star after Rocky III, but his film career disappeared pretty fast because he could only play Mr. T. Glad to see Rampage is back.

Mentally I’m not sure he’s all there, but when he trains hard he’s a hell of a fighter. Hopefully he puts some hours in for Rashad because if he shows up in shape he could easily knock Rashad out.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

He's going to shut Dana up??

Well, Dana gave Tito a fight with Lyoto Machida for talking crap, I’m guessing Dana gives Rampage Anderson Silva.

by Razzel on Dec 4, 2009 8:19 AM EST reply actions

I could see that happening after the Rashad fight, regardless of outcome.

I don’t think Dana wants to push him too close to a title shot with the way he keeps talking about leaving to make movies. Dana will probably try to send him out on a loss.

That being said, I think Silva/Rampage would be a GREAT fight. I’d love to see it.

As far as I interpreted the post BJ said – he saw right through the bluster and gamesmanship (of the “I’m done fighting, I’m making movies…it’s all about respect and providing for my family”), to which I noted – no one other than the markiest of marks believed it for a second and knew he would be back once he (a) cooled his jets, (b) finished the movie and © realized he’s not going to be an action movie star in this lifetime.

Awesome for Rome and kudos for scooping that he’s indeed on his way back (not a big surprise) around Memorial Day (there’s the value add).

by The_Gaijin on Dec 4, 2009 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

1) He’s not coming back soon, Memorial day is what, 6 months away?
2) As I recall Rome said they were talking or in negotiations, not that they would come to an agreement soon.

Also

Just about everyone said “blah blah he’ll be back”. Not to take anything away from Rome, but everyone saw this coming :)

Right

I mean if we took a poll yesterday of “Will Rampage be back in the UFC in 2010?” there would have been about 85% yes votes.

by ufc4 on Dec 4, 2009 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

so what if everyone knew that he was coming back?

no one actually reported it..they just assumed it would happen sooner or later. It’s not like Rome made a random prediction like that poll your suggesting.. He said they were in negotiations for a return around Memorial Day..

The guy has connections to Rampage’s camp if you guys have forgotten.. It’s not like he just predicted it like the 85% would have done.

And what the hell does 6 months have to do with anything? If the person reported signing Fedor, but they’re talking about a fight 6 months from now, because Brock is still injured, does it make it any less true? does the report make it any less factual? does it make it like a random prediction that all you experts know will happen?

by Anton Tabuena on Dec 4, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

so what if everyone knew that he was coming back? no one actually reported it..

And neither did Rome, all he said was they were in negotiations as you will recall. I don’t know what you’re gettting so excited about, maybe you need to go back and read the article again to see what was actually said.

by ufc4 on Dec 4, 2009 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

So Rome says he is in negotiations..

and he was right..

that’s different from what you’re trying to point out.. that everybody “knew” that it will happen eventually.. There’s saying he will go back at a certain date, and there’s assuming/guessing he will back eventually.. It’s really simple to know the difference between the two..

This fight will definately be huge if it happens

I’ve had a lot of friends who casually watched the show that aren’t big mma friends ask me when the rampage/ rashad fight is happening, only for me to have to tell them that rampage “retired.” I think the show definately did a good job of building a lot of hype for this fight.

Is it just me though, or did rampage get the better of every shittalking incident that happened on the show? I thought he was gonna knock rashads head off in the finale, that would’ve been amazing.

Rampage definitely won the battle of words, now it’s time to see if he can back it up. Talk the talk, walk the walk, Shad in my view came out of TUF looking like the bigger man that walks out of confrontations, and Rampage looked like a dick for starting most of them. I’m still a bigger Page fan than Shad’s, so I hope they cancel the Rashad/Thiago fight to put this one back on track untouched.

It’s definitely light years better WITH him, especially given the injuries or propensity for injuries to crop up in the future at the rate they’re going.

Seriously, people need to lay off the crutch of defending how compelling a fight is based on a “ranking”. No one wanted to see the fight (the proof is in the buyrate), it was fine as a fight in and of itself, but was terrible in terms of being a main event. Tito is not, imho, an elite fighter anymore and lay off or no lay off, he’s not a relevant fighter in the LHW title picture.

by The_Gaijin on Dec 4, 2009 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

People enjoyed it. The rankings are usually how we determine how meaningful a fight is. If we’re going to go by PPV buys, it’s more relevant than any time Fedor fought on PPV.

I would bet the threat of legal action on Zuffa’s part was the greatest motivator for Rampage’s “triumphant” return and I think a lot less hardcore fans aren’t excited for it as they would before the beginning of TUF 10 given the PR sh!t storm caused by how badly Jackson looked on screen.

not publicly, but dana did make a few “you don’t wanna get on my bad side” comments, that alluded to something like that (being a possibility). and given what happened with randy, i think it’s safe to say it was bound to happen eventually, if it hadn’t already.

by woooburn on Dec 4, 2009 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

I guess

but I took that as Dana literally saying that Page doesn’t want to be his enemy, since Dana puts on a war against anyone on his bad side. In this case, to me at least, it meant future litigations regarding his contract and perhaps locking it so he wouldn’t be able to fight anywhere else, etc, if he wanted to. but not to the current situation where Page decided to skip the fight with Shad and do the movie instead. Maybe that’s the reason Rampage also wants to finish his fights in the UFC and be free of any future problems with the organization?

by woooburn on Dec 4, 2009 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

Randy tried to resign from the UFC 2 years ago in a manner not wholly unlike Rampage, expressing his dissatisfaction with his contract and pay. He was sued by Zuffa and tied up in litigation for over a year and a half. Rampage would probably facing the same problem eventually if he didn’t complete his contract.

by KahilBS_Marshal on Dec 4, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

They are really apples and oranges. Randy had a contract and wanted to leave the UFC to fight for another promotion. Rampage on the other hand, was leaving to act in a movie. Dana was right in suing Randy, he would not be right if he pursued a lawsuit against Page though (unless Page all of the sudden would be trying to fight for another promotion).

cagar é uma filosofia profunda...

by orcus on Dec 4, 2009 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

Actually

they are not apples and oranges at all. Both are cases of breach of contract, and both can be pursued in a court of law. Whether or not you perceive one as better than the other.

And the UFC likely would have won any breach of contract case they put before the courts concerning Rampage, which is why it is the likely reason he’s coming back.

by AdR23 on Dec 4, 2009 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

Wrong

Rampage retiring is not a breach of contract, he can retire anytime he wants as long as he doesn’t fight again. Randy going to fight elsewhere with fights still on his UFC deal is a clear breach.
