Better Not Pout: MMA Wishlist for 2010
It's that time of year again. Mom's calling you off the hook, badgering you to get your Christmas list to Grandma if you want anything worthwhile. And while Grandma can't put together that cross-promotional superfight, we can still pray to the MMA Gods here on Bloody Elbow.
Without further adieu, my top 5 wants for 2010:
1. Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brock Lesnar - This isn't as far off as it might seem at first glance. Emelianenko's contract with Strikeforce (and the management aspect of M-1) only lasts two more fights, making a 2010 year-end UFC supershow feasible, if unlikely. While the fight doesn't need any additional hype, the sheer amount of angles that one could take is astounding. You've got Pride vs. UFC. Russia vs. America. Size and strength vs. technique and experience. Brash confidence vs. humble stoicism. NCAA wrestling vs. Russian Sambo. It may not be Mayweather/Pacquiao, but it's the closest MMA can come for some time.
2. WEC integration into the UFC - In the main event of WEC 44, Mike Brown and Jose Aldo, two of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet, made a combined $41,000. Three days later, meddling midcard middleweight Kendall Grove made $44,000 fighting a prelim fight at UFC 106. The only thing standing in the way of big paydays for Brown and Aldo is a TV deal and a three lettered acronym. It's time to put the facade to rest.
3. The end of the Ultimate Fighter - I'll admit that I was psyched for this past season of TUF. Kimbo, Roy Nelson, and a bunch of million dollar athletes in the house. What more could we ask for? Well, conditioning for one. Less Kimblotation for another. By the end of the season, I was watching more or less out of habit. You can only polish a turd so much. The show will never create megastars like Forrest Griffin and Diego Sanchez again. Instead, it 1) provides cheap ratings for Spike and 2) allows the UFC to showcase a couple of fighters it planned on bringing in. Just cut out the middle man, sign the fighters you want, and put more fight cards on Spike.
4. Regulation in 50 states - In 2000, New Jersey became the first state to regulate the sport of mixed martial arts. Ten years later, not only has the entire country failed to jump on board, but New York, home of Madison Square Garden, has still yet to recognize the sport. Politicians have never been the vanguard of forward thinking, but they need to realize this: MMA isn't going anywhere. It's not the fringe outlaw sport it was at the turn of the millennium. It's a legitimate athletic endeavor covered from ESPN to the New York Times. A refusal to regulate only hurts the participants, who must rely on the local promoter to get paid timely (if at all) and provide proper medical support.
5. A cure for staph infection - I hope someone cooks up a cure if only so I don't have to look at pictures of stab wounds in Kevin Randleman's ribs or a baby alien growing out of "Mayhem" Miller's neck. Maybe I really should be wishing that gyms start investing in some bleach to clean up their mats, I don't know, all the time? Whatever the case, I hope the disease goes away once and for all.
Let's see your lists in the comments.

Well, you are going to be very disappointed bc all of those have about a 0.0% chance of happening

There’s a 0.0% chance of the WEC’s top fighters being integrated into the UFC? I can’t see that having anything less than a 30% chance!

Unless Comcast/NBC cut the WEC deal… it ain’t happening. And I’m sure they’ll want to keep MMA around.

People sign contracts so that things aren’t cut on a whim. I fail to understand why so many people here want to put the vast majority of these smaller fighters out of work….
by Jonathan Snowden on Dec 4, 2009 2:30 PM EST up reply actions
Out of work?
They’d get absorbed into the UFC. Plus. there are tons of viable options for lower weight class fighters, and they pay well in Japan, especially a lot of the GP fighters. They made more than most of those WEC fighters easily.

The breakdown of this is pretty simple. Right now, every spot on a WEC is filled by a smaller fighter. If they were absorbed by the UFC, most of those slots are gone. You’d see one, maybe two fights per UFC card (Even that would put UFC fighters out of work, because there are limited spaces.)
Right now the WEC has every fighter that matters (with limited exceptions) at 145 and 135. If they merged, they would not be able to keep them all under contract. The options would be slimmer. The great fights they have the luxury of putting on? Gone. Because they wouldn’t have room for all the contracts.
By the way, if Japan pays more, why is every fighter in the world knockign on Sean Shelby’s door?

I have a suggestion for what Zuffa should do with the WEC.
1. Merge FW and BW into the UFC. That would bring 30 or 40 fighters into the UFC.
2. Rebrand the WEC. I don’t know if they legally can, but they should somehow get Ultimate Fighter into it’s name.
3. Bring back MW, WW, LHW, and HW to the new WEC.
3. Make it like Bellator with a 16 man tournament per weight class every year (that’s 105 fights a year right there). This tournament would be made up of novices and UFC veterans they don’t want to cut (think Chris Leben, Kendall Grove, etc) as well as a few legends for name value (Frank Trigg, Phil Baroni).
What benefits are there to this? Well it would keep 20-25 fighters per weight class employed (those in the tourney plus alternates and 1-shot fighters). These fighters would be fairly affordable, and the WEC would benefit because the Mac Danzigs and Chris Leben would probably draw more eyes to the WEC than Mike Brown, Jose Aldo, and Brian Bowles do now. And the tournament format would keep fans interested in the new and lesser known fighters. If Joe Blow beats Stephan Booner to move onto the next round, people will be interested to see what the eventual outcome for this new fighter and the tournament will be. You can use this to introduce new fighters or give new life to old ones, bringing them back to the UFC with some hype as the The Ultimate Fighting WEC Tourney Champ.
Or something like that.

That makes sense, I suppose, but I’d still argue that the UFC should help the lighter weight classes like the FW and BW make more money. Plus, the divisions sell themselves and could eventually be real huge fights for the UFC. It also creates a bigger pool of title fights and could combat against the current situation.
Japan pays more for lighter weight talent because they have been focal points of many of their events. I know for a fact there are a number of Brazilian fighters in the ranks of DREAM and Sengoku making some good money in comparison to the garbage payouts some of the mid-tier guys in the WEC make, and most of the upper ranked guys.

Why are all the top Japanese fighters at 135 pounds coming to the WEC then?
I’m just explaining the Zuffa position, as it was explained to me by the higher ups in the company. They patiently built the UFC and will do the same with the WEC.
by Jonathan Snowden on Dec 4, 2009 3:27 PM EST up reply actions
Mizugaki specifically said he wanted to challenge North American fighters, and there could also be a case made that Japanese fighters would like to experience the media blitz that is going in the United States as well.
There is also an opposite argument as well. Some American fighters have headed overseas to simply “experience” that environment. But ultimately, I think if they became as big as Faber… then they would be making more money. But for a mid-level featherweight, Japan pays a bit more depending on your potential. At the very top, there is no comparison. Zuffa gives the bonuses, the payouts to guys like Faber. And that’s more than what Japan offers, but not at the bottom.

Remember that WEC appearances also include sponsor pay. I agree that at featherweight, Japan has competitive pay for a select few. At bantamweight it is not close.

Bantamweight, you might be right.
If Zuffa is truly wanting to build the WEC… I’m on board if they can hedge this whole Comcast/NBC deal into their favor… especially if NBC wants to start trying to compete with ESPN. The WEC is in the right spot.

WEC has one ppv and after it gets 2 buys this pipe dream is over.
It all comes down to monetization… the most marketable fights and fighters go through hbo regardless of weight class.
WEC cant monetize with PPV – nobody can unless the letters start with UFC. So that leaves TV as the primary revenue generator… You could monetize that with UFC rejects as well as you can with Faber. That’s not the case with UFC ppv’s.
The wec can run for 10 years and it still wont break that barrier.
This market can consume 12 ppv’s a year – It makes more sense to maximize those 12 in terms of increasing the avge buys with solid cards (and the product not being dependent on a handful of fighters) than increasing the ppv shows and at best coming out a wash.
The WEC primarily was developed to fill the holes the UFC creates as this sport grows because most often Zuffa has to sign UFC content/branding away exclusively and there’s always a second bidder who wants in… be it for T V, Video games, etc… and that’s where the WEC comes up instead of opening doors for other competitors.
This can still be achieved the way the WWE does it with smackdown and raw while maximizing revenue and brand dominance (utilizing the right guys for TV and the right guys for PPV).
At the end all the best fighters in every weight class in the world will be in the UFC and the second tier will be in another product under the zuffa umbrella.
Unless the WEC does 200k ppv’s and a significant portion of the buys are coming from non UFC purchasing homes it will be like fighting gravity to stop this.
This was a thought I had as well. WEC is free to fill the void after the UFC enters a deal exclusively somewhere else. It’s different enough to not be compared to the UFC in terms of fights with the exception of the lightweight fighters. Everything else is different weight classes.
I’m interested to see how this Comcast/NBC initiative to go toward more sports programming will allow Zuffa to get some big dollars into the WEC.

I have a post coming on this, but in short, WEC is important in filling a fight void, spreading out risk, and building stars. Its a star vehicle and a way to build divisions. But none of that means they need to be on PPV. They are too valuable a tool to put on PPV.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
Unless the Zuffa brass decides to rebrand the WEC into
“UFC Warriors” or whatever, then the WEC won’t be doing anything in terms of PPV. If I were them, I’d seriously consider something like that. Completely rebrand them to capitalize on the UFC name.
Or perhaps, they could add “The UFC presents: Extreme Cagefighting” or something to that effect. That’s the only way they’d have a chance to be successful in terms of PPV buys.
by timetosaygoodbye on Dec 4, 2009 6:54 PM EST up reply actions
Wait..
I think that says nothing of bringing in a handful of fighters, or having the biggest fights on PPV (Faber/Aldo, Bowles/Torres II), which would also fall under this. Not counting on a full absorption.

Excellent List
I’d like to include:
Good health for UFC (and all) fighters.
Rampage getting over his hollywood pipedream & signing an extension.
Anderson fighting at least four times.
Faber vs Aldo, with the winner facing Brown (in the UFC).
Torres coming back to face Bowles (and smashing his face in).
Mizugaki, Thunder, Sexyama and my other favorite Japanese fighters getting increased respect and exposure in the US, and getting to stick around for the forseeable future.
More Japanese and European fighters signing with US promotions.
TUF to stick around but totally switch gears and get out of Vegas (and the US) and go in search of international talent. It’s there.
Certainly there are more, and these aren’t all as critical as Fagan’s selections, but are important to me nonetheless.

They’re supposed to start that live weekly fight series next year, but considering how little we’ve heard about that, I feel like it might not happen.

International TUF would be epic, or a lower weight class. Which segues into my next want, which is a focus on the featherweight division in the UFC. These guys are killer.
Logic has been saying they’re going to have multiple iterations for different regions, but I don’t want them running concurrently where I’ll have to torrent them from international broadcasts. Just do them internationally and air them everywhere.

Probably something kinda' like this...

This is Rhadi Ferguson, Slice’s cousin.
BJJ Black belt, former olympian and four time national judoka champion.
If only he had decided to fight mma.
Awesome list Mike!
My top 5 for 2010:
1) Injury free 2010
2) UFC in Vancouver
3) TV deal for the UFC
4) Some actual Strikeforce / Dream co-promotion instead of just fighter swapping.
5) One night with Rachelle Leah and for her to marry me. Just kidding. I don’t believe in marriage. :)
I love me some Sexyama!
Fedor vs. Brock and the WEC in the UFC are both definites, so I’ll go with 5 others:
1. A Dream/Sengoku merger or something to save Japanese mma and give us a worthy inheritor of Pride.
2. A fighter challenging the championship clause… and winning.
3. Anderson Silva fighting for the LHW belt and Georges St. Pierre fighting for the MW belt… against Shogun Rua and Dan Henderson.
4. Strikeforce putting on at least 3 or 4 more great CBS cards, so we can have a free alternative.
5. Manny beating Mayweather. I don’t think it’ll happen, but man do I want it to.
As a resident of New York, I am going to put it out there that I do not believe the legislature will get around to this in 2010.
:P
I’m by no means politically active or involved with the daily dealings of the government, but I do live near Albany and every day on the news I hear about how much our state legislature sucks ass and sits on their hands. It’s gotten to the point that Patterson (who’s a fucking imbecile) is trying to push some bill that would give him a one-time power to set the state’s budget for the year.
Here in Vancouver, our city councellors have no problem with passing things, but normally it’s something ridiculous like allowing people to have chickens in their backyard. Nobody wants to take any responsibility for anything serious. Though, MMA looks like a go again for 2010. There were some recent local MMA shows that Councillors went to, and were apparently impressed by.
I love me some Sexyama!
My Wishlist...
Alistair Overeem vs. Fedor Emelianenko, winner takes on Lesnar.
Melvin Manhoef KO’s Robbie Lawler into a coma, somehow can crushes cocky ass Jake Shields, gains UFC berth.. gets his own TUF season, Manhoef vs. TUF cans. Manhoef vs. Mitrione in week 1.

Melvin probably gets clowned by Silva. The reach is way too much unless he just pitbulls through Silva’s punches and somehow lands a haymaker. I love Melvin for the simple fact he will fight whoever.

Well, I’m not making any sort of commentary on who would win the fight, just that I would like to see it. There are very few world-class kickboxers who now participate in MMA that would be a credible threat to Anderson. Melvin has a history of fighting guys significantly larger than him. Of course, his ground skills are nowhere near Anderson but the fight would be very exciting. Certainly more exciting than the chumps he’s been fighting.
Really?
You think that’s arguable? I love to watch Manoef fight, but Anderson would eat his lunch.

Why #3?
Why would you want the show to end? TUF is a great way to get to know fighters in a more personal way, thus making it more interesting to watch them compete later in the UFC. If it wasn’t for TUF, I know for a fact that my GF wouldn’t have become interested in MMA. I bet there are many more like her who were drawn in by the human side coupled with the fighting.
So many people think of MMA as being barbaric and the athletes as being inhuman brutes, until they see them on TUF and realize that they are just (relatively) normal young men. It also helps that they can see that they fight mostly out of competition and not out of hate. Even when they don’t like each other they almost always leave it in the cage and compete like true athletes.
