it’s odd to me that guys like thiago and anderson don’t at least try to speak SOME english in their interviews. seems like there’s always clips of guys in these blogs speaking decent enough english (that they could use to help sell their fights better). certainly worked for kongo/mir.

didnt Silva speak some english in the 102 post fight interview? Same with Dos Santos at 103?

I think a lot of these guys are trying to learn english so they can be more marketable in america and make more money but they also dont want to come off as looking stupid either if they get words wrong.

Hell even Lil Nog had Soares translate what Rogan said to him before answering in english just to make sure he understood everything.

I think your right, i remember last year MMAweekly done a interview with Wanderlei and they mentioned they they had to go back and listen to it before they decided to put it on air too make sure what Wanderlei was saying made sence

yeah, i can definitely understand that, but it seems like they could pull it off for pre-taped things like the countdown show, where they’re in no particular hurry to answer the questions. no big deal… i’m sure they’re pick it up eventually. just seems odd to hear these guys chatting in the blogs, so candidly.

Its also important not to forget accents. Being relaxed, back stage, they probably hear and understand quite well. But when in a press conference, with the mics and accents, and the concern of misunderstanding, I actually think its more professional to rely on your translator.

interesting to see the interaction between dana and cofield. both arguing about the bounderies that mma writers should have when discussing the sport.
