Penn vs. St-Pierre 3 Kicks Off 10 Fights for 2010

Just like everyone else, I make lists around this time of year.

Unlike a whole whack of people, I make lists of fights that I am dying to see in 2010.

instead of writing down countless things I want to change / don't like about myself in hopes that I'll finally decide that junk food sucks and copious amounts of exercise is the key to my existence, I write down ten pairs of fighters who need to stand across the cage from each other in the next 365 days.

Besides, I quit smoking cold turkey in 2009, so in the "Things I Need to Stop Doing" department, I'm good for another year or two.

Kicking off my list of bouts for the coming calendar year is a trilogy fight between BJ Penn and Georges St-Pierre.

Despite every member of Team Penn believing otherwise, records indicate GSP holds a 2-0 advantage on his Hawaiian nemesis, so a third dance wouldn’t even be a rubber match. So then why do it?

Because it would be awesome all over again, that’s why, and sometimes, the best things are the frivolous indulgences that you don’t really need, like new sneakers or another opportunity to watch Georges St-Pierre smash on B.J. Penn.

Besides, two champions meeting in the center of the Octagon is never a bad thing, and you know that the new, somewhat bulked up version of GSP probably wants to put a serious beating on Penn for all the steroid allegations he and his camp have made over the last year.

Nine more of these terrific tandems follow, including appearances by Fedor Emelianenko, Jose Aldo and Shinya Aoki.

Find out who they're paired off with and the rest of the fights I want to see in 2010 by checking out the rest of the piece, and Happy New Year!

I had a “Congratulations on Going 2 Months Without a Smoke” smoke and it was AWESOME… as bad as that sounds.

I like the way you think…

Or:

Go out on the street and bum a smoke off a stranger. As soon as they give you one, rip it in half, throw it on the ground and say: “Thank you sir/mamn, but I’m quitting!”

Awful idea, and completely unfair to Thiago Alves, Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, etc.

Unfair for Penn’s brain health as well, and his fighting future

St.Pierre vs. Penn 3 is a horrible idea unless you want to basically see BJ’s career end.

Penn is 1-3 in welterweight, 0-2 against GSP… explain to me how he deserves to get another free ride into a title shot?

by Monday Morning Martial Artist on Jan 1, 2010 5:38 AM EST reply actions

I'm Not Saying He Deserves a Free Ride...

He should work his way into a title fight and make the move there with some permanence, putting on the added weight properly and building muscle.

If he does that, a third fight with GSP, based on their history and the nonsense that Team Penn has talked in the last couple months would be a major selling point… and the UFC is all about selling big-time fights.

Honestly – I don’t think he deserves another fight, but I’d much rather watch Penn – GSP 3 than BJ Penn beating the hell out of any of the potential “challengers” he could face at 155. Sanchez and Florian were the best possible challengers, and he clobbered them…

by E. Spencer Kyte on Jan 1, 2010 6:20 PM EST reply actions

:(

Penn vs. Alves or Fitch since BJ doesn’t get an insta-shot anyway according to Dana, and since there’s an Anderson Silva precedent for coming up and not fighting the champ.

And if watching GSP beat Penn down is the only reason you want to watch them fight, I’d rather watch GSP fight you. Same entertainment value without tying up two UFC champs at the same time (esp since BJ is the only champ we get to see fight these days).

Also- the Lauzon bros vs. each other? You can probably see that shit on Youtube right now.

by LBo on Jan 2, 2010 1:21 AM EST reply actions

Watching GSP score another beating of BJ isn’t the only reason I want to see a third fight.

I honestly believe that if Penn puts on weight properly, things could be different. He was awful close to winning that first fight, and while GSP has evolved since then, so has BJ. Even in the last year, his strength and conditioning is far different from when he entered the cage to face GSP for a third time.

Lauzon Bros. on YouTube is very different from Lauzon Bros. in the UFC. In the UFC, it sets a precedent and means something, where it’s no different from me fighting my brother if it’s on YouTube.

Good list apart from No 10.

Care to fill me in on what exactly is so horrendous about it, or do you want to leave things at your non-specific, blanket statement of dissatisfaction with my opinions?

by E. Spencer Kyte on Jan 2, 2010 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

well i generally think you’re one of the least insightful people to ever write about mma
but heres to your list

GSP vs BJ if BJ Penn wants to fight at ww fine, then he needs to fight Koscheck, Alves Fitch, hell id even want to see him against Paul Daley, but until he gets 2 quality wins at ww we do not need to see him fight GSP again

- Rashad vs Rampage- we need to see a fight that we are most definitely going to see? really putting yourself out there on this one

- Varner vs Cerrone- i cant for the life of me come up with a scenario outside of injuries where we do not see this fight this year, if varner beats henderson cerrone will get a title shot, if henderson beats varner, varner and cerrone will headline for a title shot again really stepped out with this pick

Aoki vs Kawajiri the only way this fight doesn’t happen is if aoki goes to strikeforce, outside of shady Japanese match making this is really the only fight right now for aoki in dream

Larosa vs Kauffman fight will happen if it doesnt no one will shed tears

- Aldo vs Faber – this fight will happen as long as Faber beats Assuncao

- Fedor vs Barnett- how about Barnett fight someone in the top 10 and win without failing a drug test before he gets to try and fight fedor again, his last win was against Gilbert Yvel about a year ago, that shouldn’t get him a fight with fedor

- Lesnar vs Mir- as long as Lesnar returns this rubber match will take place

- Lauzon vs Lauzon- your an idiot

- GSP vs Silva- silva looks to be able to destroy a majority of the LHW division and you want him to fight a ww, if GSP wants to move up have him fight Vitor, Franklin or Maia, until he wins against someone like that he has no business getting an immediate shot at SIlva

so just to recap out of your 10 fights, 5 are almost definitely happening already, 3 would be stupid matchmaking and 2 really dont matter

by jackmerridew on Jan 3, 2010 3:33 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t like the idea of Barnett vs. Fedor.

If Josh was to win, it wouldn’t mean anything. He had his day…He decided to ruin it and juice. Worst more, he got caught. At least it wasn’t on a post fight test.
