Junior dos Santos vs. Gilbert Yvel Set for UFC 108

According to tatame.com:

Junior dos Santos, boxing coach, Luis Dorea said the Brazilian heavyweight faces former Pride fighter Gilbert Yvel, who comes from an devastating knockout victory over Pedro Rizzo.

"’Cigano’ is a young guy, a great talent", Dorea said. "We know Gilbert is a very strong guy, he like to fight standing, but ‘Cigano’ is better in striking now, we’re doing our job and I know we’re gonna get the victory".

Talk about guaranteed fireworks.

I love this fight.

Also, the picture at the top is probably the most violent thing I’ve seen since I watched Antichrist…

I’ve found myself in the unfortunate circumstances of subjecting myself to The Idiots and Dancer in the Dark. While I found them grating and untruthful, I found the pretentious out-of-touch artsy side that I hadn’t known since college.

Dogville and The Idiots are horrible. I allowed myself to be fooled by Antichrist’s trailer, which is quite intriguing whereas the movie isn’t. Very beautifully shot, but there’s just nothing there.

by Anthony Pace on Dec 3, 2009 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

I wouldn’t write off Yvel. He’s a world-class kickboxer. Dos Santos is good on the feet and has a lot of power. He has a lot more of a puncher’s chance but that said, he’s at a serious disadvantage on the feet.

I’m not sure who I think will win, but it will probably be JDS. But not because he’s a better striker.

We might find out what Cigano’s wrestling and top game look like, because Yvel is useless on the ground. Might be smarter to go in that direction.

I think the rumors of the UFC’s demise were premature. There is no lack of effort from the UFC to make great cards.

And I also don’t think Couture-Coleman will end up as the Main Event at 109, as another article claimed.

The point is (for the Gajjin as well), that the UFC isn’t sitting around, content to give us substandard PPV cards, even though they’ve been beseiged by a rash of injuries and “retirements” to their biggest PPV draws and title holders.

There’s a little time left before UFC 108 and 109, and we’ll probably be surprised at how the UFC finishes off those cards to give fans a quality product.

I guess BE flags and deletes only arguments that people flag and whine about now…why delete one line of posts but leave a factually incorrect post. Intellectually dishonesty in the furtherance of argument is not much better than teasing about facial hair. I’ll admit the immaturity of one, but the existence of the other is no less defensible.

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2008/12/3/678535/gilbert-yvel-vs-josh-barne

I’d love to see Blackout’s response to this…why is it so off base to compare these situations? Must have...it got deleted.

Summary:

It was because it was a “title eliminator” and just not a top 5 fighter fighting Yvel, and hey that could be an exciting fight because Yvel is a dangerous dude. But let’s just ignore the fact that the reaction to the initial announcement is located in ^that link and it says NOTHING about “title eliminator”, “#1 contender” or “winner fights Fedor” and reaction to the fight is located HERE, which is 99% polar opposite. Which was the ENTIRE point. So no need to retread for an entire day, because as you said – “You’ve lost this point.”

Feel free to blackline for inconsistencies.

by The_Gaijin on Dec 4, 2009 1:28 AM EST up reply actions

Like I said, fully admitted it was a lame move to make fun of the facial hair and I apologize. But I am not a fan of attempting to call someone out and try to make them look foolish by recreating an incorrect history and hoping no one will look it up.

by The_Gaijin on Dec 4, 2009 2:07 AM EST up reply actions

I think the stylistic disadvantage between Barnett and Yvel was a significant contributor to the “bitching and moaning” about that fight being made. Everyone knew Barnett would get the takedown and sub Yvel fairly quickly…that didn’t happen but what did happen was still pretty painful to watch.

JDS doesn’t pose the same stylistic problems. No doubt, he is still better than Yvel on the ground but he prefers to strike…something Yvel happens to be good at. So, it is aesthetically pleasing and stylistically favorable for the underdog.

Having said that, JDS via Americana in the 1st.

Also not true. Aleks didn’t pass his physicals before Affliction 1, so before Affliction 2 the alredy knew he can’t fight in US.

Dos Santos vs. Gonzaga was signed and Yvel is a replacment for an injured fighter. In case of Barnett it was Yvel who was his first signed opponent, so it was not a replacement. Atencio was saying how great fight it is since it was announced, never mentioned it was their second option.

I don’t see Santos shooting for takedowns, so I’ll go along with Yvel via KO. We don’t know much about Cigano’s chin though, maybe he just gets battered for three rounds. At any rate, that CroCop fight made me realize that Dos Santos doesn’t really have the speed or boxing prowess to close the distance effectively. His jab isn’t great, and he doesn’t really set up his power punches.

I look at it like the Franklin-Belfort fight in that respect. A lot of people were calling on Franklin to try and take him down, but that just isn’t how Rich fights. Dos Santos is a boxer/muay thai fighter, I don’t see him revamping his approach in order to avoid another striker.

I loved that fight. I was going crazy & my dad kept asking me why I liked the pudgy guy so much. If Matyushenko had a complete killer instinct, he could have finished Pokrajac several times over. He just beat the piss out of him.

He ran off like a fucking six or seven punch combo on Pokrajac’s chin at one point.

I KNOW!!! People talk about him being a boring grappler, but I love watching him fight. Is this undercard?

It had me laughing as hard as the Kerry Vera vs Kim Couture fight, it was so epic.

Almost certainly

But I don’t like Cantwell, so I’d love to see the Janitor mash him up.

Just watched the highlight in the post

And the music made me fire up the roflcopter. The first song is a remix of Linkin Park (haha) and the second is some metal that goes “Fuck the world and all it’s worth” or something like that, idk i won’t recheck the lyrics

Does it seem that

dos Santos is working backwards?

Werdum
Struve
Cro Cop
Yvel

by swells2048 on Dec 3, 2009 5:04 PM EST reply actions

Not exactly backwards—Cro Cop was a step up from Struve. But every one of his post-Werdum opponents has been a step back from Werdum. It’s weird.

by JRN on Dec 3, 2009 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

It’s a replacement fight, too, though. And Yvel is pretty underrated. Just doesn’t have the same implications as the Gonzaga fight would have.

Gonzaga would have been a step back too, since he’s already lost to Werdum.

by JRN on Dec 3, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

Not really the point I was trying to make. Yvel is more of a step back than Gonzaga, but I don’t really believe that you need to progressively fight a better fighter until you run out of earth.

Smash him again? Dude, did you see that fight? It was a heap of ground fighting fail for both guys.

Once the video is over you can scroll through and (re)watch the gem of a video when Gilbert nearly knocks the refs head off.

by Bucky Clark on Dec 3, 2009 5:39 PM EST reply actions

what on earth was going on there? That was confusing. They looked like they were having some kind of touching contest where the ref was touching and the fighters touching and everyone touching, and then walking away from each other, then suddenly Yvel KO’s the ref. Weird.

by Dooda on Dec 3, 2009 6:55 PM EST up reply actions

That’s one of the weirdest videos of all time. Were they having trouble restarting? what the fuck

On the youtube video, it appeared that people thought they were having trouble getting the standing position back, I’m wondering though why it was stopped in the first place? And was Yvel simply not cooperating with the restart? If the ref was his opponents’ trainer, why did the guy just casually walk away after Yvel KO’d him and then soccer kicked him afterwards?

Wasn’t looking to receive the same?

by The_Gaijin on Dec 3, 2009 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

It was stopped because the fighters were about to fall out of the ring. Yvel wasn’t cooperating with the restart, he was refusing to restart from the same position they were before the restart – and boom, decked the ref. Classy.

I actually didn’t know the ref was Atte Backman’s (Yvel’s opponent) coach, but punching the ref is still not kosher. Backman walked away from the ring because the fight was over – and I guess he didn’t feel like trying to deal with a pissed-off madman.

Yvel was really wired up all night after that, his entourage had a hell of a time trying to stop him from doing more stupidities.

I’m going to be taking Yvel here, for reals.

by goodbones on Dec 3, 2009 7:13 PM EST reply actions

I predict a 3 fight win streak for Yvel, first he Knocks out JDS then the winner of Crocop vs Rothwell and finally he decisions Barry.

by TLAoutlaw on Dec 3, 2009 7:37 PM EST reply actions

YES! YES! YES! THANK YOU GOD! THANK YOU UFC!

I am a huge fan of Gilbert “The Hurricane” Yvel, but I am also a huge fan of Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos. I was waiting for the UFC to finally pick up Yvel, and his first fight is against someone that will stand and trade with him. Both of these fighters are killers on their feet, and I can’t actually pick a winner.

by chrisbboy82 on Dec 3, 2009 8:33 PM EST reply actions

didn’t think of this earlier, but i’ll bet mazagatti is gonna ref that fight.. dana probably hoping yvel ko’s maz or at the very least punches his mustache right off.

Great fight.

Yvel is a gun!! 36 wins to his name and not 1 has gone to decision. With more and more UFC fights going to a decision, adding Yvel certainly helps reverse that trend! Great fight!
