Frankie Edgar: "I Can Be a World Champion."

I recently had the opportunity to conduct an exclusive interview with UFC lightweight contender Frankie "The Answer" Edgar for Tapology in order to discuss his upcoming fight with the undefeated H.I.T. squad-product Matt Veach this Saturday night, the meaning of his May victory over Sean Sherk, and how he feels he stacks up against the top dogs in the division, BJ Penn and Diego Sanchez.

On Sherk:

Tapology: Talking about your last two wins; you Fedgar1_mediumdefeated Sherk and Hermes Franca before him. Those two guys are obviously two of the biggest names in the division, so did beating them the way you have change the way you think about yourself as a fighter or give you more confidence in your skills?

Edgar: Yeah, it was great, especially with the win over Sean Sherk. Beating the former lightweight champion in the division was great for my confidence. I know I’m a competitor and I can compete with anybody. I’ve always been confident, but I think the win over Sean really pushed me over the edge and made me realize that I can be a world champion.

On Veach:

Tapology: How do you feel about the new match up against Matt Veach? What do you see as his strengths, and what kind of problems is he going to pose for you?

Edgar: I know he originally fought at 170lbs, he is big and strong, he’s a good wrestler, and he comes from a great camp. In his last fight he showed a lot of resiliency, so I know he’s going to be ready to bang and he’s going to be willing to put it on the line. I’m definitely going to be aware of the power he has in his hands, but you can’t really focus on it too much, you’ve just got to go in there and do your thing.

On Penn and Sanchez:

Tapology: From a technical standpoint, what do you think you could bring into a fight with either Penn or Sanchez that they have not had to deal with to this point in their careers?

Edgar: I don’t know if it’s something they haven’t seen, but I think my well roundedness and my conditioning can pose some problems for them. The 155lb division is just a long list of evenly-matched guys—a lot of wrestlers, a lot of strikers—so I’m sure they’ve seen it all, but I don’t know, maybe I can just bring a little more heart and a better combination of everything into a fight with them, who knows.

Be sure to read the full interview to hear Edgar's thoughts on his loss to Gray Maynard last year--the only loss thus far in his professional career--how close he feels he is to a shot at the title, and his goal to remain undefeated throughout 2010.

he just beat the former UFC champ in sherk…

though if the UFC had a 145 division i’d probably want to see him cut down to that class instead.

Keyword being Former

He’d get murdered by Penn…and Sanchez….and Florian. I do think he’d do better at 145 though.

Frankie would have to fight Jose Aldo if he cuts to 145 and wants the belt

That would actually be a fun fight to watch, but I have to give into the hype of Aldo and say that Aldo would take that fight. I do think that Frankie has some good boxing and footwork coupled with great wrestling and improving jiu jitsu, so he would be a tough fight for anyone at either 145 or 155 even.

Like these guys said

Edgar will probably only encounter real success if he cuts to FW, or bulks up. Because as it stands, he’s definitely too small for LW, I mean honestly, Gray was able to pretty much take him down at will, and Sherk pretty much just dumped him whenever he tried (which was only like once or twice, admittedly.

However, dropping to FW also means having to deal with Aldo, who I don’t really think Frankie would be able to control on the mat or contend with standing.

i wouldn’t be surprised if in a few years nobody at lightweight could deal with aldo either!

I remember Sherk getting one takedown and getting stuffed on all his other attempts (granted, not many). Am I remembering right, or was that a different Sherk fight?

Sherk succeeded on one out of three takedowns and was easily stuffed on the other ones. The one he hit was perfectly timed and looked like a GSP takedown.

Guillotine.

I think Frank Would be trouble for anyone not named Penn

I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.

maybe

But like everyone says, he’s pretty small for 155. His hands looked good against Sherk, but that’s not exactly an elite striker, either. He has tons of heart and tremendous upside, but if he doesn’t bulk up and improve his striking, I can’t see him consistently beating upper echelon 55’ers.

Edgar at 145 would be a beast

At 155 I think he can beat anyone not named BJ Penn.

Guillotine.

Edgar vs. Florian is the match-up they should have made instead of Edgar/Veach and Florian/Guida. Too bad the UFC protects Kenny so much.

Im not sure if i can call giving him Guida protecting him. Thats a pretty good bounceback fight for a guy comin off a loss.

by Rabbit915 on Dec 4, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

ya dont think Lauzon, Huerta, Stevenson, Penn and now Guida is exactly protecting Florian
