Miguel Torres vs. Joseph Benavidez Planned for WEC 47

Photo

MMA Mania is reporting that Torres / Benavidez is in the works for March:

Former bantamweight champion Miguel Torres is in talks to return to action against top division prospect Joseph Benavidez at WEC 47: "Bowles vs. Cruz" from the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on March 6, 2010.

MMAmania.com (www.mmamania.com) learned of the planned match-up earlier today.

This is a hell of a fight if it gets made.  Torres has the reach to give Benavidez trouble and he certainly has more experience.  However, Joseph has relentless pacing, a good wrestling game and a lot of power in his hands.  The fight is a must win for Torres to launch himself into a rematch for the title he lost to Brian Bowles and one would think a win by Benavidez would put him in line for a shot of his own.

On paper this has all the makings of a fight of the year candidate

The height and size differential will be very apparent. Good fight, but I think Torres has too much on the feet and is too good on the ground for Benavidez to have a shot. I think Joseph needed 1 or 2 more fights before he fights the likes of Torres.

Great Fight

This is a great comeback fight for Miguel. Kind of interesting the WEC has no interest in giving Miguel a less cupcake comeback fight like Faber got with Jens. That’s good because I really wasn’t that excited for Jens/Faber. Miguel should take this though.

by Neil Manich on Dec 29, 2009 5:16 PM EST reply actions

Faber got the Jens rematch for monetary reasons, not because they were trying to give him a cupcake. Faber-Pulver 1 was the most watched fight in the history of the WEC. Urijah losing his title gave them a good excuse to hold a rematch and see if lightning would strike twice.

Its a joke that I don’t feel the need to explain. Also, its a set up to Brent and nottheface’s jokes and may I say, they knocked it out of the park.

How is Benavidez going to get in on Torres? He will be giving up a ton of reach.

by smoogy2 on Dec 29, 2009 5:27 PM EST reply actions

He is clearly going to have to eat some shots to get in range. Torres should be the favorite here, but he gets hit cleanly a lot, so if Benavidez can get in range he can maybe do a little work.

That is the thing, we’ve never seen anything to suggest Benavidez has that ability to step in, and Dominick Cruz just stifled him from the outside a few months ago. If anything Benavidez possesses the skills of an outfighter, which doesn’t do him a lot of good against other seasoned strikers who have much greater range. As long as Torres uses his reach and resists the temptation to go wild, I don’t think Benavidez will do much better than Manny Tapia did.

I propose that he will not get inside on him. So to answer your question, he won’t.

Benavidez isn’t just giving up reach. He’s giving up a whole arm. Still, anything can happen, flukey overhand right ala Serra v St. Pierre.

With Urijah conering him it won’t be a problem. “Just go nuts in there.”

Nice match-up, but..

..I would have preferred to see Torres fighting Damacio Page.

I have a plan for Miguel Torres...

He should fight the champ at every weight class starting at 135 and going up. Win or lose it would be a great series.

Torres vs Lesnar. Yay!

Honestly, I think he would get a worse beating from BJ.

He had rotator cuff surgery just over a month ago. After the surgery, he thought he’d back in the cage within 3 months. So it’d be cutting it close for this fight, if it were to happen. Fighting Miguel Torres coming off a surgery = not a smart idea.

Yeah, it would be cutting it close, but imagine the fireworks. I couldn’t see it going the distance.

I cant wait to watch this fight live.

A fight i have been waiting for ever since i saw Benavidez in Dream. Guy never stops coming and has some skills of his own. Torres will be the overwhelming favorite but i woudln’t be 100% shocked if Joe managed a win.

Benevidez

WEC has threatened to be adding Flyweights….I believe Joseph would be a natural champion in that weightclass, but is going to have big problems as a Bantamweight, and they were shown against Cruz. He’s very talented but gives up too much to the best fighters IMO.

I like this match-up very much, but i must say good night Joseph.

I was kinda pissed the UFC isn't coming back to Columbus but I might go to this card now.

Chance to see Miguel fight live might not come around anytime soon on the east coast anytime soon.
