Thats what you get for wanting to fight 12 times a year.

Talk about not giving Paulo Thiago a break
If Paulo Thiago ends up fighting Alves, then it really shows that he just can’t catch a break in the UFC. Even fighting Volkmann, Volkmann was a pretty highly touted prospect and not just some scrub and not an easy win for Paulo Thiago. Paulo Thiago gets no love at all, so good for him for making the best and doing as well as he has considering who he has fought.
Koscheck needs to rest or something. While I am not a big fan of his, I do respect that he wants to fight as much as he can and takes fights on short notice a lot. I look forward to an eventual Josh Koscheck vs Dan Hardy matchup.

Kos tweets:
Well the news is out. I am not fighting feb 6 UFC 109. Do due to injury. I will be good to go back to training in a couple weeks I hope!!
It’s all good & I’ll get my body rested & back to the top real soon. Keep checking my Twitter & I’ll post news on my recovery.

This card never had Vera/Jones
when Lil Nog got hurt, they scrapped his fight with Vera altogether and set up Vera-Jones for the Colorado UFN in March.
It was first rumored for this card
but never announced.
the more Kos is out of the picture the better…he won’t fight Fitch and he can’t beat GSP. He is the uber-heel gatekeeper of the 170lb division.
with the trigg domination, rumble domination, this rematch win, and one more win i could see myself watchin a kos/ gsp rematch

Good
This rematch was pointless to have just a year later. Both guys should be built up.

I'm tellin ya..
Logan and Natasha getting fired for possibly voicing their opinion about the Koschek/Johnson fight. Then he gets an “undisclosed injury” before the fight. Something suspicious is goin on…
Sorry…had to bite it
Arianny got pissed at Karo, and look at what happened to him...
Kos called Logan and Arianny Dog Shit, and then this…

So what’s his injury if he’ll be back training in two weeks? Infection? Contract-unhappi-itis?
Being overrated is overrated.
Mike Swick has agreed to step in for his injured American Kickboxing Academy teammate Josh Koscheck on short notice and face Paulo Thiago (12-1) at UFC 109 on Feb. 6.
MMAFighting.com learned of the new bout after reporting Koscheck’s decision to pull out of his scheduled fight against Thiago earlier Monday.
Swick (14-3) last competed at UFC 105, losing to Dan Hardy via unanimous decision. The loss marked his first since dropping down to welterweight in 2008.

I like this fight a lot more for Paulo.
Much better matchup than Koscheck, and now he will have fought all three AKA welterweights.
Swick showed a lot of vulnerability against Hardy’s striking. Paulo hits like a brick, has been bulking up over the past year, and has been polishing his hands. If he has the killer instinct instead of walking away after a big punch, I can see him rocking Swick and finishing in the second.

The question is, if he handles Swick on the feet, does Swick take it to the ground? He won’t have much of an advantage there
certainly not, thiago had fitch in a deep sub, fitch is just a tough bastard thiago would have a significant advantage on the ground
by Austin Martin on Dec 28, 2009 9:09 PM EST up reply actions
Remember he is first and foremost a jiujitsu fighter.
who happens to have crazy knockout power at his weight. More than half of Paulo’s wins are by submission. He did pretty well threatening Fitch by stringing sub attempts and Swick doesn’t have Fitch’s toughness or skill. The things I see as being potential problems for Paulo in this fight are reach and his fading gas tank. If he fixes his cardio in his new build, he’s gonna be a much more potent force than people give him credit for.

-Randall Munroe
i was thinking this too
He could very well be the 170 lb version of Thiago Silva, but I think he’d be well served to go a more technical direction with his striking

Do you really think he has great KO power? Outside of the shot he landed on Kos I dont think he has shown tremendous power in his hands.
How about when he floored Volkmann in the first?
His nickname in Brazil is Hands of Stone. It’s a little cliche in the US so they didn’t bring it over, but he’s got dynamite in his hands.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"

Interesting, considering he only had one TKO win in his career before Kos, and that was via injury.
"My diet is like Atkins, but with the carbs." - BJ Penn
I didn't make the name
nor have I been punched by him. I’m reporting what I’ve heard from the promoters and trainers I’ve spoken with. Well, the one’s I believe at least…

-Randall Munroe
Its not as far-fetched as you think. From whatever angle you look at it, Silva hasnt really faced ppl with BJ’s chin and Paulo knocked out a fairly stout guy in Kos, so I think its apropos to make the comparison

Swick would win, he has long googly arms, and Thiago doesn’t punch as hard as Hardy.

anyone else thinks the UFC might put too many fights on?
Not that I am complaining, but could all these injuries coming from pressure to fill these cards and not letting these guys really take some time off?
I was just about to write this
Are these injuries the result of UFC’s schedule?
Is it reasonable to expect the human body to hold up fighting 3 maybe 4 fights a year for a 3/4 time span? The training is grueling and the schedule makes it a year round sport for these guys.
Kos is a guy who is all gung-ho about fighting constantly.
Keep firing Assholes!
Editor of www.downsyndromematuremidgetsheltlandponyporn.com/
yep
Both Little Nog and Kos fought at UFC 106 a mere month a go or so.
I know we as fans want to see the top guys all the time, but you can’t train then fight then go straight back to training and not expected to get hurt. The body is not meant to go through that.
The flip side is asking if training camps are too long.
The long camp used to be a function of cards not being frequent enough to get guys fights quickly. Now it’s more like a habit. With so much heavy training time, injuries are bound to happen regularly.
Not sure if even I believe this, but it’s something I’m mulling over.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
This is a valid point too. Even if the promotion isn’t filling up their schedule these guys are training 24/7 on their own.
The question still is how long these guys can maintain that sort of schedule. Time off does the body good. It’s such a young sport, this could be a growing pain. Never has a promotion been able to put on such an expanded schedule and never has there been such an opportunity for so many train full time.
UFC has 250+ fighters. 10% get hurt.... you should expect more than that because they're
in the gym all the time. They train but also help their friends train so it’s not such a surprise.
The only surprise is that they only got injuried in groups.
by snakecharmer1340 on Dec 28, 2009 9:11 PM EST up reply actions
How many of these guys are actually fighting 3-4 times a year?
If you went through case by case, I suspect most of the guys who were injured would have been on schedule for 2-3 fights in a year. GSP, Lesnar, Gonzaga, Nogueira, Alves, Tyson Griffin, Markham, Duffee, all were on pace for 3 or fewer fights over the course of a single year.
You have enough trials, eventually, all hell breaks loose over one sequence. This is just a really bad run for the UFC, not a symptom of overuse. If anything, the UFC has cut back on scheduling fighters.

Didn’t Swick step in for someone else not that long ago? Or was it that he himself got hurt and someone replaced him? Can’t remember.
by Monday Morning Martial Artist on Dec 29, 2009 6:06 AM EST reply actions
He got hurt and Paul Daley replaced him… now he’s got a replacement as an opponent, Mick Swick is replacing Josh Koschek, and Josh will probably be replacing another fighter who has yet to get injured – but we know he will…
And it’s just one big orgy of replacements
