Dustin Hazelett is one of my favorite fighters,
but I don’t think he should be the favorite here. I think it should be the other way around. Dustin Even, and Daley at -120.
The question is can Daley keep it standing.
He has been taken down pretty easy in other promotions. This will be a good test for Daley.
Daleys Def wrestling , take down def , and getting back to his feet from the guard have been great. Daleys problem was never a lack of all 3 above it was his cardio hands down after he punches himself out or gets tired from defending the takedowns. When he gets tired thats when he gets taken down and pretty much just gives up from there. If he coomes into this fight in tip top shape he wins hands down. Another thing not going for Hazelett is he is not known for his great wrestling or power double leg he gets most of his subs from his opponets taking him down in his guard or off the scramble and Daley is not going to do that.
While I’m a bigger fan of Hazelett, I’d definitely agree that he should be the underdog. Dustin is built to submit wrestlers, not to work for takedowns against a fast, talented kickboxer who has very good takedown defense. If Dustin can work his length with leg kicks and straights, maybe he keeps Daley off of him, slows the fight down, and eventually gets Daley down, but it’s a stretch of the imagination. Probably Daley blows his doors off in the first round. I don’t like this fight at all for Dustin, especially if he’s got a bit of rust on him.

This fight has a Daley KTFO special written all over it.
McLovin’ might be Shinya Aoki’esque with his Jits Wizardry, but Daley’s power got negate that completely. All fights start on the feet and the longer is stays there, the shorter Hazelett’s night will be.

@deowade
He’s also been submitted 5 times in his career (granted only once in the last three years). Shields was able to submit him with an armbar and while I think Shields is a better wrestler than McLovin I think it does show that this fight could go either way.
Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.
It's worth noting that it took Shields nearly 2 full rounds
and numerous dominant positions to finally tap Daley…and Shields has much better BJJ than Hazelett, just not as flashy. So it’s not like Daley’s guaranteed to get subbed the second it hits the ground.
I do agree Shields has better BJJ than Hazelett, but I think it’s very possibly in time we’ll see Hazelett may have better BJJ for MMA than not just Shields, but lot’s and lot’s of people in MMA.
"He hit like a bitch."
I disagree with you there. Maybe straight up JJ Shields might be better but McLovin has shown his MMA JJ is much better than Shields when it comes to finishing opponents.
That would be because Shields has faced much higher-quality opponents
Hazelett has worked his “MMA JJ” against guys like Burkman, Goulet, and Stevie Lynch, who aren’t exactly known for having good ground games. His submission of McCrory is perhaps the only time he’s tapped anyone with a decent ground game. When Hazelett faced someone with good BJJ in Tony DeSouza, McLovin was the one doing the tapping.
Shields on the other hand submitted Nick Thompson and Mike Pyle, both of whom are excellent grapplers, and he had his way with Renato “Charuto”, who was at one time BJ Penn’s grappling instructor.
It’s easy to show flashy “MMA JJ” when you’re matched up with guys who can’t defend a sub.
Its easy to show flashy MMA JJ? Hmm very interesting, if its so easy I wonder why only a handful of guys use it. Shields is good positionally but barely even looked impressive vs a scrub on Bully Beatdown.
Did you bother to read the second half of my sentence which you're referring to?
And I like how you conveniently ignored the first two paragraphs as well.
And I’m sorry…did you really just try to use Bully Beatdown as evidence of a fighter’s skills? ;)
Hazelett has had some nice subs but its nothing near in my opinion what Aoki has done. Just look at difference in competition they have fought and who they have pulled subs out against.
They are comparable in flashiness and style
but not in accomplishments or competition. I think Hazelett’s crazy jiujitsu is a better match against Daley than the simplicity of someone like Shields. The variable that people keep leaving out is that Daley has twice as many fights as Hazelett, and that experience may prove to be key. I got Daley by KTFO.

shields would have an easier time against a guy like Daley, than Hazelett will,
cause the guy has wayyyy better wrestling than Dustin.. It’s that simple.

If Dustin gets him down,
(which I think he will have a hard time doing), It’s going to be over quick…

most of hazelett’s losses are by ko.
most of daley’s are by sub.
Really want my boy the armbar mad scientist to pull this one off (or around, across, over, under, etc.) but my gut tells me he’s got to protect his chin with all he’s got. The rust won’t help matters, either.

also the factor yet unmentioned in terms of the striking game
hazelett has 4 inches of height and I dunno how much reach on Daley.

being a brit i’ll obviously lean towards the likes of Daley, Bisping and Hardy but i genuinly believe this is a fight for Daley to showcase his KO ability. Obviously if it goes to ground its a different matter, but the question for me is how long can Hazelett keep it standing/successfully negotiate the takedown, without being caught with a huge left hook. Daley by nasty KO.

Paulina Daley gon’ whoop dat ass.

And re reach; Dustin is 76.5, Semtex is 76. I don’t think that’s going to be a factor.
