Quote of the Day: Anderson Silva Believes Nate Marquardt Will Be His Successor

46334_medium

"I think the next champion of this category will be Nate Marquardt. If I’m not over with the belt, I believe Nate will be the next champion 84kg, the next guy to win for a long, long time this way."

"I’ve been following all his fights and he has evolved a lot since the last time we fought. He has evolved a lot, it’s hard, has a good feature for a fighter, evolved a lot during the fight. I believe he is the next champion in that category"

--Anderson Silva, thinks that Nate Marquardt will be the next dominant middleweight champion when he retires or vacates the belt. Do you agree?

My answer?

YES. I’m a firm believer of Nate’s abilities. He might not dominate the division like what Andy did but he WILL be champ.

Skadoosh!

I know I’ll probably be alone on this, but I’m used to it by now. Wandy will be the next MW champ once Andy is gone, you heard it here folks!

you're probably

right, I have no doubt that Nate will hold the belt, but I do agree that Wandy will more then likely get it before Nate, and most likely for marketing reasons.

by proflex on Dec 28, 2009 11:33 AM EST up reply actions

I’m gonna agree on that as well. As long as the weight cut is not a issue wandy will be a monster at 185.

by mr. gogoplata on Dec 28, 2009 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

The weight cut visibly affected him when he had to make 195. 185 will be worse. Wandy’s days are numbered, I am afraid.

I have some faith in you after the Shogun/Dragon fight, but Wandy reigning MW is a huge stretch.

it is possibble, i cant think of anyone else. HOwever , i think belfort might have a chance of beating silva, but i dont think he will reighn champ for long time , if he does

by #1 piggy on Dec 28, 2009 9:17 AM EST reply actions

Nate has improved alot, but his chin is not durable enough to hold the belt for very long.

by mmalogic on Dec 28, 2009 9:22 AM EST reply actions

I have never noticed any weakness in Nate’s chin. Aside from getting iced by Silva, I can’t recall anyone else really hurting him. Leites dropped him with a punch, but Nate wasn’t rubber legged or anything and immediately got his senses back. He walked right through everything that Gouveia and Kampmann threw at him.

by Steve4192 on Dec 28, 2009 9:31 AM EST up reply actions

Marquardt vs. Gouveia

Please looke at that fight again. Gouveia definitely stunned Marquardt. Nate did not walk through all of his punches.

With that said, I have to agree with mmalogic all the way. His chin is not durable. I would have loved to see Henderson vs. Marquardt or even Franklin vs. Marquardt. Either way I just don’ t see Marquardt defending the title for a long period of time. We haven’t really seen Goran Reljic unleashed on the MW division. I’m sure there will be another LHW who will try his hands in the MW division soon. 2010, we will see something happen. Wanderlei Silva vs. Nate Marquardt?

Not too sure about this i kinda think the belts gonna jump around alot like its been doin in the lhw division with no dominant champ appearing

also theirs no real promising young prospects who could concievably become dominant kchamps in the middleweight division unlike bones jones and ryan bader in lhw todd duffee and brendan schaub in hw and rumble johnson in ww

Rumble should move to MW anyway. Maybe Anderson retiring is what he’s waiting on.

People need to get off of his nuts. He has a ton of physical gifts but so far why is he so impressive? He knocked out a Yoshida after coming in ridiculously overweight and everytime he takes a step up in competition he gets crushed.

I don't think it is that interesting,

Wanderlei has lost 4 or his last 5; the game has passed him on. That said i expect an exciting win against Bisping

by castleeb on Dec 28, 2009 10:50 AM EST up reply actions

Wanderlei's Recent Losses in Perspective . . .

Before you dismiss him because of his losses . . . take a look at them.

- Franklin: decision loss in a highly competitive bout, some say controversial
- Jackson: He murdered Rampage twice. He decided to give the fans a show and paid for it with a serious KO loss. Rampage has dropped 4 of his last 5 opponents with a punch.
- Liddell: Was there really any losers in that match?!?
- Henderson: He said he wasn’t feeling well coming off a flu and decided to fight any way. I’ll give him a pass. After all he did beat Henderson via decision in the past.
- Cro-Cop: Most middleweight-LHW fighters trying to stand with a K-1 level heavyweight striker like Cro-Cop might get KTFO’ed.

NOW, if Wanderlei loses to Bisping, then yeah, the game has passed him on.

damn it, you beat me to it

just so I don’t think I wasted my time I’ll post my excuses as well (I wrote it before seing yours) :

Note: I acknowledge that I am very biased towards Wandy, but I still have faith in the mad dog:

Loss to Rich – I agree he lost to Rich, but he gave a hell of a fight, and that was his first time fighting outside of 205 (first time having to cut that much). Hopefully he got used to it by now and will be a force at MW. The good thing that came out of this fight is that Wandy didn’t get KO’d by top competition.

Loss to Page – he got KO’d early, a well placed punch by a great mma boxer in Quinton. If they fight again, I expect Wandy to give a much more competitive fight if not a win.

Win against Keith – not that big of a deal, really.

Loss to Chuck – This was Chuck’s last big win, and it was big because it was against Wandy. I still count Chuck as a top 10 fighter.

Loss to Henderson – he had the Flu for a week towards the event, had to go to the hospital as a result (this is a documented event), he didn’t even show up for his open workout because of the Flu.

Loss to Mirko – Ko’d by one of the greatest stand up fighter in the history of MMA. Not only was Mirko a HW and wandy a LHW (or MW in pride), this Mirko is not the Mirko of the UFC, he is the Mirko of Pride. The one who won the GP and went three close rounds with Fedor.

WAR WANDY!!!

You've been emboldened too much by Shougun's performance

Is it impossible that Wandy could have a renaissance at 185, of course not, but he’s going to have to show two things before I’m putting any money down.
1. That he can make the cut to 185
2. That he is still capable of a great performance and that the wear and tear hasn’t taken its toll.

Nate will probably be next champion I guess. However, he doesn’t have the amazing skillset of Silva (When Silva’s trying obviously) and but he’s as marketable as Silva, if not worse. I.E. Doubtful he’s a huge PPV draw. And Silva has 10x the personality of Nate. I think UFC knows this. Why else would they give Nate the runaround for so long and a fight with Chael Sonnen?

by 831 Son on Dec 28, 2009 11:32 AM EST reply actions

1 He’s already had a title shot and got wiped out
2 He stalled his momentum again with his loss to Leites
3 He was supposed to be fighting Hendo instead of Sonnen until Hendo got a case of delusions of grandeur.

I think Vitor Belfort and Rich Franklin would probs beat Nate...

He is a v. good tho, shame we didn’t see him against Hendo. Would have been a great fight and a good test for him. Anyway my opinion is Belfort will be next champ (after he loses to Silva of course and works his way back up).

by Ilias on Dec 28, 2009 12:38 PM EST reply actions

Nate will be the next champ.

But not while Anderson is still holding the belt. Once Anderson fully moves up to LHW, Nate will become champ. Will he dominate? yeah, maybe, but he’ll always have that thing hanging over his head: he’s a great champ, but he could never beat Anderson. At least that’s how I see it. I don’t even see Vitor beating Anderson.

I love me some Sexyama!

Alan Belcher or Goran Relijic

Both of these fighters are young enough and talented enough to be really scary in the future. They are my picks to be big things in the MW division. Nate is like Florian, a great fighter who was born at the wrong time.

"Once Flamengo, Flamengo until die"

by Eduardo Cruz on Dec 28, 2009 2:05 PM EST reply actions

So a one punch KO

Means a fighter is infinitely better than his opponent? It doesn’t matter that we never saw Maia work his BJJ against Nate. We just have to assume that Nate’s BJJ is better than Maia’s too by your logic.

I guess Paulo Thiago got that uppercut KO against Kos, he should be next in line for GSP. Because it was a KO.

by 831 Son on Dec 28, 2009 4:34 PM EST up reply actions

Infinitely? No, but it showed that Maia’s one-dimensional game and obvious striking aren’t enough, while Nate, who has worked on his striking to compliment his already-advanced grappling, is a superior fighter right now.

Settle down Son.

No-one said anything about infinately better, or whatever else you are trying to extrapolate from Anton’s comment. (Kos is not next in line for GSP either…)

2 men fought, 1 got KTFO in quick time. For now, enough said, especially since it was their last fight.

Saying so and so can beat someone is easy to do in MMA…

The way I think about it

If a fight happened 100 times there would be some distribution of victories. The results of these 100 trials would give us the “True” value of the fight, i.e. what the bookmakers should use.

Just because Serra knocks GSP our doesn’t mean that Serra would win that same fight most of the time.

That said the results of a one off fight matter a lot for informing us about what the “true” odds were. In the Maia Marquart fight we saw. 1. Maia striking sucks and. 2. Marquart has the power and technique to expose it.

I think Maia could still win, and I think Maia could improve, but Marquart has to be heavily favored in a rematch based on what we saw.

I've had Nate at #2 MW world wide for over a year or more.

Nate has been Anderson’s successor for years. People just keep giving Hendo credit for past greatness, and ppl put Franklin above Nate because most seem to think Frank beat Nate but they never fought! Nate is the next MW champion and he’s imo the one guy that can take down Anderson Silva from his MW perch. The guy has improved time in and time out and basically been a wrecking ball smashing everyone in his way since his loss to Anderson. If it wasn’t for Herb Dean’s stupidity ,he’d already have gotten his shot but once Nate beats down Sonnen. Anderson vs. Nate 2 will probably be the fight I look forward to next, Nate reminds me of GSP after his loss to Hughes he’s more focused, better prepared and ready to be the best at his weight.
