Official 2009 Bloody Elbow Reader Awards
All right, kids. It's time for your year end award show. If you're unfamiliar with what's going on, I'll direct you back to the 2008 version.
Long story short. We have award categories. You have up to three votes per category. Your top choice will get 5 points, second choice gets 3 points, and your last choice gets 1 point. You are not obligated to use all three choices. When the voting is done, I tally up the totals and we have some winners.
After the break, I will list the categories and some top candidates for each. THE LISTED CANDIDATES ARE NOT THE ONLY ELIGIBLE OPTIONS. I am bound to have missed MANY valid and deserving fighters, fights, people, cards, etc. It is strongly encouraged to use the comments to raise awareness of any candidate (listed or not) and any questions you may have about the voting process itself.
Last year, I was very lenient with the process as I kind of threw it together last minute. This year's awards will be run as a much tighter ship. You MUST e-mail me your vote. Any vote in the comments will be hidden, and I may start handing out warnings if people are unable to follow this first, simple direction. Second, you MUST title your e-mail exactly as I detail below. Third, you MUST send your votes in the correct format, also detailed below. You are not a special snowflake; you do not get to participate in whatever way you please. We got more than enough participants last year, and if you cannot follow these instructions, you do not deserve a say. In addition, I will not e-mail you back to inform you of your lost ballot, so make sure you get your act together the first time.
You may vote at any point upon reading this post, but once you have voted, you may not change anything. This means that if you want to see the results of the Dynamite!!! show, you should hold off voting until 2010. Voting will be open until midnight on January 3rd.
Candidates are eligible if they took place, competed, existed, etc. between January 1st and December 31st, 2009 (U.S. time).
HOW TO VOTE

Add BJ to the fighter of the year category?
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
seriously
dude cemented his legacy
by cagefightonacid on Dec 27, 2009 1:52 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
for anyone but aldo to win it though is criminal.
the guy had 3 first round stoppages, and a second round title fight stoppage that he decimated the #1 guy in the world in his weight class. GSP was dominant, but only fought twice, one being finished, fedor had two fights but neither guy was truly a top 10 guy, silva had the leites debacle, and lyoto had the iffy shogun victory.
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 2:23 AM EST up reply actions
and about bj, he was completely dominated by GSP.
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 2:24 AM EST up reply actions
I think BJ Penn should get a pass on the GSP fight, he was fighting way the hell out of his weight class against the #2 P4P guy who had 15lb of muscle on him.
Who has ever come bouncing back from a beating of that magnitude to look as great as BJ ever?
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
he was the former champion of that weight class, who at one point in time beat the best WW that had ever existed. And got completely, completely dominated. I don’t think someone who lost can truly be considered fighter of the year
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 2:27 AM EST up reply actions
I don’t see that losing should disqualify you from FOTY, especially if it’s in a higher weight class.
If you are hands down, virtually untouchable and utterly dominant #1 in your weight division with an amazing and devastating skillset, you’re a shoe in.
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
ok. i don’t disagree bj could be in the talks for it, but if he won it over aldo, simply for putting on two four round dominating performances, vs. 3 first round and 1 second round KOs, i would believe that people are only voting for him because its bj.
its a fighter a vs. fighter b situation, if you didn’t know the names, go by the stats.
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 2:33 AM EST up reply actions
8 strikes absorbed over nearly 5 rounds.
That’s not bad.
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
thats only one fight. and i certainly believe he has a great should at performance of the year for that.
however, i’d still give aldo the performance of the year for the brown fight. or gsp for the bj fight.
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 2:36 AM EST up reply actions
and i’d even say that his KO of cub swanson could be #1 of the year. so theres three categories that he could win, i just don’t see how he hasnt had a better year than bj.
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 2:40 AM EST up reply actions
2010 will be the year of the Aldo, we’ll give him breakout fighter of the year this time around.
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
i don’t know why he couldnt win both.
haha sorry, i just love me some aldo. that guy is everything i love about this sport.
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 2:48 AM EST up reply actions
BJ might deserve consideration
But I don’t see how you could objectively vote for BJ over Aldo.
If Mousasi has accomplished enough to be on the list, BJ deserves to be.
I mean Mousasi was in the Super-Hulk tournament for fucksakes.
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
The Gary Goodridge fight will put him over the top, though.

Even though he isn’t my fav. fighter in the world…. I think GSP is a good choice. Aside from being a dominant champ he is also the only fighter doing mainstream commercials (2 diff companies, both this year) and getting possible exposure for the sport out there into the world.
"A champion is someone who gets up when he can't." - Jack Dempsey
i certainly think thats an applicable line of reasoning. but then i would think we should make a category for the athlete who contributes the most towards making mma a worldwide actual sport, an embassador one might say.. someone who epitomizes true class, ethic, and hard work
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 2:45 AM EST up reply actions
MMA ambassador of the year? Sounds like a good category to me.
by ufc4 on Dec 27, 2009 9:26 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Dang.
I loved the Jardine vs. Rampage fight, one of my favorites, but there were some things that just outshone it this year.
Is anybody else thinking Shogun for fighter of the year? What an effing comeback story. coming off his first really devastating loss, he enters the year looking out of shape and scraping by to avenge a loss. Then KOs Chuck while looking better, but not giving us enough time to really judge. Then, when nobody had any faith in him (Fenix, orcus, and I aside) and the betting odds were worse than Fedor vs. Rogers, he won the fight according to Dana effing White. Dana said that the LHW belt, one of the greatest marketing tools the UFC has ever had, is in the wrong hands. Damn, son.

Still no wins over a top five opponent this year, but it has been awesome to see him come back in such a big way. It’s good to have him in consideration, but you think this because you think he won a narrow decision over Lyoto, not because he beat Coleman and Chuck. And Lyoto beat Silva, Evans and Shogun this year. Personally I’m giving it to Aldo, since he had the most active and dominant year, and I value the featherweights equal to the heavier weight classes.
by Kwisatz Haderach on Dec 27, 2009 3:33 AM EST up reply actions
Makeup Vote
That seems like a way to makeup for a “bad” decision. I mean the win over Coleman and Liddell are worth very little and the win over Coleman wasn’t impressive. A narrow win over Machida doesn’t beat out the exploits of Aldo.
He's my second choice after Aldo
for basically the reasons you describe. It’s great to see a vet who looked like he was done return to his championship form, and for all the hype about the untouchability of Machida (which I bought into as much as anyone) he showed how to fight the guy and look good, whether you believe the decision was correct or not.
No reason the fighter of the year has to have a belt. I’d totally understand nominating Jones here as well, since he looks like an up and comer that everyone is going to have to watch out for. In fact, I think I just talked myself into making him my third pick.

This year....
There will be no confusion about your ballot example being the choices readers have to choose from…..lol
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
One major Fight of the Year candidate missing from that list is Hideo Tokoro vs. Abel Cullum from DREAM 9.
It’s my pick for best of the year. Check it out.
(I thought Tokoro vs Hiroyuki Takaya from DREAM 11 was pretty good too.)
Any Tokoro fight is better than many of the ones provided.
He’s the Asian Guida that is actually good at martial arts.
While I’ve seen most of the FOTY candidates from Sengoku and DREAM, I definitely forget them when it comes to year end awards time.

Black House isn’t really a fight camp. If they qualify, then M-1 Global is also a top contender, with Fedor Emelianenko, Gegard Mousasi, Karl Amoussou and Magomed Shikshabekov going 13-0 combined in 2009.
Also, Mike Pierce vs. Brock Larson for upset of the year.
Your point is lost— Black House is a collection of fighters all training together. The four M-1 fighters you listed don’t all train together. Anderson, Cigano and the Nog brothers are fixtures of Black House and train with one another regularly.
Also, I don’t think anyone is considering Pierce over Larson as big of an upset after his subsequent loss to Brian Foster.

-Sakuraba
by Charles Awad on Dec 27, 2009 3:24 AM EST up reply actions
Even more reason to hand Pierce the award. He took Larson’s soul forever!
Ed Soares himself has admitted Black House isn’t a pro camp in the traditional sense. The Nogueiras, Anderson Silva, and Lyoto Machida all have their own respective posses. Lyoto trains in Belem, the Nogueiras have their gym in Florida… Black House is like a “super group”, they don’t train together all the time. Which is why I prefer to call it the Ed Soares Money Crew.
As for M-1, it looks like the new gym in Stary Oskol will serve as the Russian equivalent to Black House, they are looking to bring the top Russian M-1 fighters there to train with Fedor
If that gym brings those aforementioned fighters together with any regularity and they see continued success, I’d insist on their inclusion next year. That’s the funny thing about “fight camp” versus “fight gym”.

Those are some really good picks.

I like the Nova Uniao pick
But are we crediting them with BJ Penn or just Aldo and… Leites?
I’m a little mixed up after the black house discussion above what constitutes a ‘camp’ — because by the broadest team affiliation Penn + Aldo would be pretty convincing for #1, even though I’d assume they haven’t actually trained together (it’d almost be like considering Diego part of Team Jackson in terms of relation)
Commentator of the Year
Personally I’d choose Kenny Florian or Pat Miletich over everyone else but The Voice. The other picks seem too embarrassing.

I don’t know if Kenny did enough shows to really qualify. Pat’s a good choice too.

It's true that Kenny didn't do enough shows
but he did such a great job on Brown vs Faber II… everyone else seems to be stagnating that it’s hard to vote for 3 candidates.

I'm gonna get crucified, but...
Goldberg is actually improving. I thought he actually called a better fight during Florian-Penn than Joe did. It’s crazy and ridiculous and I hate admitting it, but he got my #3 pick for that. Trust me, check out the vid. Shit, I’d call it upset of the year.
Y’all need to get off my back about “OMG WHY ISN’T/IS THIS ON THIS LIST?” Right that shit in.

Cause I kind of want to include when Ben Henderson stopped fighting and went limp on top of Cerrone…

Shoulda had a nomination period.
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
I’d like to make this as stress free for myself as possible. While a nomination period would certainly be fun, it really just adds another round to the voting. I made it very clear that people shouldn’t just rush to vote if they aren’t sure, and the comments can be used as a space to nominate and discuss.

How much should context matter?
Just a subject for discussion, but how much should the circumstances matter. Do we prefer a spinning back elbow KO in a second tier promotion or a big knock out in a UFC title fight.
For me its a combination of the two, but I heavily weigh the context.
It’s all up to you. I, for instance, definitely weight context in the fight of the year. A title fight that may be a smidge less technical or exciting will still get the nod over, say, Cullum/Tokoro, because of the atmosphere, stakes, etc. from me. Others don’t look at it the same way.

I would actually put Frank Mir under Personality of the Year
Mir literally made a fight that no one really cared about (Mir vs Kongo) into this grudge match that has no real backstory or basis. It was just Mir talking a bunch of trash and Kongo getting so utterly worked up over it, and many fans ate that up. Add in his obsession with Lesnar, and how in every interview that Mir has that he will somehow discredit Lesnar.
Also, could you guys do me a favor and rec this thing so it gets up into the featured FanPost area?

What about Rick Story finishing an arm triangle against Brian Foster from inside his guard? It may not be a flashy submission, but it is pretty damn rare (I think).

Nothing will be added at this point. As for next year, I don’t think women’s MMA is big enough to warrant it’s own category.
