Quote of the Day 2: Fedor Emelianenko - "I Don't Make Faces"

EA has been wrapping up the photo shoots for their upcoming MMA video game. During the sessions, fighters are asked to make various facial expressions such as a look of suprise or pain.

During Fedor's shoot, the photographer noticed his face stayed the same, devoid of expression. The photographer then asked for Fedor to really try harder at which Fedor replied, "I don't make faces", and exited the room while retorting, "we are done here."

This is one of the most badass things ive heard, but cmon fedor. Rolling out of the photoshoot for the first Video game youll ever be on, he really doesnt want to spread his brand does he?

by JaTinkles on Dec 26, 2009 11:09 PM EST reply actions

Has anything Fedor has ever done make you think that he cares about spreading his brand?

by ufc4 on Dec 26, 2009 11:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

yes actually. That was the whole reason he signed with SF. By Co-promotion fedor could spread the M-1 brand.

by JaTinkles on Dec 27, 2009 12:21 AM EST up reply actions

i’m not positive but i believe ufc4 was talking about the “fedor” brand, not referring to his company

by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 12:22 AM EST up reply actions

But didnt he make it clear that His brand and the M-1 brand are sinonimus.

by JaTinkles on Dec 27, 2009 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

you’re taking it a bit out of context. you are correct, but that didn’t prove your point. fedor believes he is a building block of m-1, and that is why he is appearing in the game. however, i don’t think fedor believes he has to represent his brand by doing stupid reaction faces. his presence in the game is enough.

by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

your right. him just being in the game is “enough” but isnt that the fun of playing video games, doing things that usually dont happen in real life. EA sports doesnt want to do “enough” they want to be better than THQ.

by JaTinkles on Dec 27, 2009 12:46 AM EST up reply actions

If by “better” you mean “sell more copies” they might as well give up now cuz it’s not gonna happen.

by ufc4 on Dec 27, 2009 12:54 AM EST up reply actions

No, I think by “better” he meant “better”. EA is the world leader in sports games, I’m sure their first offering will feature MUCH better gameplay and less rigidity than Undisputed 2009.

by TDITZ on Dec 27, 2009 8:55 AM EST up reply actions

apparently you haven’t played first generation ea sports games on the next gen consoles. it took them three years to get madden right. madden 06, the first installment was horrible. However, NHL 09 and 10, and madden 09 and 10 are very very good. It takes them a bit.

Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.

by Ubernoober on Dec 26, 2009 11:32 PM EST reply actions

They tried to make a Fedor toilet paper

But it was a total fail because Fedor doesn’t take crap from anyone.

Seriously though Fedor really doesn’t make much facial expressions during fights , what’s the point ? When he’s right he’s right…

by JoelMan on Dec 26, 2009 11:37 PM EST reply actions

eh, i agree to an extent, but you gotta respect that he doesn’t give a flyin eff about what anyone thinks.

however, i’ve never seen him make a different face in a fight, so why would they try to impose one on him? He’s just an expressionless guy, and we all know that about him

by Austin Martin on Dec 26, 2009 11:52 PM EST up reply actions

it’s beyond not caring what anyone thinks… he’d being paid to do a job. he sure made a ‘face’ vs fujita.

i’m not a fedor nut hugger by any means, but they shouldve known he was a “dbag” by what theyve heard about him. for them to be surprised by this, the guy seems like an asshole but i think he genuinely wants no part of acting the role.

by cagefightonacid on Dec 27, 2009 12:20 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Well that’s not good enough for me, he knows what kind of image he wants to project and I don’t think some photographer who has probably never seen an MMA fight should make that decision.

by ufc4 on Dec 27, 2009 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

yup. fedor is stoic. just his demeanor. i don’t know who actually cares about seeing a surprised look in a video game, most of the time i’m too “cloudy” to notice that stuff

exactly. he’s in the game because EA probably tossed an obscene amount of money at him because they realized he is the path to true competition with undisputed. by ufc4 on Dec 27, 2009 1:11 AM EST up reply actions

His job is to protect a fighter.

Jawing off is putting himself in danger. Telling a fighter to stop makes sense, even if there’s no specific rule and the ref can’t warn or take points for it.

I love when fighters talk shit during the fights, mainly because I know that’s how I get during competition as well. Respect before, respect after, but totally caught up in the moment during.

also my understanding.

by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

Basically, I mean I really doubt Maz was worried about the safety of the fighter in that situation, I think he just wanted him to shut up. And once again, the refs job is to enforce the rules and there is no rule against talking in the cage that I know of.

by ufc4 on Dec 27, 2009 1:24 AM EST up reply actions

I’m saying that just because it’s his job to enforce the rules doesn’t mean he’s only entitled to follow guidelines and nothing else.

Fry cooks at burger king chat with eachother, but that’s not part of their job. a police officers job is to enforce the law, but they do their own things.

by ontite on Dec 27, 2009 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 1:32 AM EST up reply actions

That’s what I’m saying. Just because Maz’s rules don’t incorporate telling a fighter to shut up, doesn’t mean he doesn’t have to.

i think i understand what you’re getting at, but the point im trying to make is that when Maz told Diaz to stop talking, it wasnt because he was trying to protect Diaz’s jaw, you can tell by the way he says it Diaz, he just wants him to shut up.
During the Guida-Nate Diaz fight, Nate kept yelling “209 bitch!” whenever he hit Guida and the ref didnt tell him to stop then for his protection

I'm saying it's not baseless.

He has reason to tell him not to talk excessively, it’s putting himself in danger that isn’t directly related to fight technique.

I’m all for a good old fashioned Mazzagatti bash-fest, but we can all think of much more legitimate issues with him. Cain-Rothwell stoppage? What the hell! I was loving that fight, Rothwell was defending himself intelligently (poorly, but intelligently) and he stops it? There was hightlight reel material to be made!

I believe his attitude is pretty authentic.

He really just does not give a fuck and something about that makes me like him. He’s one of the only bad attitude fighters/heels in MMA that I like. Nick Diaz ain’t no bitch.

for sure. i’m not say that it isn’t genuine, but he talked all that shit about frank, and about scott smith, and was humble to both after. I think there are elements of both

I think he means everything he says

and after the fight, thinks “Man, you’re ballsy for getting in here against me. Kudos on that at least.” Maybe professional respect with no personal respect?

haha i couldn’t begin to psychoanalyze nick. i just can’t fuckin wait to see him fight again, his last two fights have been so dominant, as a fan they were just incredible to watch

by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 1:18 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed.

He’d be an irritant if he wasn’t so effing talented. His boxing style is so unique in MMA and difficult to defend because of his incredible conditioning. His BJJ is fantastic, especially against somebody he’s worn down with heavy body shots and pitter patter to the head. His chin and heart are more than respectable. If he works on his wrestling, he’ll be [even more of] a force to be reckoned with at 170 or 185.

ive heard people talk about his boxing style, that he doesnt throw hard punches as much as constant jabs that eventually just wear down his opponent

by flyingkneetoface on Dec 27, 2009 1:37 AM EST up reply actions

rogan loved the term “pitter patter”

but it seems to me that he chooses to throw softer shots from all angles to keep his opponent guessing, and then will steadily increase his power as more and more land, and he is able to find angles.

he landed what, like 250/ 300 shots in his last fight? can’t throw that many for power

by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 1:40 AM EST up reply actions

250/400 some I think?

It was insane. More strikes than most five rounders. His conditioning is both inspirational and humiliating to me.

As for his style, he throws a lot of soft shots and mixes power in. When an opponent thinks they can wade through a punch to counter, he turns up the power. When they try to defend their head from the incoming power shot after a few soft blows, he puts power into the body. As soon as the hands drop to defend that, he’s back to working the head. There’s almost no chance to breathe or recover thanks to the volume, and he doesn’t wear himself out since he doesn’t throw every punch with bad intentions. Watching the Scott Smith fight again almost makes me feel guilty.

exactly. he has the chin and cardio to overwhelm a person standing, and the bjj to threaten anyone from the ground, so they have to think about taking him down. that performance was one of the most dominating clinics i’ve ever seen, almost on the level of diego/ bj

by Neil Manich on Dec 27, 2009 1:52 AM EST up reply actions

good point.

But i think it has less to do with Fedor success then his past. The guys has never said anything ill about an opponent. He’s never even mentioned a game plan for crying out loud. I’m pretty sure he can get away with one tiny obscenity.

by ontite on Dec 27, 2009 1:54 AM EST up reply actions

But it's business. I do photography and I would have so pissed if someone did that.

The photographer has to get the shots for EA. Fedor shouldn’t start being difficult. Great fighter but kinda douch move.

but if the photographer did know anything about Fedor, its that he IS generally expressionless in most of his fights, if he doesnt wince after that kevin randleman slam, im pretty sure he doesnt know how to make a pain face

Look at the bright side.. they got every essential face shot they could for Fedor. His face simply doesn’t change. I think the photographer lacked that knowledge, and kept pestering him.

by ontite on Dec 27, 2009 1:57 AM EST up reply actions

We may be completely ignoring the possibility that Fedor simply couldn’t make a face. He could have tried to make a face for hours and found himself physically incapable. In all fairness its not a skill he gets much practice in.

by Neil Manich on Dec 27, 2009 1:59 AM EST reply actions

As a photographer, what a pain in the ass to have someone be difficult when you already know they don’t want to be there.

As a fight fan, that is so Fedor.
I would just print his same blank expression picture for every expression on the list and say ‘job done’.

It’s been said about a million times already, but why not say it again? Fedor in the ring always looks like he’s waiting for a bus. An impassive, maybe even slightly bored expression IS his fight face.

Once again

well it seems that quite a few people here think that Fedor should do something that is out of his character because he was asked to. His likeness is going to be in the game, why should he change his persona so that the depiction in the game is incorrect? Why should he bow to the wishes of some photographer? Why is he a douchebag if he doesn’t want to do something?

and exited the room while retorting, “we are done here.”

How do we know that he “retorted”? How do we know that there isn’t more to the story?

Seems like a lot of people getting their panties in a bunch over a non issue. If it really bothers and affects you so much, I feel sorry for the tragedies that must befall you every day in life.
