Quote of the Day 2: Fedor Emelianenko - "I Don't Make Faces"

EA has been wrapping up the photo shoots for their upcoming MMA video game. During the sessions, fighters are asked to make various facial expressions such as a look of suprise or pain.HT: graciefighter.com
During Fedor's shoot, the photographer noticed his face stayed the same, devoid of expression. The photographer then asked for Fedor to really try harder at which Fedor replied, "I don't make faces", and exited the room while retorting, "we are done here."

This is one of the most badass things ive heard, but cmon fedor. Rolling out of the photoshoot for the first Video game youll ever be on, he really doesnt want to spread his brand does he?
Has anything Fedor has ever done make you think that he cares about spreading his brand?
by ufc4 on Dec 26, 2009 11:29 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
yes actually. That was the whole reason he signed with SF. By Co-promotion fedor could spread the M-1 brand.
i’m not positive but i believe ufc4 was talking about the “fedor” brand, not referring to his company
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 12:22 AM EST up reply actions
you’re taking it a bit out of context. you are correct, but that didn’t prove your point. fedor believes he is a building block of m-1, and that is why he is appearing in the game. however, i don’t think fedor believes he has to represent his brand by doing stupid reaction faces. his presence in the game is enough.
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 12:28 AM EST up reply actions
your right. him just being in the game is “enough” but isnt that the fun of playing video games, doing things that usually dont happen in real life. EA sports doesnt want to do “enough” they want to be better than THQ.
If by “better” you mean “sell more copies” they might as well give up now cuz it’s not gonna happen.
No, I think by “better” he meant “better”. EA is the world leader in sports games, I’m sure their first offering will feature MUCH better gameplay and less rigidity than Undisputed 2009.
apparently you haven’t played first generation ea sports games on the next gen consoles. it took them three years to get madden right. madden 06, the first installment was horrible. However, NHL 09 and 10, and madden 09 and 10 are very very good. It takes them a bit.

I did read they managed to get a pic of an ‘embarrassed’ look for the game before he left, they just needed to mention him ducking the UFC and it’s fighters.

But it was a total fail because Fedor doesn’t take crap from anyone.
Seriously though Fedor really doesn’t make much facial expressions during fights , what’s the point ? When he’s right he’s right…
Fedor seems kind of like a dick.

aw, sweet!! fedor is the best man alive!!
I don’t understand people… he could kill a baby and people would kiss his feet. I don’t care how ‘badass’ he is, that’s unprofessional, rude ( the photographers is just doing his job) and arrogant.

eh, i agree to an extent, but you gotta respect that he doesn’t give a flyin eff about what anyone thinks.
however, i’ve never seen him make a different face in a fight, so why would they try to impose one on him? He’s just an expressionless guy, and we all know that about him

i’m not a fedor nut hugger by any means, but they shouldve known he was a “dbag” by what theyve heard about him. for them to be surprised by this, the guy seems like an asshole but i think he genuinely wants no part of acting the role.

yup. fedor is stoic. just his demeanor. i don’t know who actually cares about seeing a surprised look in a video game, most of the time i’m too “cloudy” to notice that stuff

Well u know what I’ve been ‘following’ Fedor for quite some time now , if I have to ‘believe’ him or some unknown photographer I’m gonna take Fedor’s side of the story . He never makes ‘surprised’ faces during fights , it would be completely stupid to do that anyway . ‘Pissed’ expressions ? Maybe , not so much . Really , if there’s any fighter who maintains a poker face it’s Fedor , so why ruin it?
I wasn’t thinking suprise, I was more thinking grimacing and other facial expressions that are unavoidable in fighting.

Technically, he’s more susceptible to getting his jaw broken with an open mouth. So if anything, Steve saved him a broken jaw.

I’m just saying that there doesn’t have to be a rule against telling a fighter to shut up
Yes, there does. The refs job is to enforce the rules during a fight, not make shit up as he sees fit.
His job is to protect a fighter.
Jawing off is putting himself in danger. Telling a fighter to stop makes sense, even if there’s no specific rule and the ref can’t warn or take points for it.
I love when fighters talk shit during the fights, mainly because I know that’s how I get during competition as well. Respect before, respect after, but totally caught up in the moment during.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
Fighters do stuff all the time during fights that put them in danger, should the ref have told Bisping to stop circling into Hendo’s power hand?
Your reasoning is relative to saying a person shouldn’t talk during work because it’s not indicated in their job.
i think hes just saying that fighters are allowed to talk shit, and its not the refs place to tell him to stop, mostly because the ref isnt trying to protect the fighter’s jaw, but just to have the fighter shut up.
and if i missed your point ufc4, my bad

Basically, I mean I really doubt Maz was worried about the safety of the fighter in that situation, I think he just wanted him to shut up. And once again, the refs job is to enforce the rules and there is no rule against talking in the cage that I know of.
I’m saying that just because it’s his job to enforce the rules doesn’t mean he’s only entitled to follow guidelines and nothing else.
Fry cooks at burger king chat with eachother, but that’s not part of their job. a police officers job is to enforce the law, but they do their own things.
the only way your comparison would work was if a popo stopped a person from doing something that wasnt illegal. they would be overextending the bounds of their job.

i think i understand what you’re getting at, but the point im trying to make is that when Maz told Diaz to stop talking, it wasnt because he was trying to protect Diaz’s jaw, you can tell by the way he says it Diaz, he just wants him to shut up.
During the Guida-Nate Diaz fight, Nate kept yelling “209 bitch!” whenever he hit Guida and the ref didnt tell him to stop then for his protection

I'm saying it's not baseless.
He has reason to tell him not to talk excessively, it’s putting himself in danger that isn’t directly related to fight technique.
I’m all for a good old fashioned Mazzagatti bash-fest, but we can all think of much more legitimate issues with him. Cain-Rothwell stoppage? What the hell! I was loving that fight, Rothwell was defending himself intelligently (poorly, but intelligently) and he stops it? There was hightlight reel material to be made!

Agreed.
He’d be an irritant if he wasn’t so effing talented. His boxing style is so unique in MMA and difficult to defend because of his incredible conditioning. His BJJ is fantastic, especially against somebody he’s worn down with heavy body shots and pitter patter to the head. His chin and heart are more than respectable. If he works on his wrestling, he’ll be [even more of] a force to be reckoned with at 170 or 185.

rogan loved the term “pitter patter”
but it seems to me that he chooses to throw softer shots from all angles to keep his opponent guessing, and then will steadily increase his power as more and more land, and he is able to find angles.
he landed what, like 250/ 300 shots in his last fight? can’t throw that many for power
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 1:40 AM EST up reply actions
250/400 some I think?
It was insane. More strikes than most five rounders. His conditioning is both inspirational and humiliating to me.
As for his style, he throws a lot of soft shots and mixes power in. When an opponent thinks they can wade through a punch to counter, he turns up the power. When they try to defend their head from the incoming power shot after a few soft blows, he puts power into the body. As soon as the hands drop to defend that, he’s back to working the head. There’s almost no chance to breathe or recover thanks to the volume, and he doesn’t wear himself out since he doesn’t throw every punch with bad intentions. Watching the Scott Smith fight again almost makes me feel guilty.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"

diaz has always been one of my favorite fighters to watch, his cardio is bar-none and his Gomi fight may be one of my favorite MMA fights of all time

yeah that fight is incredible, its a shame it had to be written off the books. the best part is, all wiitnesses said he didnt smoke in the locker room, so the only way his THC levels could be that high would be to eat a pot brownie before the fight

i still remember my reaction when my friend told me that it was written off, “wait a minute…he beat Gomi…and he was HIGH WHILE DOING IT?!” then just shock and awe

So how will this effect the gameplay?
Everytime the Fedor character gets will he just have no physical reaction whatsever?

NO REACTION. It’s eerie.

nice angle
he makes a face, even if it is slight

I’ve seen one picture, where Fedor makes a face while throwing Aoki. It was weird, but kind of relieving.
He was having exhibition emotion.

So the only 2 things that make Fedor smile are Ice Cream and manhandling small Japanese Men?

Had Lesnar or Mir done something like that.... everybody would be all over them.
by snakecharmer1340 on Dec 27, 2009 1:43 AM EST reply actions
Lesnar and Mir haven’t gone 31-1. I don’t know why its so shocking to some people that Fedor has earned some respect from fans. Fedor is awesome so he does awesome things. Yes there is a double standard, as there should be.
Oh I see. Fighters can earn douch points with evey win. haha. ok.
by snakecharmer1340 on Dec 27, 2009 1:47 AM EST up reply actions
i would think so, in the same way that athletes in team sports “earn” calls
by Austin Martin on Dec 27, 2009 1:50 AM EST up reply actions
With sustained success you earn respect. With more respect you can get away with more from fans. You can’t just look at every action in a vacuum. The fact that he is Fedor makes a difference. If your friend calls you an asshole isn’t that different than a stranger doing it?
good point.
But i think it has less to do with Fedor success then his past. The guys has never said anything ill about an opponent. He’s never even mentioned a game plan for crying out loud. I’m pretty sure he can get away with one tiny obscenity.
But it's business. I do photography and I would have so pissed if someone did that.
The photographer has to get the shots for EA. Fedor shouldn’t start being difficult. Great fighter but kinda douch move.
by snakecharmer1340 on Dec 27, 2009 1:54 AM EST up reply actions
but if the photographer did know anything about Fedor, its that he IS generally expressionless in most of his fights, if he doesnt wince after that kevin randleman slam, im pretty sure he doesnt know how to make a pain face

The photographer is just trying to do his job and get the shots.
Btw, It should be interesting to see the game with Fedor having the same expression the whole time.
by snakecharmer1340 on Dec 27, 2009 1:58 AM EST up reply actions
right, but if you photographing a multimillion dollar athlete, dont you think he may act a bit different from a standard person you’d photograph?

a coma patient shows more emotion than fedor.
the two pics of him walking away after the rogers and arlovski KOs are so telling of him. Whereas every other fighter gets amped up from winning so viciously, he just walks away.

As a photographer, what a pain in the ass to have someone be difficult when you already know they don’t want to be there.
As a fight fan, that is so Fedor.
I would just print his same blank expression picture for every expression on the list and say ‘job done’.

who cares??????
He’ll fight and demolish some nobody again and make a lot of money. Then do it again.
He’ll make his money from strikeforce and when they have nothing left he’ll move to the next brand thats dumb enought to give him what he demands. Then they’ll go broke like Pride, Bodog fights and Affliction.

It’s been said about a million times already, but why not say it again? Fedor in the ring always looks like he’s waiting for a bus. An impassive, maybe even slightly bored expression IS his fight face.

Once again
well it seems that quite a few people here think that Fedor should do something that is out of his character because he was asked to. His likeness is going to be in the game, why should he change his persona so that the depiction in the game is incorrect? Why should he bow to the wishes of some photographer? Why is he a douchebag if he doesn’t want to do something?
and exited the room while retorting, “we are done here.”
How do we know that he “retorted”? How do we know that there isn’t more to the story?
Seems like a lot of people getting their panties in a bunch over a non issue. If it really bothers and affects you so much, I feel sorry for the tragedies that must befall you every day in life.

I have made this handy to use guide for them, free of charge:

EA, feel free to use this as you wish.

They should have set up a high speed camera, and gotten Fujita to come in and punch Fedro in the face until he lost consciousness. That would get EA every shot they needed for the game.
Guillotine.
How unprofessional of the photographer
Everyone knows the only way Fedor shows emotion is through the blandness of his sweater!
