Quote of the Day: Josh Thomson Talks Strikeforce vs the UFC
I'm tired of clicking onto websites and seeing the first thing is UFC, UFC, UFC, and I would like to see something that says Strikeforce and something positive about our fighters. Cause I'm getting sick and tired of that.
"It would be nice to see some positive energy in (the media's) interviews. This is a great sport. I'd hate to see the media bring us down by saying negative things.
"When was the last time you seen a UFC fight card put together like this?. When was the last time you saw UFC fighters lay it on the line like we did tonight, and when was the last time you seen a main event like you did tonight? I haven't seen one of those in a while from the UFC. So, I think we delivered."
Josh Thomson talking to MMA Weekly.

This isn’t helping the Strikeforce vs UFC debates. Whenever it gets put out here, it becomes a debate because it is the topic at hand!
It’s whats going to drive popularity to the sport, get more hits to MMA websites, and its pretty much unavoidable.

What many miss is that having debates about fantasy fights between two different promotions actually helps the sport. If Fedor and Lesnar can both go undefeated over their next three fights imagine: First, the water cooler discussions over who is truly the number one HW; secondly. how big will the anticipation and excitement be for such a fight when it finally happens. The same could be said for the Mousasi-Bones Jones conflict of late 2011, or Georges St. Pierre and Jacare at 185.
Thats sounds great and all but...
your secondly is a bit off… he anticipation will be non existent and will rather be a fruitless dream. UFC won’t co promote and for good reason…

Its whats going to drive confusion to the sport, get more people wondering, who is who and what is what

agreed
and i thought i saw a pretty good main event at 107, where they put it all on the line.
I think the better question . . .
is when have you seen an undercard fight in the UFC like the strikeforce main event, because there is no way that this fight is a main event on a UFC card, except maybe a fight night card. The answer to that question is fairly regularly
agree
I don’t fight, but for the sake of argument, doesn’t every fighter, regardless of affiliation, lay it on the line everytime they fight?

I guess not
Apparently it’s like the NFL stigma that a guy is no good unless he’s playing for a contract, and once you’re in the UFC you just don’t care if you win or lose. Geez..

It’s all Kid Nate’s fault.
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
Josh is a company man.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
He should fight Chael "Dana is like a father to me" Sonnen then.

Company man is one thing, but this is crazy talk!
“When was the last time you seen a UFC fight card put together like this?. When was the last time you saw UFC fighters lay it on the line like we did tonight, and when was the last time you seen a main event like you did tonight?
Sorry Josh, but the UFC puts on good shows every month, Great shows over half of the time, and AMAZING shows with frequency as well.
Strikefrorce can put together wildly entertaining shows, but have to use 1/3 of the top talent on their roster to do so. The UFC’s depth of talent makes it sooooo much easier to put on great shows each month.
I enjoyed the SF show last week, but c’mon, 4 main card fights? The UFC (and its little sister, WEC) continue to do monthly shows with 5-7 main card fights (depending on time).
When was the last time you saw UFC fighters lay it on the line like we did tonight
Please GAG ME WITH A SPOON! To think that the UFC fighters have less heart or give less of themselves just because they are in the “big leagues” is absurd. Josh is fun to watch, but he’s talking out of his ass here. For every one Josh Thompson that SF has, UFC has half a dozen Clay Guida’s (just an example). Clay has more entertaining fights, is in the same neighborhood in terms of skills, fights more often, AND prolly wont ever even sniff the LW title in the UFC, when Josh has had (i believe) 3 SF title fights now.
Smith/Le was an exciting fight, I loved it. But if those are your main event caliber guys, then the UFC would have around 20-25 guys that could headline a SF event.

20-25 is actually a really low estimate.

There is no debate
The UFC has the majority of the best fighters, so by default it has the best fights. But at the same time Strikeforce is relavant: they have a sizeable quantity of the top talent, so one can not belittle them by saying they are a b-league and none of their fighters matter. It seems the people that most want to fan the flames of this debate are those that view it as a zero sum game. Either: the UFC is the best therefore Strikeforce is full of second-rate fighters and therefore are not worthy of being mentioned in the same breathe as the UFC; or because Strikeforce has some fighters as good as the UFC fighters (and one who is noteworthy for being better), then Strikeforce has to be elevated to the same plateau in every category. Both are very silly ideas.
Strikeforce puts on meny fewer shows, so i is going to be in the news less. Its kind of an unavoidable fact. This is more mud slinging on Josh’s part. “SHOWS ARE EQUAL, ITS THE MEDIAS FAULT” unless MMASuPreMaCy starts his own fox news style MMA blog, most media does okay.

It’s funny since we paid more attention to Strikeforce than the far superior WEC event that took place the same night.

Great fights are about equality of combatants, not having the greatest fighters.
If two fighters are close in talent, regardless of how that talent compares to the best fighters in the world, then you are going to get a great fight most likely.
Frankly, the UFC has a problem right now. The problem is that they have the absolute best fighters at every weight class, with the outside except of Fedor in HW. Those fighters are also their champions, specifically Penn, GSP and A. Silva, and are so much better than anyone else in the field, regardless of promotion, that they make it look like the UFC is lacking talent in those weight classes…which it isn’t.
What Strikeforce has going for itself if that while they don’t have the same quality of fighters across the board, with some notable exceptions (Fedor, Mousasi, Jacare), their fighters are all very close in skill level and can often produce exciting fights because of that.
Scott Smith is the perfect example. He would never break into the top 5 or 10 in his weight class in the UFC, but he can put on some exciting fights in SF because they have alot of guys that fall into that exact same situation.

That’s a good problem to have.

Josh should worry more about winning fights and staying relevant than about the UFC, simply put swinging away wildly at your opponent isn’t exactly the best strategy when your trying to defend you title.
Josh is still a fringe top 40 guy in his division.

What utter rubbish! Tell me what major MMA site has not extensively covered Strikeforce??
SF has gotten good coverage almost from day one.
And is he really saying Le/Smith was better than main events like Nog/Couture or Shogun/Machida?
Josh, you were classy after your fight, how about a little more of that class here? This kind of stuff makes him sound not only deluded, but whiny as well.
Strikeforce put on a great show. The UFC put on a great show w/ 107. Of course, one was free(mostly) and one wasn’t. The UFC delivered one of the P4P best fighters in the world but they charged you $50 to watch him maul a guy w/two fights at LW. The rest of the card was solid but so was Strikeforce’s and Thompson/mMelendez are legitimate top 10-15 fighters. Yes, Strikeforce had some largely irrelevant fights but so did the UFC. Again, both put on quality cards but the difference in talent-level is real.
To me, it is hard to say one was vastly superior to the other as they really are two different animals. Josh is probably a little defensive because most of the props Strikeforce is given seems to come w/a condition like, “Strikeforce was great but they don’t have the top fighters”. etc. Mainly, people should just be happy there is any kind of competition for the UFC here in the States and be thankful for extra MMA events that are “mostly” free.

What website doesn’t have any news about Strikeforce? Does this guy even have a computer?
Everytime Strikeforce does anything newsworthy, Bloody Elbow (and many others) have it right away, easily findable at the top of the site.
Not to mention the legions of commenters praising their every move.
Head trauma is a helluva drug.
What a punk
I totally disagree. LOL. I think Diego showed more heart in his losing effort than all fighters combined on Strikeforce’s card.
BJ Penn wouldn’t even consider fighting at lightweight in Strikeforce. Why should MMA fans cater to Josh when then post on the net. To be the best you got to beat the best.

The best (and ultimately only) way for Strikeforce to get more publicity is by putting on good, exciting, engaging fights. If every card they put together has a first class war that goes right down to the wire, a few you-gotta-be-kidding-me KOs and something akin to the drama that was Smith-Le, they will get publicity, fans and respect.

When is the last time the UFC signed a 46 year old Ex-NFL Player
When is the last time the UFC HW Champ ran off to another promotion to fight for years at a time? When is the last time the UFC headlined a couple b-level fighters over a championship bout?

Just looking at some of the BE headlines
“Progressive Thinking Could Propel Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza to Greatness"
“Long-Time UFC Sponsor Condom Depot Has Been Banned by Zuffa”
“Rudy Valentino Accuses GSP of Steroid Use”
“FieLDS Dynamite!! 2009 Fight Card”
More positives for Strikeforce than for the UFC in those posts.
Wow.
It’s the MMA news, they report as it happens and can comment. They also have Hughes talking shit about Strikeforce a few stories back. Sample size fallacy ftl?

Um it’s an article about a guy saying no one ever writes positive articles about Strikeforce or their fighters and there is at least one article on the front page that does just that(so far this week there have been several) thus it works just fine to show that Josh Thompson just doesn’t read enough MMA sites if that is what he thinks (the Hughes bit was a fan post not an article).
and I would like to see something that says Strikeforce and something positive about our fighters. If he had read BE this week he could of seen a bunch of positive things, you don’t need to fit some kind of random sample size to fill the criteria that he laid out.
