Late Night Fights: Scott Smith v. James Irvin

Apologies for the feature's absence the past few evenings.  I'm not going to run it over weekends just due to schedule conflicts with any live events.

Anyway, tonight we go back to February 12, 2004 when a 5-0 Scott Smith stepped into the cage to face James Irvin who had gotten his career off the ground with three straight wins.  The fight took place at a Gladiator Challenge event and was contested at heavyweight.  Irvin is now a light heavyweight and Smith is a middleweight and the size difference is quite clear in the cage.

Fun fact for the event: Dan Quinn (of insane internet ramblings about Stevia) picked up his third career win at the event with a submission victory over Adrian Perez.  Adrian Perez is, of course, the guy with King of the Cage tattooed on his face who last fought in 2007 after his record had tumbled to 2-11 (he was finished 11 times).  The win brought Quinn's career record up to 3-3-1.

Anyway, on to the fight:

Is it the angle or does that cage seem small?

by Kefka on Dec 22, 2009 12:11 AM EST reply actions

That cage was definitely small.

If you watch some of the early KOTC shows from the late 90’s and early 00’s the cage was about as BIG as a phone booth.

Irvin looked huge. Smith looked soft.

by xDieseLx on Dec 22, 2009 12:16 AM EST reply actions

soft

is being very polite. like a dough boy is close

by dugmouth on Dec 22, 2009 1:01 AM EST up reply actions

Crazy to think Smith fought HW.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Dec 22, 2009 12:18 AM EST reply actions

I actually thought that Smith was gonna KO him after Irvin rocked him

by IRodC on Dec 22, 2009 12:18 AM EST reply actions

1. Was that Herb Dean reffing?
2. That cage is smaller than the one my dachsund sleeps in.
3. Those 2 guys are the exact same fighters today they were almost 6 years ago.
4. You spelled Scitt Smoth wrong.

Adrian Perez is, of course, the guy with King of the Cage tattooed on his face

I would like to see a picture of this. (Yes, I tried Google image searching “Adrian Perez,” “Adrian Perez King of the Cage,” etc.)

Type in king of the cage face tattoo.

Its a bald dude with flames on his head and face.

I didn't think it was possible

But he somehow made face tattoos worse than they already were.

by asa on Dec 22, 2009 7:22 AM EST up reply actions

Dan Quinn is blending Stevia into pure H2O right now.

by scrambledeggs on Dec 22, 2009 12:47 AM EST reply actions

Irvin is a middleweight now, too

Well, he's said he is

But hasn’t actually fought at middleweight because of his constant state of injury.

I finish beers at 1:55.

by ihateemo on Dec 22, 2009 6:13 AM EST up reply actions

Doesn't matter

He’s already been scheduled for fights at 185, meaning he’s a middleweight.

On a related note. I don’t know about back then but, I believe they train together with Genyao Fairtex.

Yeah dude, this was before they joined up.

by N. Rodriguez on Dec 22, 2009 2:18 AM EST up reply actions

Irvin wasn’t a big dude. Memmer, he made his UFC debut at Heavyweight.

Scott Smith is one of my favorite fighters. He seems like a hard nosed bad ass, but soft spoken and with a gentlemanly-ness to his self.

by mightyhokie on Dec 22, 2009 12:28 PM EST reply actions

How about..

we never use the word ‘gentlemanly-ness’ again.
