Matt Hughes Predicts the Imminent Demise of Strikeforce

Hank_mccoy_college_years_v2_0_by_nmrosario_mediumThis Fan Post was promoted to the front page by Nick Thomas.

Matt Hughes updated his blog, and it looks like he's frustrated with the way Strikeforce handled Robbie Lawler's situation. He also thinks Strikeforce is bound to fold soon. Why? He says Showtime will be their downfall:

Last week I was in California with Robbie, Pena, and Foster, hoping they would find a replacement so Robbie could fight. It didn’t happen and I guess I’m just spoiled being with the UFC. From what I understand, Showtime really likes to stick their nose in Strikeforce’s business and because of that I don’t think that Strikeforce will be around for much longer.

Matt also blogged about Renzo Gracie:

Been some talk about Renzo and some people are wondering why I would fight him. I think he is a very formidable opponent and I would say he is the best of the Gracies. I don’t think it would be fair to compare him to Royce. Renzo and I have some history as he is the last guy to beat Pat Miletich and I have beat a couple of his students. I beat Ricardo Almeda back in Abu Dhabi and I just got done beating Matt Serra. Both motivating reasons for us to fight each other. One thing I’ll say about Renzo is that he is one of the nicest guys out there, but that won’t stop me from keeping myself motivated and doing my job. It was great to get with Matt Pena last week and start working on some things. I already know what to stay away from on the ground.

UPDATE via WatchKalibRun:

Recent Strikeforce acquisition, Melvin Manhoef, has agreed to fight Kazuo Misaki at  Dynamite!! 2009 Dream vs. Sengoku on New's Year Eve.

This report throws into doubt the rumors that Manhoef would fight Robbie Lawler on January 30th at Strikeforce in Miami. There is also a rumor that Robbie Lawler is not thrilled about the prospects of fighting in January as it is near the delivery date for his now pregnant wife.

Eh it’s Matt Hughes, he’s always grumpy about something. Now if Robbie Lawler has similar comments about what is going on then maybe I’ll take notice.

Actually, anytime Hughes writes a blog he’s usually in good spirits and it’s something positive in his life or about something else.

sadly i think hughes is right i just dont see how strikeforce is gettin the cash for all their expansions and i dont think a cbs show every 6 months is gonna cover it

by milk72 on Dec 22, 2009 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

Who knows where they are getting the cash, but maybe CBS or Showtime is giving it to them, I really don’t know though. I was surprised to see the payrolls for the Strikeforce Evolution card because most main card fighters got some pretty good money. My guess is that Showtime or CBS is footing the bill. They could also be in the red right now with hopes in the future that they will the losses back up. Personally, I think that it is WAY too soon to predict Strikeforce’s demise because there aren’t enough big indicators to show that they are going down. Yes, there are things like Overeem not fighting or this Robbie Lawler issue, but there isn’t anything that is huge and glaringly obvious like EliteXC or Affliction did that would show immediate demise.

Keep in mind

Strikeforce basically has a home arena. The live gate ALONE was more than enough to cover the fighters reported payroll.

-EXC folded because they wasted all their capitol purchasing feeder orgs (Sprint, KOTC, Rumble on the Rock,ETC.) and they had excessive executive overhead.

-Affliction folded because they were paying figters far in excess of what they could afford to pay them. They over-estimated what they could do on PPV

Strikeforce doesn’t have any of these problems. By all accounts they are a streamlined business with less than a dozen full time employs.

Not every Strikeforce show happens in the HP Pavilion at San Jose nor does Strikeforce just get to keep all the money. Their owners also owning the arena is of great advantage to them but that doesn’t mean there are no expenses associated with the arena nor does it mean that every show makes money. They really do pull in great numbers in San Jose and have been historically smart with their money but it’s the rapid expansion from a regional promotion to a top tier national promotion where the real expenses are going to start racking up.

Now i am not saying Lawler comments would be the same as Hughes but lawler and Hughes are pretty dam tight and best of buddies. I would think Lawler feels the same also if Hughes is saying this ? What ever the case may be its kind of sad Strike Force could not find some opponent in the world of MMA to fight him ? They were talking about it the other day on the Jordan Breen show and Jordan was right there are about 1000 journeymen in the midwest alone wh would step in to take this fight to try and make a name for them self, Kind of sad strike Force cold not give Robbie a payday no matter who the opponet was becasue it would of not been to hard to find one if they wanted ?

Pobobly not a good idea to have your trainer predicting your promotions demise. I don’t think Robbie is winning any points w/ SF.

Matt Huges Foresees Strikeforces Demise

I sort of like how loyal Hughes is to his friend.

On the other hand, he sounds like one of those old ladies that sees Jesus in a plate of spaghetti.

What a coincidence, just this last week I happened to see a visage of the Flying Spaghetti Monster in my plate of pasta.

This is not the first person I have heard say that Showtime has the final say on many things.

so who is robbie going to fight ? scott smitth again? I would be pissed too if strikforce keeps signing talented BJJ stars to middleweight when I train with matt hughes. frustration.

Robbie Lawler vs. Matt Lindland/Cung Le/Tim Kennedy to name a few, you act like Middleweight is their shallow division…

LOL that drawing is awesome. But on topic:

SF really messed up here. Robbie spent thousands of dollars on training, not to mention all of the stress that probably put on his family life, only to have his chance to earn pulled out from under him just a few days before the event.

Dare I say it, but if the UFC pulled something like this a lot of people would be screaming to high heaven. Funny thing is, the UFC had a similar situation occur recently with Karo and Dustin, but they paid Dustin his show and win money.

One of the biggest issues that may start to happen is if all of SF’s top guys all jump ship after they finish up their contracts. Jake Shields is one dude who has said he will probably leave (although right now he isnt really that valueable to SF seeing has he isnt exciting and they need exciting fighters). Oh well i guess this year is the make or break year for the promotion, look forward to a good year of fights from them.

Gotta feel bad for Lawler. All that training for nothing. Hughes is right, he’s spoiled by being the UFC where he gets more than 2 weeks notice as to who his opponent will be…

Hey weo,

Got any idea why Nate Rosario has all those Matt Hughes pics labeled as Hank McCoy?

Because those pics are not of Matt Hughes but of the Beast AKA Hank McCoy, from the X-men. Apparently he modeled him after Hughes but it’s the Beast. The drawing of him grappling with Iceman, AKA Bobby Drake, gives it away.

Gotcha…Thanks for the info. I thought it was strange that he was wrestling a superhero.
