Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

The Week in Quotes: December 13th - 19th

via www.hookedonmma.com

DOES THE FEMALE FORM MAKE YOU UNCOMFORTABLE, MR. LEBOWSKI?

"I was like, 'Wait, what? Are you breaking up with me?'" - Former UFC ring girl Logan Stanton, let go by Zuffa this week. (MMA Fighting)

"Just to come straight up with nothing leading up to it? They didn't give me any warning; they didn't tell me why." - Stanton.  Foreplay, gentleman, it's important.

"We do it all the time. We let Edith (Labelle) go earlier this year, too." - UFC President Dana White, failing to mention they had to send Edith to the glue factory. (Las Vegas Sun)

"I don't think I want to publicly talk about why people were let go. (Logan and Natasha) are both great girls and I have nothing against them. It was just time to move on." - White.

"I was definitely upset but at the same time, I was never going to make a career out of being a ring girl." - Stanton, after having a chance to collect her thoughts.  Just another Zuffa employee complaining about their pay.

"Going into it, I told the UFC that this is how I am and that I wasn't going to get fake boobs. I think they tried it out for a bit. Me and Natasha were the friendlier ones and I think now they want something sexier and curvier." - Stanton.  Speak for yourself honey.  I enjoy your nerdy look as much as the next guy, but to call Natasha lacking in the curve or sexy department?  Really?

Star-divide

PACIFISM IS NOT SOMETHING TO HIDE BEHIND

"I don’t want to fight Jake Shields because he has no personality." - Former Strikeforce middleweight champ Frank Shamrock. (Fight! Magazine)

"And when he got on to CBS, and it was his chance to be a star, he leg humped [Jason "Mayhem" Miller] all night long and killed our ratings." - Shamrock

"All I can think about is working my way back to earn another shot at B.J. Penn." - Diego Sanchez, dropping Tony Robbins for the Frank Mir motivational teachings. (Twitter)

"Or do they want me to fight a 'super fight' against somebody in Aloha Stadium, and do they think they can sell 40,000 tickets by putting me in against a Gray Maynard, or do they want me up against a bigger name?" - UFC lightweight champ B.J. Penn, who still wants a third fight with Georges St. Pierre.  Stock in maple syrup rose a half point. (Honolulu Advertiser)

CONDOLENCES.  THE BUM'S LOST.

"It's sad to say that somebody with five fights can be looked at as somebody who's going to put somebody in trouble with 30 fights. I just don't understand what sport these people are watching." - Mike Whitehead, upset at being looked over in his fight with "King" Mo Lawal. Whitehead lost by TKO in round one. (Cage Writer)

"Sure, he's overpowered a couple of Japanese guys he was a lot bigger than. Other than that, he hasn't done anything. He overpowered some guys that he was bigger than, stronger than and more athletic than. These Japanese guys had no wrestling whatsoever." - Whitehead.  Note to self: Travis Wiuff is Japanese.

LOOK, PAL, THERE WAS NEVER ANY MONEY.  THE BIG LEBOWSKI GAVE ME AN EMPTY BRIEFCASE, SO TAKE IT UP WITH HIM, MAN.

"That report is completely false. Thiago is 100 percent and he’s busy preparing for this fight." - Thiago Silva's manager Alex Davis, on rumors that Silva has an injured ankle and is being compensated by Zuffa to not pull out of an already barren fight card.  Who would expect a fight camp to admit an injury PRIOR to a fight? (MMA Junkie)

"Not only has the UFC not paid any extra money for Thiago to fight through an injury, but to the contrary, in my 10 years of dealing with the UFC, (matchmaker) Joe Silva and the staff have always said it’s better to pull out of a fight if you’re hurt rather than lose a fight because you’re injured." - Davis

STAY AWAY FROM MY SPECIAL LADY FRIEND

"Mir is a Multiple time Champion, who has been counted out more then Mike Tyson to only find himself right back at the top. He is a LEGEND of the sport and I would be honored to fight him." - Shane Carwin, interesting personality. (Shane-Carwin.com)

"I couldn’t argue against that. Carwin is a phenomenal match-up, and I think if I can’t fight Brock again to show that I’ve made improvements against that style, I think Shane Carwin is a more than an ample substitution. If anything, I think he’s a better version." - Former UFC heavyweight champ Frank Mir, never shy to take Brock Lesnar down a peg or two. (MMA Weekly)

PARTING SHOTS

"After all, only one man saw me naked in my entire life and I have to think deeply about that." - Strikeforce women's champ Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, with a quote that won't surprise anyone.  Though, she poses, I'm buying.  OK, I'm downloading.  But same thing.  (Sherdog)

"I’m almost totally recovered, thank God the recovering is going pretty fast." - UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva, who's recovery correlates with his ability to makes cash money. (Tatame)

"These sites provide us with a tool to take live streams down. But for our last fight, there were 160,000 streams going." - Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta.  Pretty impotent tool. (CNBC)

"There could be an opening in a month; there could be an opening in about three years." - NSAC executive chairman Keith Kizer, on the re-licensing of John McCarthy. (MMA Fanhouse)

"Leave the kid alone. He made a mistake. We're all human, we make mistakes." - Dana White, on Tiger Woods.  If fornicating with numerous beautiful women is a mistake, I don't want to do anything correctly again. (MMA Mania)

BJ does have a point

as much as I dont want to see BJ-GSP 3 if the UFC wants buyrates then the better option is a superfight than Gray Maynard.

I seriously don't see the need to pile on here,

but she is clearly one of the least attractive ‘women’ I’ve ever laid eyes on. Not saying she’s a 1/10, but she’s no higher than a 3 in ANY book.

If you’re turned on by her fighting prowess, that’s great. But let’s not try arguing she hits the average mark. She falls way short.

Ultimately, that doesn’t matter. She’s a fighter, and a good one. The world needs the Gina Carano’s to be the face of a particular movement, but in the end we need truly bad-ass fighters. Cyborg is a truly bad-ass fighter, and I’m happy to watch her fight whenever I’m able.

She trained for a week in my gym before ADCC this year, with werdum and a couple more (my gym is were Fabricio used to teach when he lived here in Spain) and I agree, she is not pretty, but she’s not as ugly as she looks in most photos. Ah, oh boy she can fight.

They split us in 2 groups, heavier guys for fabricio and lighter for her and she basically run everybody over. The woman’s one hell of a fighter and she’s truly dedicated

that’s all that matters

btw, everybody should watch her training videos on youtube and compare them to Carano’s, it should be crystal clear why she looks so massive while Carano is still centerfold material. She basically trains harder than most dudes.

Yeah for a man of Tiger’s stature he should have been nailing runway models or movie stars.

It was not bad for the average joe to be nailing porn stars, cocktail waitresses and whatever else they were, but for a billionaire golf legend he should have a higher quality of women on his plate.

Also I thought his wife was hotter than any of them.

The rules don’t apply to the staff, I don’t know why people still have trouble understanding this.

They’re trying to pass themselves off as legit journalists. They’ve petitioned to get press credentials for UFC events. They have a higher responsibility than us, not a lower one.

I don’t know why people still have trouble understanding that.

by kurdtdk on Dec 21, 2009 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

He has a responsibility, and this is how he chooses to use it.

If someone reads this and takes offense, HE has to deal with it. If someone takes offense to something anonymously posted in the comments, HE has to deal with it, that’s why he doesn’t have to play by the rules.

by Phildo on Dec 21, 2009 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly, the site owners have to take responsibility for the content of the site one way or another, so I believe they are doing the right thing by strictly moderating user comments.

Just for the record, though, I agree with kurdtdk that kind of commentary is quite uncalled for and not humorous at all.

"I want to tell me what you see, let's go ahead and see by in the fight, what you saw, in the ring." - Tito Ortiz

by CasualMMAFan on Dec 21, 2009 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

This is very flawed logic and reasoning.

Take a look at CNN’s website. They have many opinion pieces posted, with a full unmoderated comments section. Some of the comments there are the most racist, ignorant, conspiracy fueled gems you will ever find.

Do you really think anyone in their right mind would attribute what “Sara from New Jersey” said to Anderson Cooper’s personal stance? Do you think Larry King gives a damn what “Cleatus from Alabama” wrote at the bottom of his article?? No, because anyone in a position to take this person seriously as a journalist knows exactly what a ‘comments’ section is. So the argument that users comments have to be moderated so they don’t unfairly reflect poorly on the author is just ridiculous.

Particularly when the author goes and flagrantly violates the rules he helped put in place anyway, and does a fine job of coming across poorly all on his own! So now instead of just looking like an insensitive jerk, he instead looks like an insensitive and hypocritcal jerk.

by kurdtdk on Dec 21, 2009 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

Do you really think cnn’s comments are unmoderated?

This is how mma websites work. People get pissed at sherdog.com because of what goes on in their forums, people get pissed at BE because of their comments.

There is a difference between anonymously bashing someone and putting your name on it and bashing someone. when it’s your name and your website you can make whatever rules you want.

by Phildo on Dec 21, 2009 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

Take a look through the comments on that site and tell me if you really think they’re moderated. And even if they were, that does not take away from the point of that post at all. Don’t ban something if you’re just going to do it yourself. It’s like the cop that flips on the siren for fun to fly through a red light, then two blocks later pulls over someone at a stop sign for only doing a rolling stop at an empty intersection.

And it seems like your focusing on a very small part of my problem with this article, ie Edith bashing when others are banned for it.

I have a much bigger problem with his comments in regard to Logan being “just another Zuffa employee complaining about her pay”. This is just irresponsible journalism at it’s finest. Nowhere is this said, implied, or even hinted at, and by all accounts is the exact OPPOSITE of what happened, and to suggest that this could have been part of the reason that she was let go is flat out sloppy and disgraceful.

Worst by far, however, is his comment regarding Terry Shiavo. In all honesty, who would have even thought to drag her into a “world’s least attractive woman” contest?? Seriously, if I heard a grade school kid say something like that I would tell him to grow up and show some basic human decency…Mike’s a grown ass man, what’s his excuse?? Maybe he should sit down quietly for just a little while and think about what others would have to say about him if he were to hold himself open for all to see in a public forum.

by kurdtdk on Dec 21, 2009 4:24 PM EST up reply actions

I’m ignoring that stuff because I don’t give a crap about that stuff.

You can disagree with what he’s saying, that doesn’t change the fact that staff members don’t have to follow the rules when they are making posts, that’s the way it is.

They can ban someone for doing it and do it themselves because they have to deal with the consequences that come from saying them, while anonymous posters don’t (beyond getting banned).

by Dooda on Dec 21, 2009 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

You actually think that?

All sports (well not all, golf, bowling aren’t in this category) go hand in hand with good looking girls. I think the opponents of MMA are not looking at the few seconds the girls are visible as fuel for their hate fire. I think they are more concerned with the aggressive combat nature of the sport.

While you’re at it, do away with all cheerleaders, dance squads, any form of advertising featuring an attractive woman, etc etc etc etc.
