KenFlo on Cover of The Improper Bostonian

The current issue of The Improper Bostonian features Kenny Florian on the cover.  The article, by Michael Holley, is pretty interesting as KenFlo discusses how training has impacted his life, for better or worse.

Referencing Florian's last fight, with BJ Penn, Holley writes, "It took Florian a week-and-a-half to steel himself to watch the fight footage, and when he did, he saw it alone with no volume.  He briefly considered retirement, but instead he parted ways with one of his trainers, Mark DellaGrotte, while sticking with Montreal trainer Firas Zahabi.  DellaGrotte has since complained about tension in the gym between himself and Florian's brother Keith, who remains on the team as an advisor."

The article recounts Florian's rise to fame, admiration for Royce Gracie, and his life before becoming a professional fighter.  A very interesting read about KenFlo.

He's an ass

He threw Mark Dellagrotte under the bus in that article…. so much for loyalty. Don’t forget that you got to where you are because of Mark, dude.

Do tell? I haven’t read the article, so I’m not sure what was said.

it was a very subtle bus throwing

not an exact quote but something like, “my bro always has the best interests for me as a fighter others didn’t thats all im going to say”

I haven't read it

But i imagine a situation like that wouldn’t be about a lack of loyalty, but one party (his brother) out weighing the other (Dellagrotte) in that department, which is understandable. Maybe not the right thing to do, but when it comes time to take sides it would be hard to go against family.

I’ve never heard anything good about Keith Florian. Maybe people closer to that camp can say otherwise, but that’s been my experience.

FYI – here’s Keith Florian in a BJJ match against Lucas Lepri:

Everything you hear about Keith is pretty much true…. I’ve been around the camp a long time. Although he’s never been a jerk to me, I’ve seen first hand how he uses Kenny’s fame to use for his own personal gain… the DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM syndrome

I’m not going to get rid of this comment because it would end up getting rid of all of the comments, but there’s a simple rule around here: no pejoratives against fighters. The comment about KF being an “ass” wasn’t necessary.

Sorry

I know both Kenny and Mark personally so I took it personal when he thew Mark under the bus after all that Mark’s done for him… my bad….

Why would he consider retiring after the BJ fight? He did well enough…

But congrats on getting the cover of IMPROP kenny’s head STONIAN

Kenny might have questioned his own willingness to make another run at the title after failing in his first two attempts. He may also have some wear and tear on his body that we don’t know about.
