Renzo Gracie Signs Six-Fight Deal With the UFC (UPDATE)

The interview is in Portuguese, so unless you speak the language you're going to need this quick translation by BloodyElbow readers, Orcus and ZephyrBrasil, highlighting the main points of the the interview:

-He says he signed for 6 fights

-When asked about his age, he said "age is in the eyes of the beholder, 42 is the new 30!"

-He insists that Matt Hughes will be his first opponent and the score will be 1-1 for Hughes vs Gracies

-He says this will be the first time he’ll fight at his true weight class.

-They said they aren’t supposed to say it but they say its gonna be Matt Hughes (its not 100% established at 1:53) because he wants to settle the score

-The rest are jokes about how this female reporter, who is the best one in Brazil for MMA, chased him down to get the info.

It is interesting that Renzo Gracie (13-6-1) also got a long term contract, which basically means that he will be with the UFC until he retires. Also, Renzo, who has been fighting at 185 for most of his MMA career, will likely be dropping down to join the UFC welterweight ranks.

When I spoke with Renzo a few weeks back, he mentioned that the UFC wanted him to fight Hughes for his second fight, and while it still isn't final now, these statements seem that they might skip that and go straight to Hughes vs Gracie (Sorry Matt Brown).

I guess the only thing we need to know is, When?

UPDATE: Here's a better translation from Tatame:

“It’s signed. They wanted three fights, but I said six. If I’m doing it, I’m doing for real (laughs)”, the Gracie said, revealing who might be his opponent. “It’s Matt Hughes, everybody knows. I believe it’s gonna be him. It’s not 100% yet, but I’ll collect some debts”, said, remembering Hughes’ victory against Royce Gracie, at 2006. “Let’s tie that score”

He’ll never see 6 fights in the UFC and Hughes would pound Renzo into the canvas.

you won't see 6 fights from Randy or Hughes either..

They’re just locking them up until they retire, (as what’s said in the post)

Yeah I get that about Renzo, but Randy I’m not so sure about fought in August, November and coming back in February. That’s a pretty active schedule as compared to how often Renzo and Hughes have fought the last couple years.

by scrambledeggs on Dec 2, 2009 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

Wow this fight is going to truly suck. Renzo’s not a scrub but Hughes will take him down and do nothing on top. It will be a repeat of the Serra fight.

Meh, not looking forward to seeing him get in there.

Off topic, really cool new avatar, Anton.

Isn’t Renzo the linear champion of one of the UFC’s titles?

He’s the linear LHW champion.

If you do a linear title change on a DQ and count the Shamrock fight even though it was at 185 and not LHW, then yep.

by JRN on Dec 2, 2009 11:22 PM EST up reply actions

linear champ?

what is that?

It is similar to MMAth except with championship belts. For example, Sakuraba had his own belt, hereafter referred to as the ‘Sakubelt’, which he lost to Wanderlei Silva. Wanderlei then lost the belt to Mark Hunt who lost it to Josh Barnett who lost it to Cro Cop, who then lost it to Fedor. So that means that Fedor is the linear champion and owner of the Sakubelt.

Linear belts are also created when a fighter leaves an organization as the last recognized champion which, and I may be mistaken, Frank Shamrock and Bas Rutten both did with UFC belts at some point.

It is uncouth for us both to rub it in. I withdraw my remarks, but only because the twitter posts are brilliant….

by Jonathan Snowden on Dec 3, 2009 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

What he told you wasn’t true. The plan was always for him to fight Hughes.

by Jonathan Snowden on Dec 3, 2009 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

As I tried to tell you (and others) at the time, just because Renzo believed something didn’t mean it was true. The UFC never intended for Renzo to fight anyone other than Matt Hughes from the moment they decided to sign him. That’s the fight he was signed for.

okay.

I’m sure you guys have great connections and sources.. All I was saying is, that was what Renzo told me.

by Anton Tabuena on Dec 4, 2009 1:09 AM EST up reply actions

It’s cool. Like Jon said, sometimes the fighters are the last people to know. Shane Carwin, for example, has heard about his fights being canceled/postponed three times from me instead of from the UFC. It’s not a good thing and it’s something they are actively trying to fix.

Well I just found it weird that he said “they told me it’s for my 2nd fight”, He also linked to a post about it on his twitter.. if it was true that it was never planned like that.. It’s either the UFC changed their mind, or that they lied to him?

by Anton Tabuena on Dec 4, 2009 2:53 PM EST up reply actions

I didn’t know the UFC gives out life sentences.

Weird. Out with solid prospect Rosholt…..in with…..Renzo???? Its not even like its Kimbo slice and he’ll draw heaps of viewers or everybody wants this fight. I dont know why they would sign him.

by GeeDub on Dec 3, 2009 3:16 AM EST reply actions

uhh. they aren't mutually exclusive you know..

it’s not like they kicked out Rosholt to make space for Renzo. what are you talking about?

by Anton Tabuena on Dec 3, 2009 3:42 AM EST up reply actions

I dont know why they would sign him.

Because he’s RENZO. What is the matter with you?
