The Curse of Cain

It all started when the UFC dissed rising star Cain Velasquez.  Cain was scheduled to fight fellow prospect Shane Carwin for a shot at Brock Lesnar's UFC Title.  When the UFC pulled Carwin from the fight, awarding him an immediate title match instead of making him earn it, UFC fighters began dropping like flies.

Lesnar is out, at first possibly forever, then indefinitely, then six months, with an injury that morphed from cancer to the swine flu, to mono, to hepatitis, before finally settling on irritable bowel or something. Losing Lesnar, their top star, would be bad enough. But he was just the highest profile. Heavyweights, not coincidentally Velasquez's weight class, were the hardest hit. Todd Duffee pulled out of a fight with Paul Buentello at UFC 107 with an undisclosed injury. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira got staph. Shane Carwin decided to rest a bum knee. And Gabriel Gonzaga, set to fight Nogueira's protege Junior Dos Santos at UFC 108, also fell victim to staph.

For the UFC, it could have been much worse.  Originally, there was to be another event in January, a SPIKE special from Dublin.  This would have been disastrous for Zuffa, already stuck promoting shows no one believes are worthy of the UFC name.

Instead they will trot out Rashad Evans-Thiago Silva at UFC 108 and Randy Couture-Mark Coleman at UFC 109 and pretend they are real main events, instead of merely attractive feature bouts for the second from the top slot. If these shows flop, don't blame the matchmakers. It's the curse of Cain that caused the chaos.

The Curse of Cain

Maybe Cain has simply risen up to and beyond Anderson Silva’s level. Confused? I’ll explain.

When Silva fought Patrick Cote, he actually struck the challenger only a handful of times. In round four, Cote’s knee crumpled. Many cited unfortunate footing for the cause of the injury, but I know better. In reality, Silva’s powers have grown so strong that he was able to obliterate Cote’s knee using the power of his mind. That’s right, Silva’s powers transcend the mere physical. He can now destroy you with only his mind.

But Cain? His powers appear to be vastly superior to even Silva’s. Silva was able to destory Cote and, arguably, Forrest Griffin using the power of thought. Conversely, Cain has laid waste to an entire division’s worth of contenders and its champion, all without so much as having to set foot in the Octagon.

Well, he also whooped that ass when he was in the Octagon with Rothwell and Kongo.

The moral of the story is that no one is safe from the awesome power of Cain Velasquez. Get your tin foil hats ready.

I did a long interview with Cain, but this was before I learned of his supernatural powers. When it comes out, it will be sorely lacking any “Curse of Cain” content. :(

You personally interviewed Cain? You should get a full battery of medical tests done.

Don't forget Heath Herring, Cains once scheduled opponent when he fought Kongo

It’s not surprising, though.

It’s what he gets for killing Abel.

And yet, he comes out of this unscathed. Perhaps, just perhaps, Able had it coming?
