What Chance Does Matt Hamill Have Against Jon Jones?
This fight has "groom Jon Jones" written all over it. Don't be fooled: a "grooming" fight is not one where the outcome is all but decided before the bout itself. Rather, it's one where a rising prospect is tackling a manageable but clear challenge. In this case, a decorated wrestler unafraid of Jones' wrestling with moderately threatening striking:
But when Hamill knocked out Mark Munoz with a single kick to the head at UFC 96 in March, there was no hiding ‘The Hammer’ anymore, especially since you will probably see the ending of the bout on highlight reels forever. It was the first clean knockout of Hamill’s career, but one that didn’t immediately register when he landed the finisher.
"I didn't know he was out until the referee stopped the fight," said Hamill. "It was my first knockout."
It was also the first real sign that Hamill’s standup had started to catch up with his wrestling, a testament to the work he’s been putting in the gym over the years.
"I’ve been working on standup more than wrestling," he admits. "I'm trying to be a well-rounded fighter."
...
"This is Jon’s biggest test and he's probably working harder than ever to keep his unbeaten record," said Hamill. "I will show him a real fight, and it will be a good fight, I can promise that."
As for the prospect of dealing with the unorthodox moves Jones has made his reputation on thus far, Hamill gets right to the point: "my trainer and I have been working on a few things."
Let's be clear: Hamill's attached to fundamentals. Less so in his wrestling as he is able to improvise, but the rehearsed, almost too textbook striking of Hamill's will be his undoing. His lateral and forward movement is often slow, which allows opposition to create angles or adjust positioning. He also allows his opponents too much reset time, which against a brash, explosive striker like Jones is going to be a death sentence.
The longer this fight stays on the feet or more particularly at range, the quicker it ends. Hamill should not be counted out. He is very capable of winning here. But at 33 and with limited upside at this stage in his career, it's clear the UFC wants to use his existing talents to test the next stage of blue chip prospects.
I don't know if we'll see flying colors, but Jones should pass this test.

I don’t know who will win this fight but it is safe to say when people are asking “What Chance Does Matt Hamill Have” that he’s being seriously underestimated.
There’s a huge hype train behind Jones based off his previous exciting fights but some times the hype clouds our judgement.

he’s being seriously underestimated.
QFT, I like them both but to pan on Hamill seems like a huge mistake. I don’t think we know enough about Jones yet to automagically give him the nod in this fight. I expect Hamill to be the spoiler here.
Who is automatically giving him the nod?

The only way I see Hamill winning with his plodding, wading in style of striking is if he can wear down Jones in the clinch, and execute in the late 2nd/3rd round. Bonnar showed that Jones doesn’t have the greatest gas tank, so that’s the real question in this fight.
Hamill has to defend the onslaught of crafty striking before that can be a thought.

The issue with his gas tank may be an isolated incident. Do you recall how Shogun’s cardio was questioned after his horrible Coleman performance?
This should be a great fight.

Doesn’t seem very isolated to me. He gassed against both Gusmao and Bonnar. Moving to Team Jackson should make him better conditioned I suppose since Tri Star Gym is also in the fold, but we’ll find out if this goes into the later rounds.

I love all the people saying Jones is gonna lose just because he has so much hype. Two things-1) the vast majority of these people probably wouldn’t be willing to bet a nickel of their own money on Hammill and 2) They’ll be nowhere around when Hammill loses to admit they were wrong.

I'll be around if/when he loses
but I’ll to be busy crying to admit I was wrong.
Would have liked to see the Vera/Hamill fight though.
all of you predicting hamill to be the spoiler...
…time to be disappointed. jon jones is the next big thing baby.
i’ll go out on a limb and predict that greg jackson and crew decide the right strategy is to plant hamill on his back, and pound him from his guard.

ha! Too bad the referee doesn’t have the advantage of instant replay.

Hamill
only because Jone’s gf is about to have a baby. We hear it all the time “I gotta do this for my family.” Then after getting beat, “my mind was not in this fight.”
Hamill has a solid chance to take this fight, sure jones has destroyed his past opponets but really he has not fought any one who is really relevant any more, Hamill will be his first real test in the division. With that said Jones has all the tools to take out Hamill and can do so rather quickly unless hamill has worked on speed and throwing punches with more snap. Hamill did not fair to well against rich franklin and jones may not have the same technical abilities as Rich but he has more explosiveness. Interesting fight can’t wait
Jon Jones may be the next big thing but......
This fight has “huge upset” written all over it.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
Except that it really wouldn’t be that big of an upset if an upset at all

How so? Because Jon Jones has too much “hype”?

Houston is a better bet, I’m going to double my money.

Houston is my second, smaller bet. Then a Houston + Jones parlay. Those 3 bets combined are all my money — first time I’ve done that.
Parlays are evil, Satan invented them. After losing money consistently I don’t do parlays anymore.

I’m no angel, but I was always the kid who snitched on the kids who had pot. I don’t want to offend the pot smokers out there, but I was kind of just a snitch. I was just down for people doing the right thing. My parents kind of raised me to be a good guy. I’ve always been down for the good side, I guess.
Damn, I hope ’Ammel puts a beating on this kid!
Just to quantify the reach:
Matt Hamill: 76 inch reach
Jon Jones: 84.5 inch reach
Hamill’s striking is too slow to close this gap and connect.
I’ve read where Semmy Schilt’s reach is 83.5in, making Jones’s even more impressive.

i’d bet on hamill for an “upset”. esp. seeing how the odds shape up for the betting lines.

I saw matt hamill roll with Rolles Gracie, and a couple of other guys from the Gracie Academy..
He got a lot of takedowns on Rolles, but wasn’t able to do much passing or subs.. But the guy has tremendous cardio. He out worked everyone there. He kept on rolling with different partners until they got tired, but Matt just kept on asking to do it one more round.
PS
He got tapped by a girl once. (not that it’s such a bad thing to get tapped in practice)
