Strikeforce Results: "King" Mo Lawal Flattens Mike Whitehead in Less Than One Round

Photo by Dave Mandel via Sherdog

"King" Mo talks a big game, but has thus far backed every bit of it up.

The "Team Thirsty" member took his time with a Roy Jones Jr-esque style of low-lead hand poaching. He stuffed all takedown attempts from a seemingly prepared Whitehead, but as color commentator Frank Shamrock pointed out Whitehead continued to leave his rear right hand low. Using superior athleticism, Lawal fired a one-two looping shot that connected dropping the Wanderlei Silva-trained Whitehead. From there Lawal followed up with punches on top where he shut Whitehead's lights out.

It was a dominating performance against a legitimate test at this stage in Lawal's burgeoning career.

Let the haters hate. Lawal is looking like a ferocious challenge for anyone.

The referee stops the fight 3:08 of the first round.

Nice win over an expereience veteran. But I’m not going to lie, Whitehead looked like fat and out of shape. Still, Mo did what he had to do, and looked crisp and sharp doing it.

I guess I’m going to be one of the haters…i wasn’t all that impressed with King Mo. Whitehead looked horribly fat and out of shape. His takedown attempts were poor.

King Mo’s striking didn’t look all that good either. But I give him credit for having some power in those hands. But Whitehead was just awful tonight. Solid win on Mo’ record though

Are these guys "out of shape"

Roy Nelson, Brett Rogers, Mighty Mo, Fedor.. Just because you dont look like your in that good of shape doesnt mean you have no gas tank.

First of all Roy is one of the rare exceptions of someone looking TERRIBLE and actually being in good shape. Rogers and Fedor shouldn’t even be compared to Whitehead. You could look at Whitehead and Fedor/Rogers and clearly see the difference. Not to mention Whitehead fought at 205 his last fight and he weighed 262 for this fight. There’s no way you could say that man was in great shape for this fight. That was my main point

Yeah, those guys always look like that, and have for years. Whitehead doesn’t usually look like that when he fight, so something was definitly off.

Dont you think that people can get fat while keeping there cardio? Ive seen it at my gym. Granted you lose some reflex ability, quickness, and even sometime some power but the gas is still there.
