WEC 45 Donald Cerrone vs Ed Ratcliff: Live Results and Commentary
As with every major show, BloodyElbow.com will be here to bring you live results and commentary for WEC 45: Donald Cerrone vs Ed Ratcliff. The live blog will start with the beginning of the Versus broadcast (at 10PM ET) so make sure to make Bloody Elbow your home for this event.
As always we have our one rule: NO SPOILERS! In the interest of not ruining anything from the undercard that may make the broadcast we ask that you do not discuss the results of the undercard in the comments until either the broadcast ends or the fight makes the air.
SPOILER REMINDER #2: Since we have two major MMA events being broadcast live tonight, do not discuss the on-going action or results of Strikeforce fights in this live-blog. The same will go for discussion of WEC fights in the Strikeforce live-blog.
So again, join us for the show and share your thoughts as the event unfolds.
Hey guys, it's Scott H filling in for Luke on the LiveBlog tonight. I'm looking forward to what should be an action-packed night of fights!
Alright, folks...we are live on Versus for WEC 45! First fight coming up shortly.
Takeya Mizugaki vs. Scott Jorgensen
Round 1: Herb Dean gets us started. Jorgensen catches Mizugaki with a knee that stuns him and grabs a guillotine, but Mizugaki squirms out. They clinch and Mizugaki seems to have regained his senses. Knees from the clinch by each fighter. Trading positions against the cage, Mizugaki goes after the body of Jorgensen with short punches and knees as the clinch continues. Jorgensen grabs a leg and takes Mizugaki to the mat, but they scramble back to their feet quickly. Now off the cage, both men throwing bombs, but Mizugaki putting together some nice combinations with body shots. Jorgensen cracks Mizugaki with a big right hand and jumps into his guard dropping bombs. Jorgensen moves to half-guard and now takes the back looking for the choke, but Mizugaki stands and spins into Jorgensen on the feet. Both men throw hands as the round end...10-9 Jorgensen in my book.
Round 2: Jorgensen looks more confident as the round starts. Mizugaki still swinging hard, but Jorgensen counters with a nice tackle into Mizugaki's guard with Mizugaki working his butterfly guard and then back to his feet. Mizugaki breathing hard as Jorgensen pins him against the fence throwing knees to the body. The two back to trading body shots and knees in the clinch. Herb Dean separates them, and Mizugaki catches Jorgensen with some of his combinations but a head kick is blocked...another takedown by Jorgensen but again Mizugaki springs back to his feet. Jorgensen with some nice dirty boxing that connects, and some blood leaks from Mizugaki's nose now. More clinch work against the fence as Herb urges the fighters to work...they oblige with bombs being thrown by both. Another explosive takedown by Jorgensen but Mizugaki again proves difficult to hold down. Another 10-9 round for Scott Jorgensen.
Round 3 - Jorgensen barely looks tired at all and he again attempts to wrestle Mizugaki to the mat but settles for the clinch. Mizugaki throwing fewer combinations and leaving his chin wide open now as he wings wild, looping punches at Jorgensen. Mizugaki leaps in with a stiff jab but Jorgensen slips it. Mizugaki again gets thrown to the mat and the two scramble for position and end up on their feet, but now Mizugaki takes Jorgensen down and moves to half guard. Mizugaki struggling to pass Jorgensen's guard and he does, moving to side control. Jorgensen gives up his back and ends up in a crucifix, but reverses beautifully and gets back to his feet! Mizugaki with another takedown and moves to side control but he's not very active with the position. Jorgensen reclaims half guard as Mizugaki drops some heavy leather now as the final round comes to a close. I think the takedowns were enough to earn Mizugaki the round 10-9, but I'd still give Jorgensen the fight 29-28. It's a unanimous decision for Scott Jorgensen, 29-28 across the board.
It's announced that recently dethroned featherweight champion Mike Brown will make a quick turnaround and fight at WEC 46 in January against WEC newcomer Anthony "Mean Machine" Morrison.
Joseph Benavidez vs. Rani Yahya
Round 1 - Kim Winslow the referee for this one. Benavidez with his hands up high. Yahya actually throwing hands for once, and a leg kick as well...Benavidez countering well, but he gets caught briefly by a right hand from Yahya. Yahya patient, not charging for a takedown yet. Benavidez clocks Yahya with a wild overhand right and follows him to the ground with brutal ground and pound...Yahya's lights appear to go out and Kim Winslow saves him... this one is over! Joseph Benavidez defeats Rani Yahya via KO in the first round.
Some prelim action now...Brandon Visher vs. Courtney Buck
Round 1
Buck with a stiff body kick but Visher answers with some heavy leather. Buck catches Visher with a left hand, but Visher recovers and slams Buck down into side control. Buck keeps Visher tied up, but Visher doesn't seem interested in passing out of side. Visher lefts him up and lands some more heavy punches, but Buck stays upright. A leg kick from Buck stumbles Fisher. Buck goes back to the front kick as the two take a moment to settle themselves down. A hard right hand from Visher rocks Buck, but he manages to avoid the following head kick. Buck's hands are low and as Visher slips, Buck tries to grab a gullotine. Visher shrugs out and moves to half guard. Visher drops some short elbows and moves to mount as Buck offers little defense on the ground. Buck gives up his back and Visher starts unleashing some punishment...Buck lazily rolls over and Visher lands a brutal forearm/hammer-fist that makes Buck go limp as Mazzagatti rescues him! Brandon Visher defeats Courtney Buck via KO in round 1
Anthony Njokuani vs. Chris Horodecki
Round 1: Steve Mazzagatti gets us started. Njokani exploit his huge reach advantage, pawing at Horodecki with a hard jab. Horodecki throws his 1-2-kick combo but Njokuani knows it's coming. Vicious knee to the body by Njokuani as Horodecki clinches him against the fence. Horodecki looks for a single against the fence but Njokuani sprawls well. Back off the fence and Njojuani lands a body kick, but takes a hard uppercut from Horodecki. Fast counter-punching from both men. Horodecki charges in for a double but Njokuani reverses into mount. He lets Horodecki up and smashes him with a huge head kick as Horodecki turns his back and retreats! Some follow-up ground and pound finishes Horodecki off. Horodecki made a huge mistake in turning his back when he got to his feet. Anthony Njokuani defeats Chris Horodecki via TKO (head kick and punches) in Round 1
More prelim goodness!
Brad Pickett vs. Kyle Dietz
Round 1: A wild head kick misses for Dietz and an accidental eyepoke grazes him as Pickett tries to counter. Pickett catches a head kick and slams Dietz down. Pickett in Dietz's full guard...Dietz throwing elbows from the bottom and trying rubber guard a bit. Pickett careful as Dietz goes high with his guard. Dietz throws some big upkicks as Pickett postures up and falls back into Dietz's guard. Dietz very active from the bottom with more elbows and an armbar attempt. Another upkick lands on Pickett's chin as he tries a flying pass but settles for full guard again. Pickett having difficult posturing up as Dietz controls his arms, but he now manages to rear back and throw a big left hand. Now Pickett passes and tries to grab a guillotine as Dietz scrambles to his feet. Pickett framing up a triangle with Dietz on top. The round ends with Dietz in Pickett's high guard. Tough round to score, as Pickett had the takedown but did little with it. Dietz was more active with elbows from the bottom, but I'd still give it to Pickett 10-9 for control and the submission attempts at the end.
Round 2: Both fighters clock each other with huge shots but Pickett manages to get Dietz down to the mat! A good short elbow from Pickett and another as he works from Dietz's guard. Pickett postures and lands more short elbows. Dietz working rubber guard but he gives it up. Pickett lands more stiff shots from above and passes to half guard. Dietz scrambles out but Pickett drops back into his guard. Body shots from Pickett now. Dietz much less active from the bottom than he was in the first round. Dietz's corner wants him to use the cage to get back to his feet but Pickett traps him against the cage and cinches in a Peruvian Necktie! It's tight and Dietz taps! Very slick sub! Brad Pickett defeats Kyle Dietz via submission (Peruvian Necktie) in Round 2.
Donald Cerrone vs. Ed Ratcliff
Round 1: Herb Dean in charge of this one. Cerrone charges right in and grabs a body-lock looking for a takedown. Ratcliff throws Cerrone down and lets him stand back up. Good leg kicks from Ratcliff and another buckles the leg of Cerrone. Ratcliff moving in and out nicely with his jab and the leg kicks. Cerrone charges in again but gets caught in a Thai plum. He slips out but Ratcliff has double underhooks against the cage. Ratcliff tries a quick foot sweep and then throws a rapid-fire combination that clips Cerrone. Cerrone throws some knees to the body but Ratcliff lands a 1-2 as he breaks out of the clinch. Ratcliff catches a kick but Cerrone comes over the top with a big knee to the face. Now Cerrone returns the favor with a hard leg kick of his own. A big body kick from Cerrone backs Ratcliff up. Cerrone tries to grab the plum and a knee lands low on Ratcliff as Herb Dean stops it for a timeout. We're back in action now and Cerrone looking much more aggressive with body kicks in succession, but another knee lands to Ratcliff's groin in a flurry. Cerrone is warned again but still no point taken. Side kick to the body from Ratcliff and both men swing wildly, but Cerrone gets Ratcliff down with a single. Cerrone tries to grab a guillotine but the round ends. Great action despite the low-blows...Cerrone started slow but he came on strong later and got the takedown and near-guillotine, so I'll give him the first round 10-9. EDIT: There was a point taken from Cerrone for the low blows, so I'll change that to 9-9.
Round 2: Ratcliffs leaps to avoid a high kick. Slick combo from Cerrone finished off with a leg kick. Things slowing slightly in Round 2 but still good action. More leg kicks and body kicks from Cerrone keeping Ratcliff at bay. A knee barely misses Ratcliff's chin. Ratcliff with a stiff counter right hand, and now for the third time he gets caught with a knee below the belt! We're back and Cerrone throwing some big high kicks, chasing Ratcliff around the cage. Cerrone leaves his hands at his waist, showing no respect for Ratcliff's striking. Ratcliff takes Cerrone's back standing after a clinch and Cerrone works for a kimura to defend, but he loses it and pulls guard and now looks for a triangle and then an omaplata, and now the five-finger guillotine! Oh my, Ratcliff was getting choked out but the round ends! Another 9-9 round as Cerrone dominated, but had the point taken yet again.
Round 3: The crowd chants Cerrone's name, and Ratcliff tries desperately for a takedown as he gets hit with some more vicious blows by Cerrone. Cerrone reverses into mount but Herb Dean says he grabbed the fence to get there, so they're stood back up. Cerrone drags Ratcliff to the ground and tries for the rear naked, and now a reverse triangle, and holy shit: a kneebar/triangle combo! Somehow Ratcliff escapes, but he gets dragged back down and Cerrone has the rear naked choke...Ratcliff shows tremendous heart in fighting it but has to tap! Great fight! Cerrone knew he had to finish after the point deductions and absolutely had his way with Ratcliff on the ground, but "9mm" just wouldn't go away until the very end.. Donald Cerrone defeats Ed Ratcliff via submission (rear naked choke) in Round 3.
As usual, the WEC delivered big-time tonight. A three round war, some sick knockouts, a Peruvian Necktie, a reverse triangle-kneebar and a great finish from Cerrone..overall a fantastic night of fights! Goodnight guys!

Anyone watch UFC Best of 2009?
Pretty cool show except for the fact that they said UFC 100 happened on January 31st. Fail.
ME! BANE!
My brother has DirecTV..
So no Versus! But I get Showtime in HD Free for 6 months. So I’m going to catch WEC when I get home on the repeat.
Reasons to watch WEC over Strikeforce:
1 Ever seen a dull WEC event?
2 Le and Thompson are coming off 18+ month layoffs, could get ugly
3 Matt Lindland is really boring except when he loses
4 Whitehead came in 40lbs overweight
5 Ground striking isn’t neutered in the WEC (elbows)
6 Meat Skeletons
7 Frank Mur’s commentary (no Torres tonight, so it’s ok)
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
The only Showtime that matters: Anthony Pettis @ #WEC45

hes fought at least four times on the wec cards now

I knew he always looked like that
just never heard exactly why. I have a short attention span and tend to miss the commentary when I key in on the fights. Normally helps me know whether Miguel is actually looking good or Mir is echoing in my head.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"

Story of the fight so far:
Mizugaki is slowly remembering where he is.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
I forgot who Mizugaki went five rounds with...
was it Miguel Torres? Where did it happen again?
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
How many rounds did it go?
I keep forgetting. If only they would remind me more!
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
You're missing the joke...
I know the records, they just keep saying “…back during his five round war with Miguel Angel Torres in Chicago!” over and over again.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
Ahhhh, well then. I’m watching this and Strikeforce, and the noise from my computer is overpowering the noise from the TV
Haha, no worries.
Like I said above, I usually don’t even recognize the commentary, just hear that there are people talking during the fight. Trust me, if you watch this again later (legally DVR’d of course) you’ll hear it and laugh. He’s trying so hard to remind us of that fight when they reaired it during the Best of 2009 show right before this. They also never mention his Curran win.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"

WEC 46 looks fantastic. But Mir was hilarious on those two fighters with tough names to pronounce.
ME! BANE!
I was at a welcome briefing for a company, the head of physical security was listed: Miguel Torres.
The kicker? The guy doing the briefing was named Mike Brown.
Guillotine.

She ran in to stop it too early, but by the time she could get in front of Benavidez it probably wasn’t early.
Guillotine.
Yea, I think that’s why at first I thought it was too early. But he did go limp on the replay.
by MMAWrestling on Dec 19, 2009 10:53 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah.
The way he hit the ground was reminiscent of Koscheck-Thiago. Not quite as bad, but definitely went out and woke up when he hit the floor.

Njokuani it seems like is going to have trouble putting everything into his punches/kicks. You can tell he wanted to laugh whenever he thought about what Hordecki looked like.
by MMAWrestling on Dec 19, 2009 11:10 PM EST up reply actions
I made a snap bet of like $60 on Njokuani at -200. Hope he comes through. If not my bad for betting guys that I don’t know enough to handicap.
Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.
I think he is a good bet in this fight
but wouldn’t have put more than $20 on it. He’s a much more technical striker, but can get worked by guys with a strong ground game. I don’t think Horodecki can provide that sort of challenge. Keep in mind that Njokuani’s only losses are BHendo and and Cerrone.

Yeah. That was my first thought. Rewound to watch again. Holy balls. In the slow mo you see Horodecki recognize the kick is coming and barely have enough time to show fear.

Great im going to be banned now.
Accidentally posted ‘Oh man what a kick!’ in the Strikeforce thread.
At least I tried to follow up by claiming it was the Absolut Vodka providing the kick.
Hey at least I tried.
I dont intetionally try to do anything jerkish on here, especially breaking the rules.
Hopefully theyll understand. Or maybe just a warning? I dunno, I closed the Strikeforce window until WEC is over.
Can you flag your own comment and ask for deletion?

Ratcliff just looks outclassed in striking
He lacks the kicks to compare with Cerrone and they are keeping him out of range for effective striking

Ok, right.
I would have been impressed with that, even if he used a 1-2 nutshot-eye poke combo to set it up. It’s like Cerrone was thinking “I wonder if he can breathe when I do this? I’ll hit him in the face to see if that- oh hey, a leg! Imma pull on that and see what happens…”

I’m sure Horodecki is just pissed at himself for making such a stupid stupid mistake
That head kick was excellent.
