Nick Diaz vs Marius Zaromskis for Strikeforce Welterweight Title in January

Diaz_zaromskis_medium MMA Weekly has the story:

MMAWeekly.com has learned that Nick Diaz and Marius Zaromskis have verbally agreed to a welterweight battle in the Jan. 30 event's top slot, set for the BankAtlantic Arena in Sunrise, Fla. The two will fight for the promotion's vacant welterweight belt.

This is a great matchup between the popular and formidable Diaz and Zaromskis who has won his last three straight fights, including the DREAM welterweight GP semi- and finals, with dramatic head kick KOs.

But as always with Nick Diaz there is an additional element of drama -- will he pass the necessary drug tests to get his license to fight? Happily the fight is scheduled to take place in Florida rather than California:

Diaz, 26, has long been an outspoken advocate of marijuana and apathetic about a recent CSAC memo that said fighters with medical permission to use weren't exempted from commission standards on illicit drugs.

...

The Florida State Boxing Commission, which oversees mixed martial arts in the Sunshine State, prohibits performance enhancer and narcotic use, but does not have any bylaws addressing "compassionate use," nor does it require a pre-fight test for "drugs of abuse," a label which marijuana often falls under with athletic commissions.

this is awsome

Strikeforce is getting better and better. I can remember being only vaguely interested in their cards which seemed meaningless in the big picture. But these latest fights have lots of relevancy (gegard, fedor, etc).

What happened to Jay Hieron?

This match is a great matchup. With Diaz wanting to box more and Zaromskis having that one kick KO power (and great standup ability as well), this could be a fantastic standup war. I feel that Jay Hieron got shafted here though because I know that he was scheduled at one time to fight Diaz for the Title.

by chrisbboy82 on Dec 19, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

he sure did

Hieron has earned a good fight and a great payday with all he’s had to put up with in the last couple of years.

Zaromskis is looking mighty lean in that picture.

If Marius head kicks Nick Diaz to a ko…he is the truth…this may let us see how Marius fairs if it goes to the ground against a top shelf bjj black belt

has nick diaz ever been ko’d?

by longevity on Dec 19, 2009 10:19 AM EST via mobile reply actions

he's lost by TKO twice

once was because of cuts against KJ Noons. The other was against Jeremy Jackson way back in the day and was a true stoppage.

This is so awesome. If thing stay standing, its going to be a short night for Diaz and his love taps.

There, I fixed it.
I’ll believe Diaz fights when I see him touch gloves giving the Stockton Salute from across the cage.

no, but every sentence out of his mouth is about a title shot, and he wasn’t able to fight diaz when he was scheduled to.

by woooburn on Dec 19, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I know what you mean. I also saw awhile back an interview with Jay after the Diaz fight fell through and he was saying he only wants big fights from now on and he signed with Strikeforce at a time when they really only had Diaz and Joe Riggs at 170.
He also said the money offers from Strikeforce and the UFC were the same so you tell me that Hieron is only interested in big fights when he signs with Strikeforce to fight at 170 which is their weakest division. Not exactly a wise move.

by scrambledeggs on Dec 19, 2009 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

the UFC didn't want him

since he’d already signed with EA Games.

That's bullshit for him

Nick Diaz, as much as I love the bastard, is an unreliable commodity. Hieron is a damn-solid fighter who deserve his second shot at the spotlight. He’s come through time & again and gets repeatedly screwed.

This is a great fight but

I’m a little outraged for Jay Heiron. He signed with Strikeforce on the promise that he would get an immediate title shot. How’s that working out for him now?

Pretty ridiculous if you ask me

They probably told him he gets winner, but I’m sure he’d like to fight sometime soon.

This is an epic 170 battle? 185?

Hard to say.

I’ve heard rumors of Zaromiskis using PEDs but I guess if he passes a drug test it’s not true. Right? :)

Hands with feet behind them are fairly common. However, feet with hands behind them executed THAT crisply and fluidly are a thing of beauty.

don’t get me wrong, i love all mma, i’m a little partial towards UFC. that said, strikeforce co promoting with dream in itself is a great thing, but if zarom wins the belt what are the chances of strikeforce having another champion not locked down ala overeem? this is why i despise co promoting, the belts become a joke.

Zaromskis is signed with Strikeforce

This isn’t so much as a copromotion as Strikeforce utilizing its nonexclusive contracts.

Alistair is signed with SF too

That obviously doesn’t mean a whole helluva lot.

by swells2048 on Dec 19, 2009 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

I can't believe this fight is happening.

This is a great fight. I thought Diaz was done fighting at 170.

by Td9d on Dec 19, 2009 2:03 PM EST reply actions

No, he fought at 160lbs for Elite XC. That cut........

drained him too much so he is done fighting there. Welterweight is where he fought when he was in the UFC. He is back to his best fighting weight in my opinion. He obviously had two catch weight fights for Strikeforce at 180lbs against Scott Smith and Frank Shamrock. He took care of those guys as if they were nothing. Nick is going to break Zaromskis’ will in this fight. We are talking about a 5 round title fight where Nick’s endless cardio featuring endless punches is just going to be too much for Z-man. I’m thinking in the 3 round, similar to Nick’s fight against Scott Smitt, an exhausted and frustrated Zaromskis gives up on the stand-up, falls over onto Nick in an ill hearted take down attempt and then is submitted any way Nick wants.

Don’t fool yourself folks……………Nick is about to make some easy money. He is going to take Zaromskis’ head to the bank and cash it in.

Would be a KO, but Zaromskis threw a soccer kick too early and got a yellow card.

So after the restart, he threw one punch that cut his eyebrow.

by grein on Dec 19, 2009 8:01 PM EST up reply actions

Nice match-up, but Jay did just get completely screwed over.

by Lynchman on Dec 19, 2009 4:57 PM EST reply actions

Wow

Hieron signs with Strikeforce on the pretense that he’ll get an immediate title shot. He is scheduled to face Nick Diaz, who pulls out because he loves smoking marijuana, screwing over Strikeforce and Hieron in the process. Hieron, already promised a title shot, wins an additional fight over Jess Taylor in a replacement bout due to Diaz pulling out. Strikeforce suggests they don’t know what to do with Diaz because they can’t count on him and some even say they may cut him completely. Mariuz Zaromskis signs with Strikeforce. He has zero fights with the promotion and is getting a title shot, and people shit the bed because Vitor is getting a title shot in the UFC at 185 after one fight at 195 pounds. Nick Diaz is his opponent and is rewarded with a shot at the title after essentially no-showing his last shot.

You’re too reasonable, Jay. Go smoke some weed and punch a hooker.

by Blackout612 on Dec 19, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions

I understand Mariuz getting an immediate title match, but I thought for sure they would have wanted a Hieron/Diaz (or Heiron/Riggs if they couldn’t trust Diaz) fight to crown a Strikeforce WW champion first. That way they would have been able to hype a Zaromskis fight as a champion vs champion unification bout.

by John Nash on Dec 19, 2009 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, and never-mind the fact that Hieron was promised a title fight and got screwed by Diaz last time and now seems to be getting screwed again.

by John Nash on Dec 19, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

I mean, this is the real point— the rest are just supporting facts. I love Marius and would have been just fine with him fighting some can and then fighting the winner of Diaz/Hieron. There’s really no way to excuse how Hieron is being treated in this scenario.

Somewhere, Jay Hieron just kicked a small child.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
