Alistair Overeem Update: No Strikeforce Until After April, One More K-1 Fight

Promoted from the Fan Posts by Kid Nate.

Cross posted from
Head Kick Legend

After speaking with sources inside of Golden Glory, there is an update on the story of Andrei Arlovski's camp claiming the fight they were offered was against Alistair Overeem. With all of the rumors about Overeem that float around, the Golden Glory camp assures Head Kick Legend that the fight between Alistair Overeem and Kazuyuki Fujita was being negotiated weeks before the K-1 World Grand Prix on December 5th. Bas Boon himself chose Kazuyuki Fujita as the opponent for Overeem, citing Alistair's rather intense schedule recently, including the World Grand Prix where he fought Ewerton Teixeira, knocking him out in just over a minute, then having an intense showdown with Badr Hari, where Hari ultimately scored the TKO victory. With fighting 5 fights within two months, Boon thought an opponent like Fujita would be a better fit for the run-down Overeem.

Since Fujita was the hand-selected opponent, the idea is that K-1 could have contacted other possible opponents in case Fujita did not accept the fight, but Golden Glory and Alistair Overeem did not have any negotiations with Andrei Arlovski for a fight.

As for the future for the Demolition Man, Boon states that there is one more fight on his contract with K-1, which will take place in March or April. Alistair will take off the few months after the Dynamite!! show (which is well deserved) before his K-1 bout in the Spring. What this means to fans in the US? Fedor Emelianenko has a bout scheduled in April for Strikeforce, and the heavy rumor has been Alistair Overeem will be the man involved; Alistair Overeem will not compete in Strikeforce until later 2010. So the hopes of Alistair Overeem facing Fedor Emelianenko on CBS are once again put on hold. We have been assured that Alistair has not chosen any of his opponents, Golden Glory management has been "carefully choosing" his opponents, Alistair will fight anybody, anywhere, anytime.

Bas Boon has assured Head Kick Legend that Alistair Overeem will fight in Strikeforce in the United States in 2010. Quote; "Prepare America, Alistair is coming, 2010 will be the year of the Dutch cyclone, demolition time in the US!"

Well at least it should give Fedor another likely highlight finish before he fights Overeem. That should help Fedor build an even bigger following with audiences who still aren’t all that familiar with him.

Barring any bar fights or failed drug tests

SF sets up Werdum vs Fedor for the April show (supported by Mousasi & Hendo) followed by Fedor (unless Werdum pulls a crazy upset) and Overeem for late 2010 title fight.

With the talent pool being so shallow, is the only other option Werdum followed by…an M-1 sponsored Herschel Walker funeral?

by LikeTheWhiskey on Dec 18, 2009 11:09 AM EST reply actions

This seems likely.

Who knows what will happen with Arlovski, now. Seems like he wants a piece of Overeem, too.

he needs to be stripped of his title. Or atleast have Fedor and Werdum fight for an interim title.

The tone I got from Bas..

Was that they are reigning in Alistair. If it were up to him he’d be fighting weekly, they understand the kind of cash cow they have on their hands (Boon mentioned all of the marketing and sponsorship offers they’ve gotten since the WGP), so they feel they need to hand select his career.

Yeah Sure he will fight for Strike Force after April 1st ? what excuse, injury K-1 or Dream fight will pop up then ? Just strip him already this is getting crazy

by Shocbomb on Dec 18, 2009 11:36 AM EST reply actions

I do think they should strip him of his title. Regardless of the reasons, if he cannot defend his title he should not have it.

Alistair vs Fedor is an interesting match up but in looking at a good amount of alistairs losses,it seems like he is succeptible to loopy punches and we all know how Fedor throws. Wouldn’t be surprised if this ends via tko/ko by Fedor despite Alistairs super hero like size

by longevity on Dec 18, 2009 12:13 PM EST via mobile reply actions   1 recs

It wasn’t going to be Fedor and Alistair in April anyway. That fight will be Fedor vs. Werdum. Coker hoped to have Alistair on the same show in order to build up to a Fedor/Alistair fight, but they were not fighting each other on that show.

by jbotter on Dec 18, 2009 12:14 PM EST reply actions

It has been on and off.

Coker has changed his mind on that a lot. I think since the show was announced he has known Overeem would not be fighting Fedor, but as of November they hadn’t made up their mind on who Fedor would be fighting.

As of right now, the plan is Fedor vs. Werdum. That’s the word I got just a few days ago.

Yeah I can buy that

I’m sure Boon/GG have told Coker there will be yet another delay in the arrival of Overeem.

I’m totally OK with Fedor/Werdum and think that is their only option. Plus Werdum has CBS exposure.

Leave it to me to come up with the perfect solution

Have Fedor fight the winner of Mir/Carwin for the Intetim Unified Strikeforce/UFC HW title. Then later in the year we can have Brock vs Overeem for the Unified Strikeforce/UFC HW Title. All this leads to early 2011 when – wait for it – we unify the Interim Unified Strikeforce/UFC HW Title and the Unified Strikeforce/UFC HW Title.
Wow. I can’t wait.

In this last K-1 tourny I think Overeem his head of steam. I just don’t think he hangs with top 15 HW.

https://twitter.com/mmarocks_pl

by Venom77 on Dec 18, 2009 1:11 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think Semmy is the best pure striker, I think his size has a lot to do with his success. That isn’t to take away from his ability, as he does have skill. His form is sloppy and not very varied. He has no clue what to do when somebody gets within firing range of him. The way to beat Sem Schilt is get in close and use angles, yet he never learns how to defend this tactic.

He wins his fights using his giant legs to push his opponent back into a corner, then unloads a knee to their head.

Badr Hari is incredibly well balanced, technically. His main problem is his mental game.

Head Kick Legend
Twitter @HeadKickLegend

by Dave Walsh on Dec 18, 2009 1:39 PM EST up reply actions

Hari also has a weak chin and is easy to hit. His defense is sometimes really poor and that’s what Overeem capitalised on last year.

As for Semmy’s sloppy form, it’s not ballet, it’s fighting. You depict it like it’s quite easy to beat him. IMHO it’s much easier to catch Hari, who is reckless and often abandons any strategy.

As for striker/kickboxer debacle, it doesn’t make sense. Semmy has his size, Hari has his speed and balance, they both were born with it, but somehow only Semmy’s size is treated by many as some kind of “unfair advantage”.

http://www.mmarocks.pl
https://twitter.com/mmarocks_pl

by Venom77 on Dec 18, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Nah, it isn’t an unfair advantage at all, it is what makes him him. Just like Badr has his speed.

I’d say both have a weak chin, if you catch Semmy, you catch him. Badr is just prone to getting emotional and brawling ala Manhoef. I think Badr will eventually mature and become the best in the world in kickboxing, until then it is Semmy.

Badr is still technically tighter in execution.

Head Kick Legend
Twitter @HeadKickLegend

by Dave Walsh on Dec 18, 2009 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

Don't agree

Semmy was much tighter executing Hari in the WGP. I think he mastered his jab and front kick to a perfection. The way he dropped Bonjasky with 1-2 also showed how much he improved his hands.

At the same time I wouldn’t call Hari’s wild reckless hooks tight. I think people make too much of his “pleasant to watch” style, which IMO is not that technical.

/I hate talking about technique in English/

Semmy won the WGP 4 times , comparing (or breaking , I don’t remember) the record of Enrensto Hoost , and 3 of these wins were consecutive… you can’t really be any better than that.
Hari is still very young though , he has tons of time to improve …I also think he didn’t take Overeem as seriously as he should’ve the first time.

Did you not see him blast Ewerton Teixeira into la la land ? WTF he lost to one of the best kick boxers n the wqrld in Badr Hari. Like on poster said above no shame in that what so ever. If anything Overeem has surprised most on how good he looks in K-1. And lets not forget it pays much much more then MMA.

by Shocbomb on Dec 18, 2009 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

How much does it pay actually ? I never get to see what K-1 fighters make . I doubt they make more than Brock Lesnar or Fedor though…

by JoelMan on Dec 18, 2009 3:58 PM EST up reply actions

It is about sponsorships with K-1

K-1 gets monster ratings in Japan and the show aired in 150 countries live on free TV (well, cable in some places). The money they were able to get from sponsors is HUGE.

Think about Badr Hari, who is sponsored by Kia Motors.. Are ANY MMA fighters sponsored by a motor company like that? Harley-Davidson does UFC shows, but don’t take up the main sponsorship for individual fighters.

I am hearing that Overeem shouldn’t have a problem fighting in April if Strikeforce wants him to since he only has 1 fights left with FEG and his fight with Strikeforce to defend the belt would be his priority. Now, the question is whether Strikeforce wants to put them on CBS. From what I have gathered, Strikeforce may want to save Fedor vs Overeem for an end of the year PPV in 2010, so even if Overeem fights in April, they want to re-introduce him to the American crowd as the Strikeforce HW Champ.

Like anything else I write, take it with a grain of salt.
=)

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 18, 2009 2:07 PM EST reply actions

This is what we’ve learned lately

1. They plan on Alistair fighting for Strikeforce sometime in the 1st quarter of 2010
2. Alistair won’t be fighting for Strikeforce until after April
3. Fedor will be fighting someone on CBS in April. His opponent will be Overeem, or Werdum, or someone else
4. Barnett might fight Fedor under the Dream banner early next year
5. Werdum might fight Arlovski

Hope that clears things up.

by John Nash on Dec 18, 2009 2:26 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I think they should really just stop talking about it until they have something set in stone.

First it was after the K1 tournament, then first quarter, now April. Every time they talk they push back the date and allow people to get disappointed. Just shut up until a fight is actually scheduled. If you determine before March that April isn’t going to happen, don’t say anything until it’s time to actually announce the April card, there’s no point in getting everyone disappointed earlier than needed.

You’re right. It’s even more ridiculous that they aren’t letting Fedor fight for the Strikeforce title. Who is a more deserving challenger for the title shot in Strikeforce? Way to legitimize the title Coker…

by MMAWrestling on Dec 18, 2009 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

They are building up the fight for a year end mega fight, possibly PPV for Strikeforce between Fedor and Overeem. They wan’t to give Overeem one fight on CBS before that to inroduce him to the US audience.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 18, 2009 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

So you are saying their original plan was to have their HW champion beat up on some can while Fedor fought Werdum?

Yeah … that sounds awesome.

How silly would it look to have the #1 contender for the belt main eventing while the champion gets to beat the crap out of some guy who has no business being in the cage with him earlier on the same night? How would that reflect on the legitimacy of their HW title? It would be like the UFC having Carwin-Mir main event while Lesnar defended the title against Antoni Hardonk earlier on the same card.
