Report: Dan Henderson vs Jake Shields on Strikeforce's April Show on CBS

46605069_medium

According to FiveKnuckles.com, Dan Henderson (25-7) is likely to make his debut against Strikeforce Middleweight Champion, Jake Shields (24-4-1) on the planned CBS show this April:

Newly signed Strikeforce superstar Dan Henderson is in "end stage" negotiations to face Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields at the organizations next CBS event in April.

FiveKnuckles.com learned of the impending match-up from sources close to the organization, and though bout agreements have yet to be signed, the fight is in the process of being finalized according to multiple official sources.

If this fight pans out, it will be interesting to see how Jake Shields does, as he will probably have a hard time taking down the much bigger, and more experienced wrestler in Dan Henderson. After signing with the promotion, Dan has been reported of saying he wants to take on their top guys, Jake Shields, Gegard Mousasi and Fedor, in that order. This fight will be the first step of his goal, and who knows, maybe a victory here will lead him to another shot at holding multiple belts at the same time.

I tend to think

that Hendo/ Mousasi would look similar to Hendo’s fight w/ Anderson. Sure, Dan would score a takedown or 2 and work his GnP, but eventually he would be enticed into a firefight standing (or unable to get the takedown), Mousasi would daze him, and would finish with a sub

I would love to see the fight but i dont think Mousasi has all the power that Silva does ecspecially against a guy like Henderson. I agree that it starts the same but i think it ends in decision that could go either way.

In fact the more that i think about it, the more i want to see that fight.

Mousasi hits extremely hard

he absolutely dusted Musashi in their K-1 fight, and he has starched guys like Cyborg Santos, Babalu, and Sok with heavy shots on the ground.

I also think that Anderson tends to throw more singular, laser like power punches, and if Gegard committed to each punch like Andy does, he’d probably hit just as hard

I don’t even like jake shields.. but dude deserves some respect for taking on the toughest fights he can find really outside the UFC.

Lawler, who at the time fools…er I mean people who rank had him in the top 5 MW, then mayhem, and now hendo? holy moly.

luckily its outside his weight class so when he jumps to the ufc he shouldn’t be damaged good if hendo right hand hulk smashes him.

I can’t see Hendo losing this fight. I’d love it if he Bisping’d Mr. Shields.

Strikeforce is taking a big risk here. I know it’s unlikely Hendo loses but if he does, how on Earth are they going to sell a fight against Mousasi if he can’t even beat Jake Shields? It’s much easier to do it the other way around. I kind of hope Shields catches him in a submission now.

If Shields beats Hendo I might start questioning who the number 1 welterweight in the world is.

If Shields beats Hendo

and moves into the UFC, I’d like to see him fight Alves, or even Hardy first before giving him a title shot…

by MT1127 on Dec 17, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Alves would be an impossibly hard fight for Shields. If Koschek couldn’t get him down, I don’t think Shields can. So unless Shields somehow can outstrike him, or catch a fluke flying armbar, I don’t see it happening.

But a Shields win really increases his value and makes a Shields-Mousasi fight more intriguing.

what?

i’d rather he contest the belt on his natural weight class (WW), than go up another and face the 205 champ..

Meh…the strikeforce WW belt…I don’t even know who is the WW champion or then even have one.

Shields beating Hendo would be hillarious in many ways but I don’t see it happening.

Terrible fight for Shields in my opinion.

Kudos for Shields

no one will ever be able to say that he’s ducked top competition if he takes this fight, a natural WW BJJ specialist taking on a world class natural LHW wrestler? More power to you man.

That said, I can’t see Jake pulling this off.

this fight makes no sense.

1.why? shields isn’t going to help sell this fight for hendo.. and if shields or hendo loses (o pretty strong chance right?) they are just crippling one of their two best fighters. if they were both in the same division or planned on fighting in the same division for a while. sure lets see a champ vs contender or contender vs contender match.

2. shields is NOT going to stand with hendo like bisping. this fight will be 5 rds of either hendo on his back or him defending a single. boring unless shields throws on an early sub.
3. Hendo could have been given anyone (read not a ranked fighter) to show his skill set on. (read KO). instead they are picking the ONE guy (shields) who if he wins.. would be given a golden ticket to the ufc and if he loses WILL hurt all the momentum he’s gained thus far.

Potential Bad Fight for SF

Let’s say Hendo defeats Shields, then Mousasi (Id stop there, Hendo Fedor is a no brainer), it would just further cement the fact that UFC has the best fighters (aside from Fedor) because Andy just made short work of Hendo. Just my 2 cents.

Skadoosh!

Lack Of Respect, WHY?

1.Why do people continuously bash shields? Yes he has zero personality, but I hear a lot of complaining about Mir’s antics, Lesnar’s antics, and so on. This is only like my 3rd post, but have been reading BE for awhile, and it seems even the hardest of hardcores sometimes don’t give shields his due. All the guy does is fight who he’s told, WINS, & and moves on. CBS fight was boring, but he did what he had to do. It’s a shame that wins don’t sell the fighter, but rather his mouth.
2. Strikeforce should have enough footage of his past fights to sell him if they knew what they were doing marketing their fighters. I love MMA, & don’t like bashing any org, but SF really needs a new plan when it comes to getting their fighters known to the masses, and marketing their events.(I think that’s a real obvious point I made, SF needing to do better job of marketing)
3. QUESTION: Who thinks the casuals will say come march/april ‘10, "hey that’s jake shields, he’s that guy that went that boring 5 rounder with mayhem". Casuals are sold leading up to the event, not based on their last fight, but rather on how the org sells them going into an event. Yes shields needs to help sell the fight with hendo, but his mayhem fight will be forgotten by casuals.

I’m not really a huge shields fan either, just nuthugging him a little b/c what else is he suppose to do?

I hope shields ends up KTFO hendo…probability .00034% of happening, but still.

Need to Clarify

Shields bashing, not in this post per se, more an overall observation of people constantly bashing him based on 1 fight. Dude finishes his fights. Am I wrong? If I am, please tell me, seriously.

Yea I see Hendo getting the knockout. But shields is very good on the ground but to get the sub he will have to deal with Hendo’s wrestling.I want Hendo to win but for some reason I see Sheilds getting his back for the rnc.

here is why shields gets no respect

1.)his striking sucks hard
2.)he has an overrated ground game. I have seen the man fight. He had a million options with Miller that he didn’t take on the ground. He is not Gracie, Mir, Nog or Penn…he’s Jake shields. His jitz are pretty good but not great. Any brown belt in jiu jitsu could submitt the guys he has submitted.
3.)he hasn’t beaten anyone with a big name and has lost to some scrubs although not lately.

I’m not saying he sucks but Hendo will be a 8 to 1 favorite. Hendo has beaten guys like Vitor Belfor, Rich Franklin, Renzo Gracie, big Nog, and Wanderlie Silva the unstoppable roids version. Can you imagine what would happen to shields in the stand up against threroid Wandy? Or Vitor? or Rich? Shields greatest victories are against Okami, Miller and Paul Daily. Not bad but come on. Big Nog, Wandy, Franklin, Gracie, Belfort, Bisping, lil Rua, Renato Sorbral, Gilbert Yvel, and on and on these are the men Hendo has beaten. He is a proven tested warrior. Shields is well untested.

by hatteras on Dec 21, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions

not comparing shields and hendo

I’m simply trying to point out that shields fights whoever, whenever he’s told. His striking is terrible, no question, but he still wins, and has been finishing. I agree Hendo probably bisping’s him, but that does not discredit what shields has done going into that fight, and let’s not forget shields is not fighting at his natural weight, & winning so far, THAT should give him respect.

Your last sentence, “Shields is well untested” ( new to this posting stuff) With that sentence alone I think he deserves respect for what he’s done. Why can’t he improve? He’s young enough to improve his striking, as well as his “overrated” ground game.

To compare who Hendo has beaten and who shields has beaten is VERY unfair. Hendo around much longer, and given WAY more opportunities to fight top level competition. Shields in the UFC in the near future is not out of the realm of possibility, and then comparisons to victories can be made(or if any of fitch/kos/alves make the move to sf) (GSP not mentioned b/c he isn’t leaving the UFC…ever)

2 more vicories should.t be discredited either, IMO: Lawler and condit.

Hendo has the much better resume, will be huge favorite, probably will win, but why does that discredit what shields has done, or not earn him respect? Not many WW’s would move up and take the fight against a natural LHW, let alone against a fighter like HENDO.

Hendo by Death

I CANNOT WAIT! to see Hendo Smash shields face in, there is absolutely nothing shields can do in this fight. Hendo has the wrestling advantage, size advantage, and by far striking and power advantage. Im predicting a replay of Bisping/Hendo. Shields will feel Hendo’s power and get tenative or shoot for the TD and realize he can’t take Hendo down then fear will take over and the end is inevitable
