Bellator MW Champ Hector Lombard Wants To Face Dan Henderson In Strikeforce:

"I would sign that contract today," Lombard said. "Dan Henderson is a great fighter and a legend in the sport, but I know I have the skills to beat him."
...
Lombard's managers, Malki Kawa and Ricky Llorente of First Round Management, said Bellator officials have given Lombard their blessing to pursue the fight.

"(Bellator CEO) Bjorn Rebney has told us he's on board with Lombard taking this fight," Kawa said. "Obviously Hector will need to defend his title in 2010, but in the meantime, he'd really like to make this fight happen. Thankfully, Bjorn understands how Bellator can also benefit from a great performance by Hector at Strikeforce – not to mention what a great fight it would be for all MMA fans."
...
"I look forward to hearing something from Strikeforce," Lombard said. "I know they want to put on a great show on such a big stage, and I promise I can give that to them."

This would solve the problem of Henderson and Shields fighting (CBS not wanting Sheilds on the card, and Shields who shouldn’t take the fight if he wants his stock to be high for the UFC).

However, how would this help out Bellator is he loses? I guess Bellator doesn’t really care if their champs lose since their plan is for special non-title fights for their champs during this second season… Will this turn into a Strikeforce, M-1, Bellator co-promotion on CBS Saturday Night Fights?

Nah...

Bellator lets their Champs fight out of promotion as long as they fight outside of their weight class, I believe. But, they may wave that off if Lombard wears and promotes Bellator on CBS.

What you have to remember also is that Lombard and Bellator wanted to fight on the last CBS card as well, as an opponent for Mousasi (I guess Lombard REALLY REALLY wants to fight in Strikeforce) but Strikeforce didn’t book him.

Yes, but they have been matching their champs up with people who they are favored against. If he were to fight Hendo, he would be the underdog and could easily lose with a lot of people watching.

by MMAWrestling on Dec 16, 2009 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

Last time he wanted to fight Mousasi, and he would NOT have been the favorite in this fight, considering that he wanted revenge for losing to him in PRIDE.

What he wanted, and what Bellator has been doing though is different.

I don’t think Hendo vs. Shields is a problem, I think it’s a solution.

Hendo would KTFO Shields, because Hendo won’t let it hit the ground, and Shields stand up is atrocious.

That’s what I’ve been thinking for awhile now. Hendo has a size advantage, wrestling advantage, amazing defense even if Shields can get to the ground, way better striking, and amazing power. Even if Shields tries to fight as safely as he can, I don’t see it going longer than 2 rounds.

I also think Hendo will be the one to not only knock Shields out but knock him back to WW after that fight where he belongs

I thought Bellator exists as an invitational tournament? The only contractual agreement Lombard has is to fight in the finals, correct?

No, they can offer him “Super Fights” to defend his title until the season is over and a new #1 contender is found through the tourney.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 16, 2009 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

Super Fights which wouldn’t be for the title, I believe. All of that is still fuzzy since they haven’t really had their second season yet. =)

Hope they bring in Lombard...

Strikeforce should bring in Eddie Alvarez and Jorge Masvidal too.

I thought that Lombard just reached an agreement to fight in Shine Fights until he goes back to Bellator?

by scrambledeggs on Dec 16, 2009 8:01 PM EST reply actions

He can fight where he wants as long as Bellator lets him. Shine is still trying to finalize all the fights. Also, nothing prevents him from fighting one event in Shine and another in SF since he can only sign 1 fight deals away from Bellator.

Hendo has to fight Shields, for the simple fact they need him to hold the MW title.
But I like the idea of Lombard on the card. Let him have his rematch against Mousasi at catchweight (also cuts down the number of 5 round fights) so you have a card of
Fedor vs. Overeem/Werdum (for the HW title hopefully)
Mousasi vs. Hector Lombard
Hendo vs, Shields for the MW title
and either Aoki vs. Gil/Josh or Bobby Lashley vs Daniel Puder for peer pro-wrestling hype

peer pro-wrestling hype

Was going to type “a matchup between a pair of pro-wrestling peers” then decided that was too much alliteration and tried to edit it to read “pure pro-wrestling hype” . Somehow I managed to end up with this mess. Where is my editor?

by John Nash on Dec 16, 2009 8:21 PM EST up reply actions

I just quickly skipped over that since I knew what you meant.

yeah

thats what im talking about! if all the Small shows get together they can take down this monopolizing Monster called UFC…or better yet UFC will be forced to have open contracts…

by ShallBeknown on Dec 16, 2009 9:26 PM EST reply actions

Ummm Bellator has more restrictive contracts than the UFC. Seriously, look it up.

by MMAWrestling on Dec 16, 2009 9:30 PM EST up reply actions

Really?

Then how did Eddie Alvarez fight in Dream and how has Lombard fought outside of Bellator?

by scrambledeggs on Dec 16, 2009 9:35 PM EST up reply actions

Anyone in the UFC can fight outside the UFC, they just have to have the UFC’s approval. Also, Bellator has realized that they can’t have their champs not fighting for so long, as their second season was delayed multiple times for funding and tv contracts.

Yeah that's exactly what Strikeforce needs

Lombard beats Henderson and then continues fighting in Bellator. Another fighter they can’t use whenever they want, just like Overeem.
