Antonio Rogerio Nogueira Out of UFC 109 Fight With Brandon Vera
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira has withdrawn from his co-headlining light heavyweight contest against Brandon Vera at UFC 109 on Feb. 6 in Las Vegas due to injury, Sherdog.com has learned from multiple sources.
Nogueira, the brother of former UFC interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, suffered a fractured ankle, said both sources. Nogueira’s manager, Ed Soares, could not be initially reached to confirm the injury.
This is just another huge downer. "Lil Nog" had a major coming out with his destruction of Luiz Cane and was looking to ride that momentum into a fight with Vera.
A fractured ankle is one of those injuries that really takes time to recover from as well as any attempt to rush back can just result in re-injury. Without knowing the extent to which it is fractured it is very hard to say how long to expect him out but this is a setback for both he and the UFC, which is going through an injury plagued period like we've never seen in the sport.

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.
Won’t get to make fun of Anton when Nog shitkicks Vera.
I guess he can hang out with his brother in the hospital.
Keep firing Assholes!
Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
yup, this probably saves Vera from a beating. haha..
sucks for the Nogs twins battling numerous injuries though…

This was going to be a super awesome fight. Now give poor Vera someone he can beat after he should have won the fight with Randy.

You must hate him. You want to see him blinded by Jon Jones.

Maybe being put with someone as dynamic as Jones, instead of having Couture hug him for 15min, will force Vera to…y’know…fight.

Well, one of those two fought
And it wasn’t Randy. Vera should have been doing a better job keeping away from the fence, but come on..

That fight annoyed me because Vera just gave it away. Every time he hurt Couture, he never capitalized – even after that brutal body kick, he flopped into Randy’s guard. I scored it for Randy just for imposing his will (however unimpressive it was).

I say call Rich Franklin and let him save another show..
Seems like a decent matchup at this point of their careers..

Then again, I wanna see Forrest vs. Franklin first

why?
Forrest is coming off a win… let him fight Coleman (if he beats his training partner) or maybe wait for Thiago Silva?
by Anton Tabuena on Dec 16, 2009 12:45 AM EST up reply actions
It’s just one of those fights I have been intrigued by for a long time and have been eager to see.
I definitely don’t want to see Forrest fight an old out of his prime Coleman. That’s nowhere near interesting for me. A win against him does nothing for Forrest IMO. Thiago would be fin though.

if Coleman indeed beats couture,
that’s two straight wins, and I think It’d be a decent match to put on, and it has a decent story line… Who else could you put against Coleman? Winner of Liddell/Ortiz?
by Anton Tabuena on Dec 16, 2009 12:58 AM EST up reply actions
If Coleman did beat Randy, you could maybe sell Forrest since he trains at his gym, but I think it would still be a hard fight to sell to fans.
I would rather see Coleman in fights with guys who aren’t going to be contenders in the division at this point. Guys like you mentioned Liddell and Ortiz.

If Coleman wins(which I hope) and also Shogun wins over Machida,
They UFC can make the Shogun-Coleman III for the LHW Championship.. :)

Is there anyone who has kept a tally or concise list of injuries from the last six months??
I would be very interested in seeing it.
It really has been incredible. It makes me wonder how much of it is actual injuries and how much of it is folks faking injuries to get out of fights, play games in contract negotiations, etc. (esp. given the increased amount of money flowing through this thing recently).

Wow
This is seriously depressing. I was hyped to see Lil’ Nog fight. I agree that Vera vs. Forrest would be a good battle but not as interesting to me as the original. Off topic, check out Big Nog and his dope style. He’s channeling his inner Fonz.
You gotta start wondering if they don’t start looking at their training methods after this fight. Maybe guys are just pushing themselves entirely too hard, because this insane rash of injuries is getting byond simple mathematical deviation….
Interesting point is too, that I wonder that Thiago Silva does, if he sees Lil Nog pulling out because of an ankle injury. He’s rumoured to have an ankle injury, so maybe he pulls out too, or asks for more money?\
Maybe they bring in Rampage to murder Brandon Vera as a tune-up for Rashad?
eh...
I mean, some of these may have been due to specific training methods, but we’ve seen guys go down to sheet metal cuts (not preventable), staph (not a training method so much as a gym issue), and a thing like a broken ankle isn’t USUALLY going to be because of over training. The muscle and tendon stuff is usually the stuff you wonder about for over training.

I hope Bones doesn't retire Vera...
As he’s cut back on the flashier tricks and focus more on what works, he’s gotten scarier.
