CBS's Kelly Kahl tells MMA Weekly that Strikeforce will broadcast its next network event in April, with a card that will include Fedor Emelianenko and new acquisition, Dan Henderson.

"We’re looking at a few different dates and there are venue considerations," said Kahl. The card will air in its usual Saturday at 9 p.m. ET slot, with a tape-delayed broadcast on the West Coast.

"Coming off a successful November show, we look forward to being back in the cage," he said.

Just Say No to Tape Delay

CBS, please forget about the need for prime time ratings. For the beneit of the fans, it should be live on the West Coast.

asking a network to pick fans over ratings is a bit unrealistic

football doesn’t cost any money to watch.. neither does basketball… would i watch them on tape delay? hell no… tape delaying is a bad bad idea for sporting events. i’d imagine most on the west coast will stream it.

that’s where you’re wrong.

yeah, this tape delay is a huge problem . It nearly sucks the life out of me. We might have to make this the focal point of our energies and communicate to the network what a degradation this is to their product and our enjoyment of it. I called direct tv before the last cbs show (fedor /rogers) and they told me that they could not allow me access to any of the east coast cbs affiliates. They actually have a law that states they can’t do it. So the only relevant decision maker is CBS. They might be afraid of pissing off some of their w. coast stations who might want to show some bullshit parade or lame ass local news. In any event we need to let them know that we deserve a LIVE product too . anything less is an insult.

Potential Strikeforce April CBS Show Fighters and Matchups:

Fedor vs Overeem/Barnett
Hendo vs Shields
Aoki vs Thomson/Melendez
Werdum vs Arlovski
Lashley vs TBA
Mousasi vs TBA

=)

Hendo and Fedor will be on this card. Aoki vs SF LW Title is also rumored around the same time. Werdum vs Arlovski as well, Frank Shamrock says he wants to fight on the next CBS show, Coker said Overeem will fight in SF around April, etc.

Read the title… “Potential”. These are fighters who are linked to be fighting around this time.
Am I saying these is the card, no. Way too soon, but I can tell you these fighters will be rumored for it in the next coming months.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 15, 2009 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

Why would they book Fedor against Barnett instead of giving him a title fight?

I mean I want to see Fedor/Barnett but what are the chances Josh ever fights in the U.S again and who would they book for Shamrock to fight?

by scrambledeggs on Dec 15, 2009 7:10 PM EST up reply actions

Regarding Barnett and Overeem, they could do those fights in DREAM.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 15, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

Barnett would still be out for a fight in the US in April.

Yeah, I am thinking Overeem. I don’t think they will give Werdum to Fedor next, based on Werdum’s latest comments.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 15, 2009 7:27 PM EST up reply actions

Hendo vs Fedor right off the bat would seem really odd to me. I am hoping that’s not the direction they go.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 15, 2009 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Why the hell would they trust Barnett with a headlining slot?

Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.

by Ubernoober on Dec 15, 2009 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

They don’t and they won’t. They are waiting for Barnett to get over all his issues with the CSAC at the moment. If they are not assured, they will book it in DREAM.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 15, 2009 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

I guess Hendo is finally getting a title shot. Hopefully he can showcase his KO power again and destroy Shields.

http://www.heavy.com/post/strikeforce-returns-to-cbs-in-april-2010-2263

Heavy.com has learned that Henderson is interested in facing Emelianenko in his first bout for the promotion.

The second Strikeforce on CBS card is expected to air in the same Saturday 9pm ET time slot. No other bouts have been officially announced for the card, but Gegard Mousasi and Frank Shamrock are both rumored to participate.

That is crazy. I believe the plan for hendo was 1) Shields, 2) Mousasi 3) Fedor.
Maybe he wants to go backwards? =)

Notice how only Dan is talking about this.

They would be stupid to do this. It would ruin a potential bigger fight for them if they both kept on winning.

Plus I don’t think Hendo would want probable loss in his first appearance for Strikeforce against Fedor, on national tv no less. Hendo will take the easy win and title victory with Sheilds first

http://www.mmaweekly.com/absolutenm/templates/dailynews.asp?articleid=10262&zoneid=2

Kahl said prized Strikeforce heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko will appear on the card against an opponent to be determined. In October, the promotion’s current heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, called the Russian out for an April meeting.
Also due to appear is recent signee Dan Henderson, who left the UFC this month in a highly publicized move. Henderson’s opponent is also TBA, though Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told Steve Cofield of Yahoo! Sports that Henderson’s first opponent was likely current middleweight champion Jake Shields.

So I’m guessing Fedor/Overeem and Hendo/Shields with Mousasi also on the card. And if I was Strikeforce I would book a Jacare/Mayhem fights (if Jacare beats Lindland) for the Dream belt. Doesn’t have to be on this card, but that way you can hype up a future Jacare/Hendo (you can see who I would pick) as a title unification bout.

Now I wonder what the UFC will do to counter? They have UFC 112 in April. I wonder what else they could put together or do they just re-run fights again.

by John Nash on Dec 15, 2009 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think they will book Lashley or Frank before Mayhem vs Jacare for this event.
For the NEXT CBS card, they will try to get Gina on it.

Yeah, UFC’s last two counter programming attempts with re-aired events have not gone as planned, so I expect they may be crazy enough to go head to head with a LIVE event, which is why I don’t expect Strikeforce to narrow this down any time soon.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 15, 2009 7:57 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I was just saying crowning Jacare MW champ of Dream may be good for promoting a future event, so I didn’t expect him to be on this card, I would imagine that would be on a Dream card.
For the UFC the question would be what star power could they put together that it would be cost effective to counter program. Most of their big stars are going to want to be on a ppv event where they get a cut, so they are going to be asking for a lot to be on Spike. And what other big stars do they want to put on free TV when they could make a lot more off of them on ppv. Kimbo? Is it worth putting him on Spike if you thought he could bring in 200,000 more buys ($5 mil) on a ppv card? So maybe a Rich Franklin?

If CBS has Fedor vs. Overeem, Shield vs. Hendo plus Bobby Lashly, Gina Carano, and Gegard Mousasi on a card I would imagine it would do noticeably better than their last show. So what kind of card does the UFC have to put together to keep suppress their numbers? And what is it going to cost them to put such a card together?

by John Nash on Dec 15, 2009 8:14 PM EST up reply actions

Spike TV UFN with Kimbo as the main or co-main event would be my best guess. Cheapest and most effective way for them to get ratings.

I truly think Shields-Hendo is the most intriguing fight of that card. It’s truly obvious that Dan has KO power, but Shields is a beast on the ground. The classic striker vs grappler matchup; but I still think Shields striking is on par with Damien Maia’s.

by TheFury on Dec 15, 2009 7:25 PM EST reply actions

You’re thinking of Lindland. I don’t think Dan ever medaled.

by JRN on Dec 15, 2009 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

Yes. He was a two time Greco-Roman Olympian but he never medaled.

by John Nash on Dec 15, 2009 7:39 PM EST up reply actions

Regardless, I wouldn’t go so far as to clasify Shields-Hendo as grappler v striker. Dan isn’t that one-dimensional IMO

Fedor/Hendo on CBS

This has potential to be the largest audience ever to watch an MMA event.

I wonder if Strikeforce will throw Lashley on the card as well.

by Noah'sArk on Dec 15, 2009 7:43 PM EST reply actions

If you read my prediction above, I expect Lashley and/or Frank to appear on this as well. They will need ratings better than last to go for a 3rd CBS card, then a big end of the year Mega Show (PPV or CBS).

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 15, 2009 7:53 PM EST up reply actions

Which is why it’d be wise to build Hendo up and get some footage they could actually use of him. As of now they have zero. Think about how much more of an audience they can gather with a Bisping esque knockout from Hendo and then show Fedor’s knockout of Rogers. Market it as a pure slugfest when true MMA fans know that it may not necessarily the case. It does sell.

by ChillMike on Dec 15, 2009 8:16 PM EST up reply actions

I would rather see Fedor vs Hendo

I have no interest in seeing Hendo fight Shields. I think that fight has a very good chance of being a snoozer. If they arent going to do Hendo vs Fedor I would rather see Hendo fight Mousasi.

This just confirms what Hendo said earlier..

“[My first Strikeforce fight] will be on the next CBS show, and I’m not sure when that is,” Henderson said. "I’ve still got about four months, probably. We’re not exactly sure of the date.

I don’t know if it’s the best idea to let the cat out of the bag so much, but I guess the UFC already had a good idea for when it would’ve been anyways.

That would mean it would have to be March 6th, because March 13th is Pacman vs Mayweather and no way are they going up against that, and the rest of the month is taken up by the NCAA tournament,. That is, unless they wanted to schedule Saturday night after the Regional Final Games (the only night basketball would be done early enough to air an event). Of course, that is also the night of UFC 111 so that’s gone.
No, I don’t think it’ll be March.

by John Nash on Dec 15, 2009 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

Wouldn’t putting it on after the NCAA tournament has aired on CBS make a lot of sense? It seems to me it would advertising a hell of lot easier.

They did it for their first ever CBS show and it did wonders. They will do it again this time.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Dec 15, 2009 11:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think this is great news (any news of Fedor fighting is great news.) I’m a little sceptical of their ability to pull off seemingly every hypothetical dream matchup and put everybody on one card, but even if its like their last card, that’s obviously a good thing. There was some ambiguity on whether their last card was a ratings success, but it looks like they’re moderately happy with it. If they can grow their numbers a bit (and you would think that with Fedor’s awesome fight/knockout last time, they can bring some more eyeballs) then it could be big for free MMA.
