Fedor Emelianenko Honored in His Russian Homeland

Fedor Emelianenko posing with Vladimir Putin, Jean Claude Van Damme, Italian PM Berlusconi and his brother Aleks.

One thing that M-1 Global does seem to have succeeded in doing is making Fedor Emelianenko much better known in his Russian homeland. Fanhouse reports:

In a ceremony to honor Russia's top athletes, Fedor Emelianenko was honored as the best male athlete alongside top-ranked tennis player Svetlana Kuznetsova, who was the best female athlete of 2009. Over 500,000 votes were cast for the awards, according to Russia Today.

More on Fedor's exposure in Russia from Sherdog:

"The main event of Fedor vs. Rogers reached an impressive 5.46 million viewers in the United States on the CBS Network," said the release. "The fight was also broadcast in Fedor's native Russia by ‘Channel 1,' Russia's largest television network, and reached 16 million viewers in Fedor's home country. In addition, ‘Fedor vs. Rogers' was broadcast to millions of viewers in Korea on SBS, one of the three major national South Korean networks, as well as television networks in China, Latin America, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ukraine, Finland, Africa, Turkey, Israel, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Malta. Live internet streams of the ‘Fedor vs. Rogers' bout generated ground-breaking viewer numbers in Japan and all over the world and these numbers continue to grow through Video on Demand."

In Russia, Emelianenko's bout was broadcasted on a four-hour delay at 12:00 p.m. by the free, government-run channel, which reaches approximately 120 million homes.

Jake Rossen rightly pointed out that there is some fudging of the numbers going on, but it's indisputable that Fedor is better known in his homeland only a few months of working with M-1 and Strikeforce than he became in a decade of fighting in Japan.

I wonder what took so long.

This probably explains why they are so adamant about co-promoting.

I didn’t ever realize how much taller aleksander was than fedor. wow

I’m calling Shenanigans on the picture….. either that or Putin just naturally has an angel’s halo.

Lol you are correct , what a lame ass picture

by JoelMan on Dec 15, 2009 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

as a photographer, I can tell you that if it’s fake, it’s pretty well done, the shadows and pixels work and the halo is light reflection off the mirror and hits the guy’s side head behind Fedor as well.

Plus, I could see him at something with them considering how much into Sambo Putin is.

Maybe. Though if it was doctored, might have been done to make Putin look better. he looks sort of awkward here.

by TLow on Dec 15, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Rossen’s rebuttal is weak and obvious… of course it wasn’t the single biggest anything, but those numbers are huge.

This is exactly the reason why M-1 wanted to co-promote. There’s huge markets out there that aren’t really dominated by the UFC.

Love em or hate em, they have balls and know there’s money out there for everybody.

Fedors height

Fedor is desribed in media as a legit 6 footer, but in this picture, he looks a lot moore like 5’11, 5’10, because Putin is barely 5’7.

On the contrary, in the weigh ins with rogers, he looked like he was 6’1, how tall is fedor really? Pictures can lie.

Fedor is also a master of illusion.

I’m pretty sure Van Damme is only 5’9, but I’m positive Berlusconi, Putin and Van Damme never leave the house without 3 inch risers.

I bet Berlusconi wishes that he was 3 inches lower a couple days ago.

As someone here pointed out this picture seems to be a fake , why does Potin have a white smear over his head that looks like someone cut and pasted him into this photo ?? I wouldn’t take it too seriously …

Looking at it again I might be wrong , could be a light reflection . who gives a shit anyways…

by JoelMan on Dec 15, 2009 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

That’s the light reflecting off his head. There’s no reason not to believe this pic, There’s a video of putin meeting Fedor after one of his fights.

Probably after the Lindland fight – it was in St. Petersburg.

Yeah, most likely.

I met Fedor at his public workout in Manhattan. I’m 5’11, and Fedor was a a little taller than me. My head was pretty much at his nose. So I’d say he’s about 6’1.

Ha… can you imagine meeting the most powerful person in your country, wearing a set of gray pajamas and a white t-shirt. The Emelianenko bros. need a better PR person.

Anyone know the Van Damme / Fedor connection? It’s starting to get a bit stalkerish.

Fudging is an understatement. The Russian Ratings numbers show they did nowhere near the number they are saying. 16 million did not watch the Fedor/Rogers fight. It looks to be a little less than a third that. It did a 3.8 rating.

Impessive? Sure, but an American company would get ripped apart if they “fudged” the numbers that much.

by Lynchman on Dec 15, 2009 4:16 PM EST reply actions

There is the original Russian site that shows them. Fedor/Rogers is #2. I am not sure what the number of households with television is in Russia, but even if we said that all 110 million Russians had them, it would still be around 5 million viewers. In the U.S. it is around 110-120 million so the actual Russian households is likely 60 million or so. If that were correct, the actual number of viewers would be closer to 3 million. Impressive, but not the number that they are claiming.

by Lynchman on Dec 15, 2009 5:19 PM EST up reply actions

if you read it closely they only say it "reached" that many households

and when you’re reading an M-1 Global release, I recommend always reading it closely.

In total, over 25 million MMA fans all around the world were treated to a vintage performance from the world’s greatest MMA fighter, Fedor Emelianenko. The main event of Fedor vs Rogers reached an impressive 5.46 million viewers in the United States on the CBS Network. The fight was also broadcast in Fedor’s native Russia by "Channel 1," Russia’s largest television network, and reached 16 million viewers in Fedor’s home country. In addition, "Fedor vs. Rogers" was broadcast to millions of viewers in Korea on SBS, one of the 3 major national South Korean networks, as well as television networks in China, Latin America, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ukraine, Finland, Africa, Turkey, Israel, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Malta. Live internet streams of the "Fedor vs. Rogers" bout generated ground-breaking viewer numbers in Japan and all over the world and these numbers continue to grow through Video on Demand.

So to get that 25 million number, they had to have mixed actual viewers as well as those Russians “reached” and it says viewers reached, not households.

Regardless, this should have been covered by the MMA press and it barely got a glance. Sherdog and others ran headlines like this:

M-1: Fedor-Rogers Watched by Over 25 Million

If this were the UFC, they would have been pounded for this.

by Lynchman on Dec 15, 2009 7:48 PM EST up reply actions

I have watched UFC 84 9.3 million times. This should count.
