Mir? Carwin? Why Not?
via assets.heavy.com
Earlier this year I was told by a source inside the UFC that Shane Carwin would be allowed to wait out Brock Lesnar. Since he was already scheduled for a title bout (at UFC 106, then UFC 108, then at TBD) he would not lose his place in line. That was months ago. The fact is, all the reasons the UFC booked Carwin into an immediate title shot are fading into the mist.
Mir is also waiting in line for Lesnar to return from injury/illness. Like Carwin, he needs a little boost to make himself a credible contender again. You have Carwin in one hand, Mir in the other. Who to choose? The answer? Put your hands together...
Carwin and Mir is a great fight and a perfect battle to determine the next top contender. While Carwin earned his title shot with candid comments taking shots at Lesnar online, those words will be months and months in the past by the time he hits the cage with Brock. They will need something more to make that a special fight. Mir is also battling a perception problem. He was demolished so thoroughly at UFC 100, manhandled so badly, that he needs more than a win over Kongo to make fans forget. To get his much desired rubber match with Lesnar, Mir could do nothing more convincing than beating a man almost as big, almost as strong, as the champion himself.
Mir-Carwin. The fighters are ready. The fans are ready. Let's hope the UFC is ready too.

I’m on board with this too. However, here’s a question: If Mir submits Carwin, and Antonio Nogueira submits Cain Velasquez, do you give the shot to Mir and have Nog wait out the winner? Or vice versa?
If this happens, I’d almost rather Nog get the shot while Mir gets the winner, just so we don’t have the same defense twice in a row. Nog’s time is also limited so I’d rather see him get his shot sooner than later.
Additionally, it would be a win-win for the UFC.
If Brock beats Nogueira, great, then we get the rubber match between Lesnar and Mir.
If Nogueira beats Brock, great, we get to see whether or not Mir’s victory over Nogueira was caused by Nogueira’s staph infection.

I can’t see that logically. Mir beat Nog. The UFC proclaimed Carwin to be ahead of Cain. So I can’t see how the Cain/Nog winner could jump ahead of the Mir/Carwin winner, unless it is simply a matter of logistics. The way things have been going Matt Mitrione will be the only one healthy enough to fight Brock upon his return.

Well, I do I think it could be a logistical consideration. I think the Cain/Nogueira winner will be on about the same timeline as Lesnar will be on to return to action. Unless Mir v. Carwin is a late addition to any of the three January/February cards, I don’t think that match’s winner will be ready for Brock’s return.
Then again, maybe Carwin or Mir drop the other very quickly without breaking a hand or enduring any other injuries and that winner would be able to go on a quick turnaround.
Any of the four fighters will do good business with Brock Lesnar and all are compelling matches on different levels.

Then, if Nog beats Mir, we get to see Mir’s head explode over which rubber match to be obsessed with.

I think that question
all depends on when Brock comes back. If he’s back and ready to go by the Summer, then I say let Lesnar keep his title, and give the Nog/ Cain winner the next title shot (Cain is MUCH more deserving of a title shot than Carwin IMO- qualitatively and quantitatively, Velasquez has fought and beat far better comp- Kongo & Rothwell > Gonzaga).
Plus, Carwin/ Mir won’t happen until April/ May anyways, whereas Nog/ Cain is happening in February, and if they’re unscathed, the winner should be able to fight by the Summer.
However, if Brock is still trying to regain his muscle mass, and get back to 100%, then maybe they should either strip him of the title, or set up an interim title, with the Nog/ Cain winner squaring off against the Carwin/ Mir winner. That way, you get several intriguing matchups that are possible, and the winner will look extremely impressive- adding to the drama of Lesnar’s comeback.

IMO Gonzaga > Kongo&Rothwell. But Cain’s win over those two is more articulate, than comeback KO by Carwin.

Mir by Rd 1 submission
Mir and Carwin are ahead of Nog and Cain, respectively. The Mir-Carwin winner deserves the first shot at Lesnar.
Having said that, it may come down to who’s healthy and ready to fight.
Mir vs Carwin makes sense but logistically it’s more difficult to make work if Brock can return in July… Then you would have to Rely on the Winner of Cain vs Nog (which would be a less dangerous fight for Brock stylistically and because of his layoff).
And then do the winner of Carwin vs Mir against Brock in November 2010.
Honestly, I don’t think it’s that logistically tough. Both Mir and Carwin could easily fight at UFC 111 on March 28th in New Jersey under GSP/Hardy as the co main, and then they’d be ready by July pending injury. If there is injury you give it to Cain/Nog winner.

The problem is how fair is it to brock to come back and fight someone coming off of that momentum?
The fair thing to do would be to keep Carwin on the shelf so that way it’s somewhat of an even playing field. A year off is a bitch for anyone to come back from and then add to that his condition.
Are you serious?
By your logic, you’re saying that to be fair to Brock, the UFC should keep Carwin from fighting (indefinitely), until Brock returns, so that it’s an even fight?
That’s asinine. I don’t even think Shane earned the title shot, and sidelining him for no good reason is just a profoundly stupid thing to suggest.

Who said indefinitely?
Carwin fighting for the title in July versus fighting Mir in late spring? what the fuck is the difference again?
It's been said
several times that Lesnar is out indefinitely. Brock is said to have lost a ton of weight, and Dana said that it won’t even be a sure thing that he’s coming back for another month or so. He still has to undergo 1 more surgery.
Keeping Carwin out (especially when he hasn’t really done that much to deserve a title shot) makes no sense whatsoever.

If Brock isn't in championship condition then he should give up the belt
The UFC gives its champions the toughest fights available in the UFC. If Lesnar is significantly physically diminished and needs warm ups then he can get a title shot as soon as he’s ready.
Carwin has a new opponent
Don’t know how valid it is, but I just read a post on MMALinker that Shane Carwin sent out an e-mail through his fanclub that he has a new fight with a date now and that details would be coming soon.
We might not have to wait long to find out if he’s fighting now. If true, it definitely will be Mir
