Dan Hardy to mirror Matt Serra’s strategy for GSP:

"I don’t want it to become too much of an issue -- defending the takedown -- because I won’t throw like I do against anybody else," Hardy said. "I don’t want to be holding back on any of my kicks and punches because, at the end of the day, that’s what is going to win me the fight. My intention is to go in there, throw hard, just like Matt Serra did, but obviously a little more technical -- I’m a little quicker and more technical. I’ve got reach and weight on Matt Serra, so I can do exactly what he did but a lot better."

Did he just say he wasn’t gonna defend takedowns? Seriously?

That’s exactly what I was thinking. I have a feeling we’re in for a wrestling clinic for 5 straight rounds.

Hardy is such a punk

but he did light up Swick in a big way. Wish he would’ve fought Fitch or Koscheck before getting the shot though.
I understand why they did it this way and agree with the business logic, but it would be so much easier to predict this fight if we’d seen Hardy against a really good wrestler first.

Not only that but Marcus Davis fought very competitively with hardy, couldve won that fight easily. It’ll be nice to see hardy humbled.

I can't think of a more one-sided fight in recent history.

Sure, some have been over quick, but that was a meticulous, 20-min destruction followed by one of the ghastliest cuts ever.

GSP won’t let Hardy out of the first round. I figure GSP takes Hardy down early, GnP’s the shit out of him. If Hardy somehow gets back to his feet, he’ll be picked apart and won’t have any strength after a brutal ground beating. Typical GSP gameplan.

still not nearly as entertaining as Serra vs. GSP 1

People say Serra was dominated worse...

But GSP is the one that tapped. I’ll leave it at that.

Side note, I know GSP is the better fighter and all that, but nobody takes this away from Serra. My fave UFC moment ever.

Either you’re related to Serra or you’re one of those guys that hates on certain fighters because they’re too popular.

He dosnt seem to be tapping to me, but then again the ref stopped it right when he turned and he might of started tapping had the ref had not of been right there.
And i never new he might of admitted it.

b/c he was totally rocked and couldn’t defend himself anymore. No shame in that, IMO.

Serra beating GSP is better than Randy beating Tim? Or Nog winning the belt? Or Griffin/Bonnar I? Or even Mir returning from a devastating motorcycle crash to be a top HW again?

by Scott C. Broussard on Dec 15, 2009 6:20 PM EST up reply actions

yea it was for me.

I had to work a night shift, and missed the fight. As I was watching the DVR with my girl, she says, “You were right… the fight was one-sided.” I felt bad, cuz I KNEW GSP had whooped Serra up… and then to my surprise he won. My fave moment ever…. I didn’t say it was the best, but my favorite.

Randy vs. Tim was pretty epic, but wasn’t as big of an upset. Mir making it back as one of the best HWs ever is a better story, I just don’t quantify it as one moment… tho the Nog fight may even be my second fave moment.

I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.

Hardy seems to be assuming that his hands are so much better than GSP’s. I think GSP can handle Hardy on the feet if he wanted to.

I think Hardy can rock GSP, dude has some power and is very technical but that window will be very small for him to do so. He’ll be on his back asap. GSP by armbar or GNP.

to see GSP test his stand up against Hardy just like he did w/ Alves.

by vivero on Dec 15, 2009 4:25 PM EST up reply actions

GSP was a completely different fighter in the first Serra fight. He was much, much smaller and he relied mainly on his natural ability. Now GSP is a straight up beast and has honed his skills even more. Alves is a better striker than Hardy and look what happened to him.

by Discman2 on Dec 15, 2009 1:58 PM EST reply actions

I like to think he started fighting like a craftsman instead of an artist. Personally I prefer the artist, but the craftsman is an undeniably better fighter.

maybe I don’t know what you mean but I kinda think it’s the other way around… georges began on talent ( & fancy striking ) but became known for wrestling and gameplan tactics.

by cagefightonacid on Dec 15, 2009 2:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Yeah, I think you guys agree, but you just misinterpreted his metaphor. He used to fight more freely and expressively and now he fights like a technician. Watching the artist fight was more fun, but the technician may be the best fighter ever.

by Chris Barton on Dec 15, 2009 2:31 PM EST reply actions

Every fighter always says that:

“I’m going to throw a zillion bombs from a million different directions”. Then come fight time, they stay back and are extra cautious. Anyways, since Hardy is a heavy-handed striker, GSP will opt for take-downs at will.

If that is how he can win then that is how he will fight.

eh u never know anything could really happen noone really gave brett rogers a shot in hell but he gave fedor a tough round

maybe hardy will come outta nowhere and beat the shit outta gsp, theres little to no shot of this happening but it would be pretty sweet if it did and mix up the whole ww division thats become stagnant with gsp bein so much better than d changed everyone

Does Dan Hardy really have that much hype. Nobody really considers him a top five welterweight and I don’t think the consensus even has him in the top ten. This is the least hyped title challenger since Cote maybe.

by Neil Manich on Dec 15, 2009 5:50 PM EST up reply actions

He’s more technical and faster maybe, but he’s not very fast. I think that Thiago is stronger and faster than Hardy and he really only landed a couple of shots on GSP. Fitch got countered like crazy because GSP was just way too fast for him.

I bet GSP gets a submission in rd 1.

by Dooda on Dec 15, 2009 4:58 PM EST reply actions

I think this is exactly the right gameplan for him. What else is he supposed to do, wish for the wrestling fairy to give him BJ Penn quality takedown defence overnight? Fat lot of good it did for BJ.

If Dan is going to win, he needs to be ferocious and really open up his striking, and work on ground escapes rather than takedown defence IMO.

by brad23 on Dec 15, 2009 6:05 PM EST reply actions

I agree, and I think that is what he means. There’s a very small chance of him winning, and that very small chance relies on his striking. Instead of keeping distance and being very cautious with his punches he needs to step in and give it all he’s got, commit to his punches.

Even if he followed a strategy like Alves did he could find some success, Alves was able to get right back up from most takedowns but he had a huge reach disadvantage which killed his chances. Hardy will not have that problem. I’m not saying Hardy has a good chance of winning by any means, but I thinm he could learn a few things from the Alves fight

by StevenGiles on Dec 15, 2009 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

Translation

“I have a punchers chance. I am going to throw punches as hard as I can and pray.” He is right.

The real controversy will be will he get destroyed as badly as Sanchez or will it be worse? My prediction, his face will look prettier since GSP doesn’t throw the hands like BJ, but he will be seeing a chiropractor.
