Late Night Fights: Yves Edwards vs. Nate Marquardt

Photo

Late Night Fights is a new feature here at Bloody Elbow where most nights we will provide a single fight to be enjoyed and discussed by our community members.  These fights may be from way back in MMA's history, they may showcase a new prospect or they may feature a classic moment in the sport.

Tonight we go back to the Bas Rutten Invitational 4 (August 14, 1999) where a young Yves Edwards (6-2) took on an even more inexperienced Nate Marquardt (3-0).  The fight took place in the first round of an 8 man tournament.

Also of note: the fight featured the debut of eventual UFC heavyweight title challenger Gan McGee who scored a first round TKO over UFC vet Sam Adkins.  Adkins last fought in 2007, ending his career with a 7-20-2 record.  But those 20 losses include names like McGee, Don Frye, Tank Abbott, Travis Fulton, Kevin Jackson, Dan Severn, Ricco Rodriguez, Guy Mezger and Ken Shamrock.

But we're here for the video, so let's get to it:

Discuss!

Yeah...

I figured it’d be more fun to let you guys hear that on your own than prepare you for it ;)

It's very cool to see Nate when he was primarily a BJJ guy

I posted this fight a while ago as a FanShot and I go back to it often.

It’s also really amazing to imagine these two guys competing in the same class, when Nate could currently compete at 205 if he wanted to, and Yves could probably drop to 145.

by Scott Haber on Dec 15, 2009 12:08 AM EST reply actions

Indeed it is. It’s almost hard to recognize Nate in that video. I always enjoy videos like this for the simple fact that it’s interesting to see how far certain fighters have come from their early days.

No worries

it’s great to get obscure fights like this posted again so they get more attention

by Scott Haber on Dec 15, 2009 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

They called Nate powerful back then, now he is beastly

by IRodC on Dec 15, 2009 12:09 AM EST reply actions

Also, in case anyone was curious

Nate went on to win this one-night tournament, submitting his next two opponents, both in the first round as well.

And...

the guy he beat in the finals lost to Shannon Ritch….

….twice

Bas Rutten Invitational is a great name for an event. I guess Bas must have had something to do with it since he was in Yves’s corner (though that might indicate a little conflict of interest…). Anyway, it makes it sound classy, while benefitting from the association with a legendary fighter.

by JRN on Dec 15, 2009 12:16 AM EST reply actions

I mean, if you’re in the crowd and you don’t know why any of these people are, you can still think “they must be good, Bas Rutten invited them!”

by JRN on Dec 15, 2009 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

I haven’t seen much of Nate outside of the UFC, very cool to see him before he was contender.

by grb on Dec 15, 2009 12:19 AM EST reply actions

its hilarious to think they at one point competed with each other. nate is a huuuuge middle weight and steve is a small lightweight.

You missed the sandals too.

And Nathan had some nice soccer shorts as well.

Gotta love the early MMA fashion sense.

by Jason_73 on Dec 15, 2009 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

The Jeans and the t-shirt are fine. I could care less what you dress like. But im pretty sure the sandals would actually inhibit your ability to move quickly and stay out of the way.

This is actually NOT Yves Edwards.

It’s actually his far less publicized twin brother Steve. While Yves was training in the style of “Thug Jitsu”. Steve was busy trying to popularize “Pimp Jitsu”. Regrettably this was Steves last fight.

For 1999, those commentators were really good

by Shaun32887 on Dec 15, 2009 12:46 AM EST reply actions

Very clear calm commentating. Polar opposites of todays over-hyped screaming style of rogan & goldy / mauro .. But maybe crowd size has something to do with it.

by grb on Dec 15, 2009 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

Even though they sound like they should be announcing antique road show they were actually better than many current ones.
There was no “I bet you didn’t know this but Steve Edwards has the most accurate foot grabs in Bas Rutten invitational history”

I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

I love seeing ankle locks successfully pulled of in MMA. many people think they are cheap, but hey, it’s there and it works for a reason. This was also cool to see how Nate was so tiny compared to the beastly figure he is today.

That’s actually a hobby of mine. But my favorite thing to do with the guidos is walk up to them when they are talking to girls and tell the girl “you’re gorgeous, what are you doing with this guy?” It’s worked twice and I’ve been punched in the face a coupla times. Monmouth U kids aren’t fun to mess with.

and yeah…PRX is definitely a sinkhole for cash. I’ve spent a ton of money on records there. But there aren’t alot of places around with their selection of vinyl. Plus I make a day/night of it and go to triumph for some good beers.

That’s not true. But the next best place for Vinyl is Curmudgeon and that place has gone downhill. Vintage Vinyl is fun for band showcases but not much else.

I love this new feature by the way. Perhaps you could even show some fights of guys that are fighting on the big cards on the weekend before they got to the big show. Would be a great way to get hyped up for some fights.

Anyone know what weight this was at? Marquardt doesnt look that much bigger than him.

155

and yeah, I’ll be doing it with fighters on upcoming cards for sure.
