Snapshot of the Day: Diego Sanchez's Fight Ending Cut on UFC 107
Promoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Luke Thomas.
"In 10 years of being in this business, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anybody more busted up than Diego is right now. His whole lip is split open in half, in two different places. When I say split open, it’s torn down to this stuff down here (indicating a point on his chin). His forehead is as open as [Marvin Eastman] the kid that Vitor Belfort kneed [at UFC 43]. They pulled that thing wide open. His face? I think his nose is broken. I don’t even know how Diego kept coming forward. He’s a tough kid, man. I’m almost positive his nose was broken by the third round. That Tony Robbins [expletive] works."
--Dana White, talking about the damage Diego Sanchez received from BJ Penn on the UFC 107 Post-Fight Press Conference.

Diego
Got Wrecked. He only had 3 moves the whole fight, head kick, 1-2 punch combo and the “grab BJ’s leg and get punched/elbowed” move that he tried 16 times.

According to Fightmetric
Diego landed a whopping 8 strikes. BJ landed a mere 150.

I don't think that Diego even had a gameplan for this fight
One thing that stood out to me was that Diego is a southpaw, but he comes forward in a straight line (no angle) when he strikes making it very easy for BJ to utilize a counter-right straight (which if I’m not mistaken, was the punch that dropped Diego in round 1). Pushing BJ against the cage and trying to take BJ down with a single is also not something that works on him as shown with the Florian fight (unless you are GSP). The only thing that worked (kind of) for Diego was the left high kick. It makes me wonder if a kick-based strategy similar to what Shogun utilized on Machida would be effective on BJ (of course, BJ would probably counter, and that strategy only works for points).
by chrisbboy82 on Dec 13, 2009 1:35 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
the push to the fence is never the gameplan, it just happens when fighters feel what bj can do to them with punches
by amadeus on Dec 13, 2009 1:36 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Kenny’s plan was to use his kicks more, but BJ was very effective at keeping him from getting the right distance.

If anything, you’ve gotta give Diego credit for being one tough SOB. I don’t know of another fighter who could’ve taken that kind of punishment and kept coming.
That being said, can anyone truly challenge BJ Penn at 155? I’m beginning to think the answer is a resounding “No.”

i think if bj gains some weight
a third in the gsp/ penn trilogy is warranted
by amadeus on Dec 13, 2009 1:48 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t really think so, but if he wants to try again, I don’t see why not. I think if he does try for a third shot at GSP he should vacate the LW belt, and fight a few contenders at WW first.
by Hardcase on Dec 13, 2009 4:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
If.. err.. I mean after he beats Maynard and Edgar, I wouldn’t mind seeing him just move to WW. If he can get through Alves or Fitch, let’s see BJ vs. GSP III. I knew BJ was the king of 155lbs, but before last, I didn’t think I’d ever say that.
by kid_eh on Dec 13, 2009 4:21 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I almost feel like match-ups against Maynard and Edgar are pointless with how we’ve seen BJ go through Stevenson, Sherk, Florian, and now Sanchez. Maynard will likely fare no better in taking down Penn than his other challengers, and as we’ve seen in Edgar’s fights, a strong grappler can control him. It’s not that they’re not good, championship level fighters, it’s that BJ really seems to be on a whole other level to the rest of the LWs out there right now. If BJ decided to just move up to WW now after this fight, I don’t know who could blame him.
by Hardcase on Dec 13, 2009 4:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
i think we can compare that domination rationally to silva/griffin
its just that diego has a better chin. bj is on a completely other level, but so is gsp. I think that BJ in the WW weight class would enable us to sort out the fitch/koscheck situation, and also pose a credible opponent to alves… hell i’d even like to see AJohnson vs BJ for no real reason.
If Aldo begins to dominate the 145 division… and i mean that i want to see him beat faber and i’d love to see a superfight with torres… i would like to see him possibly fight BJ. Aldo is by far the fastest striker i’ve seen, and he’s so young that i think within two years he’s going to have had put on some man weight… and bj would only be 33, still within his peak physical years. I think that would be an incredible fight
by amadeus on Dec 13, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Am I the only one that thinks Torres would...
get badly destroyed by Aldo?
The power in Aldo’s striking game combined with Torres willingness to take shots just adds up to a spectacularly short fight to me.

Edgar and Maynard seem to be the concensus contenders
Let them rematch, winner faces Penn. if Penn can beat that winner, I’d be fine with him vacating the belt, adding some weight the RIGHT way, and working up the WW ladder to face GSP again. WW is getting stagnant, Penn would shake things up nicely.

Sure, Diego isn't an elite figher, but...
Sure, Diego is a little overrated, but this was more the proof of just how dominate BJ really is. I personally think it’s awesome to see a great champion show everyone just how dominate he really is. These are the best fighters in the world, and he makes them look awful. BJ, GSP and Silva are really on another level from everybody, including Fedor. These guys don’t lose rounds; they dictate everything that happens in their fights; the never get pushed around.
I like that BJ fights with a controlled mean streak. In round 5 you could just see something switch on and you knew he was going to put Diego away. That’s what Silva should’ve done to that guy who laid on his back and cried (the fighter who’s no longer worth naming…at least Forrest stood up and took his beating like a man).
On an aside, I think this is my new all-time favorite Danaism:
“I’m almost positive his nose was broken by the third round. That Tony Robbins [expletive] works.”

Not sure why you threw this in there
BJ, GSP and Silva are really on another level from everybody, including Fedor.
Give Fedor some credit. He’s beaten plenty of significant HW and has never really lost. Many argue Fedor isn’t even a true HW.
by bignerd on Dec 13, 2009 2:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I think the point he was getting at was that those guys absolutely control the fight not losing rounds and remaining totally dominant throughout the fight
by drano on Dec 13, 2009 4:18 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn’t put Anderson Silva on that list than. He doesn’t control the fight. He chooses not to engage in a fight until the other fighter decides to suit his style.

Total Masterful Domination by Penn
I thought Brents prediction of Penn by TKO in the 1st was gonna come true there for a sec. lol I wonder where Diego goes from here? Maybe do some training with GSP on those takedowns.
BJ is KING at 155lb. That is all.

are you serious Kenny is not the same fighter he was in the first match his stand up is miles ahead of where it used to be but just because diego wasn’t able to get the takedown on BJ doesn’t mean he won’t be able to on Kenflo and Diego’s impressive top game was how he dominated him so easily the first fight all in all I say it makes for a good fight

Cool, I was 4-1 on the main card as far as predictions go(I thought Buentello would get the nod from the judges). The Fitch fight went more or less predictably, as did Mir. What surprised me the most was Ken-Flo finishing Guida, and Diego being cut. I thought Sanchez and Guida would at least go the distance in defeat.

I agree. Let him vacate the LW belt, let them have a mini-tourney or something to sort out the title picture there, and let BJ take some time to put on the weight for 170 the right way. Maybe let him coach a season of TUF opposite Matt Hughes to give him time and build up his return to WW.

I gots to mention a few things.....
I said from the day this match was made that I believed that Kenny Florian was a more complete fighter than Sanchez. And last night proved it in many ways. The BJ/Florian fight was much more competitive until the untimely end. Florian pretty well easily out hustled and then stopped Guida when Sanchez could not.
But to those who thought Diego unworthy because of the way the match went. Go cry about it. Because the fact is Sanchez had 25 tough fights. He was never stopped or submitted before last night. He only lost twice to Fitch and Koscheck(in tough battles that went to decision). He just ran into an elite fighter. As I have said from the beginning, the only one that can truly beat BJ Penn is himself.
All things being said I think that Gray Maynard gets the next shot. It will be a harder fight for BJ but with the same outcome. After that, I don’t see any reason to keep fighting the lightweights if I am BJ. But if he moves up again, he needs to do it proper and not just come in at walk around weight, build the shoulders and thighs up slowly.

Sure diego looks beat up
But to me Sakuraba post-Arona fight looked worse
by IRodC on Dec 13, 2009 3:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Irony
It was pure irony that diego was fighting his clear better and Guida was fighting Florian at the same time. After the Guida v. Sanchez fight, it was dramatic how different two fighters react when they come into the cage truly believing they can win vs. being star struck. Sanchez looked defeated after the first round. Guida the same. Both were disgustingly bloody at the end. The same fighters that gave us an amazing fight not to long ago.

That’s some unreal damage. Sanchez is a tough competitor and earned even more respect from me. Penn is a handful at 155 pounds, man.

Give Diego a break.
BJ has a way of breaking all of his opponents physically and spiritually. He made Florian Stevenson and Sherk look just as bad. So why does a totally game-hearted Diego get the riot act? BJ is insanely talented. Of course Diego’s entire game got shut down.

Disagree
Diego hasn’t looked like his former self after the back-to-back losses to Kos & Fitch. He used to be a monster, then beat an overmatched Bielkheden & fat Fiorivanti, then dropped to LW, where he couldn’t put away Stevenson and barely beat Guida. He seems to have lost his power and in-fight intensity. He’s not the same guy anymore that ripped through Karo, Diaz, and Riggs.

by themachiavellian on Dec 13, 2009 4:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
At the very least, Diego is still the best, toughest kind of canvas for an elite fighter to paint with blood. He’s got a lot of heart, doesn’t give up, and has great ability to recover from big shots. He’s still one of the best lightweights, BJ’s just awesome at every facet of MMA. There are probably many flaws in Diego’s game people will hit on, but I think the biggest one is tied to his intensity. He just seems so tense, single-minded and mechanical, both in his striking and grappling. Occasionally he overwhelm a guy that way, but it leaves him slower, tighter and more predictable in his striking and reaction times then he could be. The yoga ain’t workin’.

Protecting Your Fighter In MMA?
Halfway thru Round 4 last night I wondered aloud if Diego’s corner was going to let him answer the bell for Round 5 and got little to no reaction from those around me. I think it’s the responsibility of the cornermen/coaches to protect their fighter’s future and considering by that stage Diego had no chance of winning that fight on points or stoppage, his corner made a huge error. When BJ’s brother made the call to throw in the towel during BJ/GSP II, it made a ton of sense to me. Why let it continue? In boxing, it’s acceptable to throw in the towel to protect the fighter’s future and I think it’s strange we don’t see it more often in MMA.
Of course, I understand in MMA the fight can turn at any moment, but in instances like last night’s fight shouldn’t a cornerman be thinking about the next fight, too? Diego’s guys let him answer the bell for Round 5 and now this really talented young fighter will probably never be the same guy as a result.
