UFC 107 Results: B.J. Penn Slashes Diego Sanchez
Tonight's lightweight title fight saw B.J. Penn confirm his status as the untouchable king of the UFC's lightweight class.
B.J. Penn came out and claimed center ring. From there he mercilessly battered Diego Sanchez. Before the first minute of the round was expired, B.J. Penn had dropped Diego Sanchez and followed it up with damage on the ground. But somehow Diego Sanchez survived and got back to his feet. It wasn't long before Diego ate a hard uppercut that rocked him. Diego worked for a takedown that didn't go anywhere. But he scored with a combination as Penn escaped. Penn stalked Sanchez who fired back with kicks. Sanchez shot but Penn sprawled. Sanchez landed an uppercut and a flying knee late, but Penn tagged him on the button again to end the right, staggering Sanchez.
Round two saw Penn again claim center ring. Sanchez fired for a single leg and forced Penn against the cage. Penn escaped and dodged a big uppercut from Sanchez. Penn began to initiate exchanges and hurt Sanchez. Diego struggled while backing up, but moving forward only allowed Penn to counter. Penn even threw a low kick toward the end of the round. Then he tagged Sanchez with punching combinations. Sanchez shot again in the last 0:30 and scored with an uppercut on the break. But Penn punished him to close the round.
In the third, Sanchez charged in but ate counters to open the action. Penn scored with a left hook. Sanchez shot again. He ate uppercuts for his troubles. Penn hunted his prey. Sanchez looked for the left high kick then shot. Penn elbowed him before escaping. Penn turned up the pace and began to batter Sanchez. Sanchez forced it to the cage again but Penn ended up reversing him and going for a take down of his own. Sanchez evaded it but got hurt in the process. Again Penn ended the round scoring on a hurt Sanchez.
Sanchez entered the fourth behind a visibly broken nose. Penn scored with a hard counter in the first exchange of the championship rounds. Penn stalked him down and scored a vicious one-two. Diego shot again only to get lit up by Penn. As Penn advanced all Sanchez had to answer with was heart. When Sanchez attacked with punches, Penn scored with hard hard counters. When Sanchez shot for a single, Penn stuffed it. Penn landed knees and punches to close the round.
The fifth round saw Sanchez nursing a horribly cut lip as B.J. Penn danced untouched in his corner. Penn landed a body shot to open it. Sanchez shot again, fruitlessly. Penn hit a switch to stagger Sanchez. Sanchez pulled guard then rolled and Penn stuff that too. Back on the feet, Penn evaded a high kick before coming forward. A high kick from Penn followed by a nasty series of uppercuts showed that the champion wanted to get the finish. Sanchez was badly badly cut by a brutal combination of knees and punches from Penn and the fight is stopped.

Nasty cut
Diego’s gonna look like Frankenstein next time we see him…..can anybody beat BJ at 155lbs?
No way ever...
Aoki couldn’t get it to the ground unless he pulled guard and BJ’s BJJ is good enough that he isn’t getting caught in a quick sub. He’d blow up Aoki standing. BJ’s BJJ is on the level with Aoki. Aoki’s striking is NOWHERE near the level of BJ’s

Aoki’s game is like Hazelett. It’s really flashy. And better than most people he’ll ever fight. But like…there’s a reason why a guy with great, fundamental BJJ like Tony DeSouza subbed Dustin. It’s the same reason why I think BJ would have a better chance of subbing Aoki than vice versa

I guess BJ can vacate the LW title and moves to welterweight unless they bring in Alverez, Hansen or Aoki. And whoever has the title has an asterisk (best in the LW division second to BJ)
Nah...
let him run through Maynard and Edgar and the like

2nd R5 stoppage in UFC history.

Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.
Both R5 stoppages involve fighters who have won titles in two different weight classes.

Diego was very tough tonight, but B.J. was just too much.

The only man that can beat BJ Penn at 155 is GSP if he weighs in with enough helium balloons strapped to his body to offset 15 pounds of body weight.

And after he’ll beat BJ at 155, he’ll go Kyle Maynard and fight Jose Aldo at 145.

B.J. was the only person in that fight. Penn is just amazing, there’s nothing more to it, the guy is just simply amazing.

one thing is that
Penn’s conditioning has noticeably improved ALOT.

It’s to the point that it shouldn’t be considered an issue for him, he’s more than proved it and if people rely on that as a weakness of his… they’re boned.

Right...
i got a little worried in the first round when he flurried and didn’t finish. But it wasn’t his “bad cardio” so much as a big energy moment like that so early in a five round fight is dangerous. But he was fine

That was a brutal beating Diego took. BJ Penn is motivated, training hard and currently scares the heck out of me. With his last four fights I think he has wanted to punish his opponents, drag them into deep water and then turn it on.
It seems he wants to not only defeat the fighters he faces, he wants to destroy them.
I still think BJ is 1-1 against GSP.
BJ looked exactly the same
when he exited the ring as when he entered

I feel sorry for him. I’m not his fan but it was hard to watch him getting beaten like that.

I said it during the live thread, but Diego needs a real camp.
Saulo and Xande will do wonders for his BJJ, but he needs a real MMA training camp, not just a BJJ camp where he brings in a few outside guys to work on the other stuff.
I think it was a huge mistake for him to leave Jackson’s, regardless of the personal beef regarding GSP and all the other drama.
As impressed as I was with Diego against Joe Daddy and Ken-Flo, his striking looked awful tonight and his gameplan was horrible, if he even had one. The guy needs to hook up with a serious team, if anyone can even put up it with his eccentricities.
His originally plan was to run to the middle of the ring and get out boxed by BJ. When that went as planned Diego went to phase 2. Which is the florian plan of trying for a takedown. I am still not sure what anyone plans on doing to BJ when they get him on the ground besides get swept and RNC’d though.
GSP go Penn down, didn’t get swept and didn’t get RNC’d.

“Everybody has a plan … until they get punched in the mouth” — Mike Tyson
You can gameplan against BJ all you want, but the fact remains that he is the best boxer in the LW division, has the best takedown defense in the LW division, and has the best BJJ in the LW division. No matter what your plan is, BJ is going to completely wreck your plan as soon as you engage him.
