UFC 107 Results: Frank Mir Annihilates Cheick Kongo
The grudge match of the night saw the ex-champion Frank Mir re-establish himself at the top of the division at the expense of Cheick Kongo.
A much bigger Mir came out against the Frenchman Kongo. The first exchanges were inconclusive before Mir dropped Kongo with a hard left hook. Then Mir went for a guillotine and finished him quickly. Kongo didn't tap but the referee stopped the fight when Kongo's arm fell limply to his side.
Mir talked a lot of smack coming into the fight but backed it up in the cage.

How many days til...
the interwebz finds an excuse for why Kongo lost, instead of giving Mir his due.

They made a secret Davis-Lytle agreement not to go to the ground
and so Mir cheated, and it should be changed to a DQ.

I don't like Frank Mir. At all. Love Brock Lesnar. But that was somethin' else.
That was a bad, bad man who won that fight tonight. Wow. What a punch, what a choke. That was impressive. Kongo was stupid to give him his neck, but wow, Mir sure didn’t waste an opportunity there. Props to Mir.

I'll start
Kongo threw his hands down off a feint instead of protecting himself and walked into a punch. That was stupid.
I think stupid still counts as a fair way to lose. :-)

Right because that’s exactly what happened when he came back from nearly being crippled Mir took the easy way back to mma. The hate for Mir truly astounds me sometimes, no matter what he does somehow someone will try and discredit him it’s freaking pathetic.
Also i’d like to thank Mir for snapping my year long losing streak of picking fights, I thought he was doa after seeing Guida fail earlier.

whooooa buddy...
no one said that IS what happened. That was just someone floating out possible internet excuses for the loss.

I wish Mir would shut his mouth...
but he was scary tonight. He’s going down the right road with his strength training, impressive indeed.
Enough with the PED comments too…Mir is as clean as Lesnar.

Mir hate is fine
you can think whatever you want about him as a person. As a fighter? The guy is a legit badass.
Also, I think that was a cross he dropped him with, not a hook. Could be wrong though
I hate Frank Mir's arrogant shtick as much
or more than anyone else, but I don’t think there’s much disputing his win against Kongo. Deadly performance.
The problem I had, is I was hoping we’d learn something about him tonight, and all I got out of it is that he’s got legit power in his left hand. Obviously, if he gets a sub opportunity, he’s the strongest submission fighter in the game (I mean literally, and he’s a mean SOB to boot) so it’s going to get locked in if at all possible.
He didn’t really prove that he’s got an improved striking game, but he did prove he’s got game-changing power potential. We’ll see if it’s more like Josh Koscheck’s or BJ Penn’s, but it’ll have to wait for another fight at least.
Launched himself right back into the title picture with that win.

That explanation at the post fight interview of how he set up the punch and the analysis of Kongo’s own hole in the standup department honestly leads me personally to believe that he does have an improved striking game. Improvement isn’t huge leaps, but little steps in that something as little as adding a feint to your arsenal is an improvement. I’m not saying Mir can do K-1 now, but to stand and trade with a highly regarded standup fighter in Kongo and drop him using a particular setup personally shows me that he’s improved his standup game.
I'll go along with you to a point.
I think that if the explanation of gameplan was actually true (which I have zero reason to doubt, it’s not like Mir has anything to gain by randomly making stuff up post-fight), then it shows that Mir has the ability to execute a specific gameplan with his striking.
I’m not convinced that he can adapt and react quickly in the middle of a fight if his A, B and C plans aren’t going over as well as he’d like. But he is clearly the best striker he’s ever been. His striking is no longer a glaring weakness, and may in fact be moving towards a legitimate strength.

Until further notice the Mir War Wagon is off the track, as its conductors are drinking copiously.
We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.
The sound of a thousand parlays dying...
just erupted when Kongo lost this fight.
